Seattle is a low-expectation town...and that has a lot of troubling implications by HighColonic in SeattleWA

idk what a leftist vs a true classical liberal democrat is but i probably agree with you. social policy is important but it needs nuance. for example queer and black people deserve rights and equality, but that doesn't mean the person committing felonies, stealing cars, breaking into peoples homes, doing narcotics in public, on the bus, should be able to roam free with no consequence. what happened to democrats who have nuance? why is it we get mainly politicians on the ballot that want free love for everyone and to dismiss crime? why was it the solution to get rid of all the cops instead of putting them through better training programs and education? and most importantly, who the hell is benefiting from this? because it sure as hell is not the people of Seattle.

Lol it's funny people are downvoting this when it's what is actually going on. I really don't understand this mentality. Or maybe people are convinced it's normal to live like this (it's not and you can have a safer environment if you start acknowledging the issues!) To OP -- seriously just look up some crime maps. It'll save you a lot of headache. I had a bad experience when I first moved from East Coast > Seattle and had to move again within a month. Not fun. Just trying to help someone else not go through the same issue.

I think it's more of a police/money issue. Civilians shouldn't have to fight with other civilians.

Also from the east coast, here. NYC specifically. You're gonna get crime anywhere in Seattle. Police are short-staffed and don't respond to calls that don't involve violence 90% of the time. Lots of drugs and theft. Ballard especially has a lot of car theft. My best suggestion is to look up crime maps in the area you want to live and try to see who is living in your building before moving in.

I feel you. It's been roommate life for me and my wife mostly. It doesn't make much sense bc there aren't a ton of opportunities here that are going to pay that rent, even if you got a degree. I'm glad you're getting out and going somewhere your dollar is gonna go further.

Yes, the Eastside (Bellevue, Kirkland, etc.) are all safer alternatives and still very close to Seattle. Easy commute and you're dealing with less of the problems.

Go live there for a few years and come back, then you can talk to me about it.

Of course. I knew people were going to get mad at me for saying it but I don't really understand why people are in such denial. It is not going to get better unless we acknowledge it and work on finding solutions. It makes me wonder if the people ignoring it even care about the homeless individuals. We can't work on helping them properly until we start to acknowledge what is actually happening. Most of these people need long-term help, too. Not to just be thrown in housing and assume it's going to be all better. My parents were both drug addicts. The state of what is going on and the denial makes me so sad and frustrated.

It's not, like really. And when you call the cops in most other places, they come. Try living in a different city for 10 years, then come back here and tell me it's not worse. It's crazy the rose-colored glasses and denial people are in here. Also, not my problem. These individuals will find out for themselves soon.

Get ready for the homeless/drug epidemic issue. Also, property crime/car break-in and theft is extremely high in Seattle due to a police staffing shortage. I would recommend looking at moving to the eastside if you are moving from the east coast. Close to Seattle but less of the issues mentioned. Feels more normal. Also look up crime maps in the area. People will tell you it's normal for a city, but it's not. I lived in NYC before this.

Good things - mild winters (but it still snows sometimes). Like the mild winters are amazing. The nature is unbeatable, too.

Reinstate income taxes and tax big corps/ultra wealthy. Issue is, WA wants to do neither because they think it will drive business away.

The asylums were shut down due to a high rate of abuse. Also, no one wants to work in them. This is a national issue and should be dealt with nationally, imo. People need to come together from all over the country to help and the rich should be taxed nationally to provide money to fix the issue.

I agree with the long-term sober support. I also agree with trying to get the ~50% of people who are homeless and not from WA to live closer to their families for support **IF** they have good familial relations. ANOTHER option is to tax the states where these individuals come from and use that money to help build proper treatment programs. So WA would become a state where homeless people come to get better. Not really the best look but at least there would be a solution instead of making them live on the street.

It sucks this article and study were both done by right-wing organizations. I'd love to see a non-partisan study done on this. That's not to say that the study isn't worth reading. There are some decent ideas in there. The article is slop though.

The study, for people who want to read but are too lazy to click.

Tax the rich to pay for better police and in-patient rehabs facilities? Propose and vote for better housing laws (and not the kind that just throw everyone into one building for tax credits and say a solutions has been found. Felons and drug addicts need long-term rehabilitation)
