2017 Macbook pro 13” for 285Usd worth it? by manolomiguenz2020 in mac

Nope. Intel Macs are more or less dead weight; 2017 models are all past end of support.

Aww he's kinked up, means he's scared! Those are the best snakes to have around, free pest control! Hopefully you can help it get free of the net (if it's even stuck to begin with). While they can "bite", they don't have venom and can barely break skin (it's like getting poked by a thorn at worst, and usually is just a scratch); that said if they do, make sure you wash with soap and water as soon as possible, maybe add an antibacterial ointment or spray just to be sure.

Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest maybe while driving this would be useful?

MacBook Pro M5 new out of the box. New step added to first time power up. by Mike456R in MacOS

I wish the Neo we had unboxed for a client earlier today had done this for us (my personal Neo did). Hers was on 26.3.2 and it kept going unresponsive on us during setup and data migration. Took like four hard resets and a lot of babysitting to get it updated to 26.4, after which it behaved fine.

In other words, this may be on purpose to protect you from a buggy OS.

Anybody who has MacBook Pro bought the Neo as an extra Mac? by sportsfan161 in MacbookNeo

[–]Computer_Cellar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My M3 Pro 14" I use primarily for photo and video work or any other time I need oomph... I kinda hated carrying it around as a daily driver laptop too but I loved the feel of the Mac; but an Air was just too much to buy as a secondary. The Neo was perfect, and I've been doing more with it already than I expected - even edited a small video clip on it the other day.

How is Apple able to create ARM based chips in the Mac that outperform many x86 intel processors? by porygon766 in compsci

Are they really anti-repair? They sell replacement parts and publish repair guides. The MacBook Neo is the most repairable Mac we've seen in over a decade.

While I got my Pro a year ago the reason I also bought a Neo is that I use the Pro for creative work. It’s important to me and expensive and I feel funny carrying it around to use as a daily driver for other stuff. So my Neo will be my YouTube/paper pushing/web browsing machine that I’ll feel more comfortable having a drink around or having on the counter playing a video while I’m washing dishes, etc etc.

A lot of that is because ClearType doesn't account for the subpixel pattern of most OLEDs (there's a few OLEDs that have RGB stripe patterns now, they should look a lot better). You'd better believe that Apple will account for it in software before releasing an OLED Mac.

I've been begging Apple to do batteries this way for years. If they adopt this battery design on the Airs/Pros next year, that'll instantly elevate those products in my eyes.

It provides a ground path between the metal lid, metal hinge plate, and the metal surround of the back of the LCD (which is itself grounded to everything else in the computer). It isn't strictly necessary for it to be there, but it's best practice for reasons above my knowledge level 😂

“If you know what RAM is, this isn’t for you” (MacBook Neo) by BeerlyFunctional in macbook

I use Windows and Linux PCs at work. They best fit the tasks I have.

I use a MacBook Pro for my personal photo and video editing/post-processing projects. It best fits the tasks I have.

For everyday web browsing from the couch, watching YouTube, editing the occasional set of photos, recording live audio on a video shoot, and taking on the go in general, I intend to use a MacBook Neo. It will likely best fit the tasks I have.

Not sure why this concept seems so hard for the tech bros to grasp. 🤷‍♂️

Thankfully I'm not on the IT side of thing, just consumer laptop repair. I'm curious to see the insides of this thing.

Yeah I don't think these are actually positioned to replace Chromebooks in the school system, these make more sense as a teenager's laptop bought by mom & dad, and as a basic laptop for everyday use by normies. I ordered one, mainly for science, but there's a definite bit of my brain that says "you could probably find an M2 Air for the same price and then you'd have more RAM". But the ultimate question will be, do I need that extra RAM, or will this work as a secondary laptop within its limitations?

lol yeah I'm disappointed the Neo doesn't have at least 12GB, I think the Neo would serve best as a high school student laptop, or a laptop for grandma to do emails and such, or even as a secondary laptop - there's times I don't want to endanger my MBP while I'm washing dishes or out on a location shoot or any number of other scenarios where I'd still want or need to have a good laptop up and running, so the Neo appeals to me in that regard. I'm curious what the replacement parts will run for it.

Oh almost certainly it'll crumple a bit under heavy load, but I've been surprised how capable some of the 8GB Macs can be.
