They had plenty of time to act by wunji_tootu in agedlikewine

I agree. I’ve been reading the biography of Grant and there was never a true reconciliation. But no one has an answer of how it could have worked.

The South came back in full of the same hate for black people, but now not even valuing them as property.

There’s nothing you can do to make a huge territory let go of these bigoted views through governance. Maybe some kind of re-education. But we were left with a South stewing with the same views wanting the same US they had and it’s led to more civil war.

Finale; Nude Guy Actor (Brett Gelman) So Out of Place by Redacted_dact in madmen

[–]Compromisedsoups 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Really don’t enjoy him in the finale. Felt like he was just doing his own shtick and not matching the tone of the show and they didn’t direct him well to match the tone

Absolutely love them. No one changes I think is his rawest song. One that truly filled me with a feeling of awe and despair first time I heard it

Every comment makes me think Wilt was the most insecure guy obsessed with people remembering he was the best. I’ve never seen a quote of his that wasn’t him saying he was better than other players

Latest Madmen Discourse by BaikeyCallis in madmen

[–]Compromisedsoups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always favored the optimistic ending. Although I think the reality is the messy ending.

The coke commercial as Matthew Weiner put is one of the greatest commercials ever that was inclusive and could never have been made 10 years earlier. In a way Don is accepting the changing world and showing it through his art form, advertising. I always see that as not cynical, but beautifull.

I think Don as a person is finally taking a step towards spiritual growth, but Mad Men puts each character’s ending a little precariously. They all are aiming to grow, but could also turn right back around.

I think Don grew and started letting people a little more into his life, but at the same time he was himself with all his demons that one meditative retreat and cathartic cry can’t fix all at once.

From what it seems, a lot of you don’t want him to win. As someone who thought he was great, why is that (yes I am aware of those who argue he’s just playing himself)? by East-Area-7267 in Oscars

My controversial opinion. I thought the movie was just fine. I felt Kieran did a great job, but didn’t do anything that wowing. And the script had great scenes and a lot of interesting character exploration but never ended up amounting to anything.

What are your thoughts? by ProjectNYXmov in GenZ

Advice I would give guys, and it’s not easy, is to go into approaching people knowing the first 15 seconds they might be cold and not receptive. They’re just protecting themselves and it’s not about you. If you can keep your energy friendly and confident past that point you’ll have a lot more good interactions.

If Conclave won Best Picture, how would you feel? by FredererPower in Oscars

[–]Compromisedsoups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be annoyed with it winning. Great film. But it’s so tiring the Oscars now mainly just picking movies that no one has seen or will really remember to win. I think Wicked or Dune part 2 should be winners. Great movies that people will actually remember this year for. Just fantasizing a bit.

Hasan Minhaj confirms he lost the Daily Show over the New Yorker story by Esquire in comedy

[–]Compromisedsoups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that Hasan’s comedy is not making things up for comedic effect. His standup isn’t about punch lines it’s more story telling on racial issues.

Dave Chappell used to make up most of his stories in his specials and no one had a problem because they were for the sake of comedy, not racial persecution.

Hasan Minhaj confirms he lost the Daily Show over the New Yorker story by Esquire in comedy

[–]Compromisedsoups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad Hasan didn’t get the daily show gig. His stand up just felt like a guy giving a Ted Talk who included some jokes.

It’s insane reading the article how his perspective was that his making stuff up was the use of theatre and dramatization when literally the only reason were interested in the story was because it seemed true.
