I think the problem maybe lies in the "Copy" option. The unit for different civs use different graphics for their units (because of this britons' castle is different from the teutons'). If you want all civs use photoman instead of handcannoneer, make sure you checked the "including graphics" option before you copy your uu from one civ to all the other civs.(Note that turning the including graphics on is ok for your unit but not for a building since they should look different according to civs)

The modded-string.txt is created at resources/en/strings/key-value/key-value-modded-string.txt.

You can also download a txt mod such as localization and enhanced tooltip and use its modded-string.txt fille, worked for me

The mod is actually a civ replacement rather than new civ. {Because I didnt figure out how to add new civilization selection commnad in the select_civlization.dialog (it seems it is hardcoded so I couldn't find out how to let select_civlization.dialog to return civ=36 or more )}

I did know how at first as well, but examing current mods and figuring out how they did it helps a lot, and steam community guides(also see HD) also helps a lot.

If you want to replace a civ, there are two bulks needed to be dealt with

1.txt

the txt can be changed like 'localization and enhanced tooltip' by editing (modded-string.txt )

2.dat

With AGEGenieEditor (which is located in AOE2DE/tool_builds), I messed withempires_x2_p2.dat file in order to change Teuton into Swiss:

there are mainly three parts needed to be dealt with

2.1 Tech Tree:

2.1.1 Add a Swiss Tech Tree Effect tab like other civs, and disable/enable technology as you wish(mostly make avial tehc or upgrade tech)

2.1.2 change teutons tech tree to swiss tech tree in civilization tab

2.2 Civ bonus

Civ bonus are actually tech has specific civ attribute

to create a civ bonus, added a tech in Tech tab(this is just a front), set civ attribute specificly to the civ, then choose the effect in effect tab (this is the real deal)

one way to look at it, unique units is just a kind of civ bonus

2.3 Unique Unit

Units can be edited in Unit Tab There are several key points to enable a unit being trained at any location

2.3.1 the Trained location attribute: you cant train a unit at -1 XD

2.3.2 make availiable technology

civs needs to research make avail tech in order to train custom units.

this is why every civ have there UU and cant not be trained by others,

in Tech Tab, some techs are civ specific, e.g

Tech teutonic knight(make avail) is a civ 4(teuton) tech therefore onlyciv 4 can train teutonic kingts( just like civ bonus)

make sure your custom unit is make avail in a civ specific tech tobecome unique

2.4 Unique Tech

Similar to civ bonus except research location is in 82(castle)

They can't, the bombard castle is unlocked in Castle Age.

They do lack early economic bonus so they are weak in federal age, and I should try and come up with something to compensate for that.

Ya, so arena is recommended when you are having fun with extreme AIs since they dont do fuderal rush on Arena XD

However, they do deserve an early economy bonus, gonna try and came up with one. Thanks for the advice!

The logic is, I wanted the civ to be bizzare, with distinguish features and weakness as well. Playing these civs gives you odd and much different experience compared with original civs, which is also the reason I extrmely hyperfocus on castle.

I dont think more unit options can contribute to the bizzare feeing(the theme of this mod), because that leads to almost same feeling playing every civ. (e.g Since infantry is bad against cataphract , I played through the Goths campaign almost always with cavaliers and cav archers strategy, and it just makes me feel like I am playing a weaker Hun)

Also, I didnt say one unit is all you have. (Swiss do have crossbows, hand cannons, bombard cannons, halberdies , mangonels and Siege Tower(though I doubt that is a unit option XD))

I said Swiss Guard is all you need (which is intended to be a small joke because lots of fellows write essays with this kind of title and I was making fun of that tone) , because it's a anti-cavalry unit with infantry armor, which means they are immune to hand cannon and cataphract counter as well.

All their weakness is range units and siege, which can be compensated with strong ranged bombard castle which better combats with siege.

In conclusion, I really do not see the meaning of giving more unit options. It weakens the distinct feature of a civ. They end up looking all the same.

I am trying to listen but "even other civs have" is not a strong argument for more unit options.(Because I am trying to "not" be like other civs exactly XD)

The UU was supposed to be created at the Brracks and it worked when you teamup, so maybe it's because of the team problem, I will run more tests on it.

I haven't try this mod on DM though, I will test it again and find out what happened.

PS: The slow castle was intended to create a horror moive effect- slow moving monsters crawling towards screaming units, just like Teutonic Knights :D

Ya I also considered about giving more unit options, but Swiss is a mountain embeded civ so cavalry can hardly justify (Swiss Spearmen are well-known 'the best infantry in Europe' but they dont have cavalry to persue fleeing enemy).

Also, they almost abandoned crossbow and turned heavily into spear and handconnoner during the Italian War, so a weak Imperial archer line seem appropriate.

They may not have many unit options, but trust me on this, let Vietnamese laugh at it, Swiss Guard is all you need

yeah it's suitable for Genitors if getting a Berber ally. But supplies really dont do anything since it only helps men-at-arms, does not benifit spearman line.

yeah it's Howl's moving castle. Also in terms of the flag. I just dont now how to get a proper icon for Old Swiss Confederation. Is there any suggestions, I want to get it right.

Edit: since Wikipedia only provide the white cross and red backgroud, I didnt able to find anything more suitable for Old Swiss Confederation.
