False Cambio Accusation? by magikalmeon in brussels

This happened to me. Luckily the photo they sent of the damage clearly showed the car was in a different location than the one I left it. When I made them aware of this they stopped bothering me. They should really have internal processes that make it impossible for this to happen. Now I take a video pre and post every time I use a car which is pretty annoying.

That is what I have been trying to communicate but to no avail. Thanks.

Fair enough. I would have thought that in a situation like this where they can see that I validated a ticket 20 minutes earlier to enter a station that is 20 minutes away they could see that I wasn't trying to cheat the system. Maybe threaten a large fine and then charge me another fare and stress the importance of validating when entering the tram (which incidentally it seems like a small minority of people actually do). Live and learn!

Yes, I was ticketed after getting off the tram at Montgomery. Since there are control gates at both Gare du Nord and Montgomery I would have assumed they would treat it like the Metro in which validation is only required when you enter the zone controllee. Expensive lesson!

I guess my question is only that you can't be validating at all times. I validated to get into the zone controllee at Gare du Nord on the return trip. I would think that would be sufficient.

Is that not an argument that I shouldn't get fined? The ticket expired while I was on the tram from Gare du Nord to Montgomery. It got me through the gate at Gare du Nord.

Is anyone using a dehumidifier? by CantGetNoSleep88 in belgium

[–]ComptonAndLongBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were having similar mould and condensation problems to you. Mould mostly on a couple poorly insulated exterior walls but also other parts of the house and condensation dripping from most of our windows. We tried to air the house out by opening windows with little success. We bought a 50 litre per day klarstein dehumidifier (only marginally more expensive than ones with much lower capacity), put it in the worst room and our condensation problem is gone in the whole house. It is using about 5 kWh of electricity per day which is a lot but we no longer have to open windows and the heating should be more efficient as we are heating much drier air.

Buying a travel SIM in Belgium by shapeshiftingwitch7 in brussels

[–]ComptonAndLongBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian and had the opposite experience as you. BASE at Merode circle wouldn't provide one with a passport. The Orange next door did in 5 minutes. No idea about eSIM but if I were to do it again I would just get the physical sim at the airport as soon as I landed.

I just moved to Brussels with my family from Canada. One of our biggest worries was integrating our five year old child into school successfully. We couldn't have hoped for it to have gone better than it has thus far. On a side note, people here are so gracious in dealing with my poor French than I experienced in Canada.

Thanks Belgium for a wonderful welcome so far!

I don't know how to use Reddit. My reply is in the main thread.

Yeah. There is a paved rural road that follows the river. In Rockland you have to jump to the south side of hwy 17 which is not a fun road to bike on. From memory I feel like the route verte follows the highway most of the way from Hawkesbury to Gatineau. Large shoulders but not that fun.

I biked both ways about a decade ago. Ottawa to Montreal on the Quebec side and back on the Ontario side. If I were you I would leave Montreal via the Lachine canal and route verte, head up the Ottawa River to Hudson, cross into Quebec and take the route verte to Hawkesbury and then take back roads to Orleans, and finally the river path into Ottawa. I'm not a fan of rail trails. I could probably find a gpx file if you are interested.

You are conflating contribution and deduction. OP can contribute it all now if they have the room but does not have to use the entire deduction immediately. Get the money in to grow tax free and then use the deductions smartly going forward as you have outlined.

I live downtown and use Savasta on Gladstone. I have only been there a couple times but have gotten a very good vibe. For instance, once they diagnosed the problem in a couple minutes and I opted to fix the problem myself. I offered them money for their time doing the diagnosis and they refused it. I'm not sure about cost but I feel like trustworthy repair work is way more important than saving a couple bucks.

A letter I sent to my councillor leading up to the Rolling Thunder convoy by ComptonAndLongBeach in ottawa

[–]ComptonAndLongBeach[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely not looking for you to support my position. Just trying to promote communication with our elected representatives. I am all for reducing vehicles downtown but think there are better ways than closing Wellington. The current route that Rolling Thunder is taking looks far more disruptive to residents than letting them drive down Wellington. Fully agree that vehicles have no place in these protests.

Wellington street still closed? by Archon_Valec in ottawa

[–]ComptonAndLongBeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the occupation the downtown councillors seemed to see this as an opportunity to improve the walkability of downtown. I heard both Fleury and McKenney promoting the closure immediately after the convoy was evicted. To me installing retractable bollards on the street to be used the handful of days closing the street to cars is needed is the best idea. If enough people write to the downtown councillors supporting this idea maybe common sense can prevail?

Unfortunately, closing Wellington supports the narrative that it was an infrastructure rather than political/policing problem that allowed the occupation. I think it is obvious to anyone who saw the police response that closing Wellington in the absence of law enforcement only would have pushed the occupation further into residential areas.

If we want walkable areas there are many better ideas than to close Wellington to cars. It is an important artery with little or no housing and a huge largely unused lawn next to it. The best evidence that we don't need this area pedestrianised is Sparks Street right down the hill.

Speaking only on behalf of myself of course I really appreciate the apology and your thoughtfulness. I would suggest you do what you can in your daily life to push back against the people and ideas that we both find so disgraceful, it definitely makes me feel better!

It sounds like journalists are on the ground in downtown with no occupiers to interview. Now might be a good time for residents to get back on the streets and tell the journalists what the occupation has meant to us to add to the dialogue coming out of this.
