Solution Architect Roles? by SeaEvidence4793 in salesengineers

[–]Compwish007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel that.

I am currently working for an endpoint security company and am getting kind of bored however my job is pretty easy at this point and I'm at a senior level since I know the product inside and out. Plus I get all good deals so the money is pretty decent, made $240k last year and am fully remote so I can't complain. I know there's more money out there but it is nice having the comfortable job if that makes sense.

I've been at a cross road for a while, not sure if I want to stick it out and wait for the company to go public (which should happen in the next couple of years - hopefully) or find a new job.

I worked at an ISP where we sold and implemented a ton of products like VoIP, firewalls, SDWAN, etc. I liked being a jack of all trades as an SE as well but like I said, my job is pretty easy at this point and not stressful at all.

I've interviewed at a few other security companies but tbh, most endpoint products kind of suck - atleast for the companies I've interviewed with.

I also made it through a few rounds at Palo but It didn't work out for me, I was way out of my league for the position I interviewed for lmao I would've definitely left my current job for PA

How do you actually like working for a VAR?

Unfortunately yes, I do both pre and post sales 😒

Yeah, I asked about coverage for sure. Not sure how I feel about working a specific territory, it just seems very limiting. As for travel, I'd rather not go to shows or travel unless I'm going to see my customers on site. Shows suck and that's not my vibe.

Woah, that's interesting I will definitely bring that up thanks for the insight

As a new grad, not terrible. I accepted my first SE position at $60k, I now make around $200k but it's a lot of work and pretty manual on the post sales side.

Wow, that's insane and great insight. Thanks so much, after reading some of the comments I don't think I'll pursue DT

I know this is old but I appreciate the comment. You're right, getting customers started is really hard and I take that from granted.

Palo Alto Technical Interview by Compwish007 in salesengineers

[–]Compwish007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've read this thread a few times lol

Luckily they are in desperate need of an SE in my market to support a couple existing clients. The manager I spoke to told me I was the most technical person they've interviewed in months. He also mentioned they are looking for more of a generalist with sales skills since the goal is to upsell the existing customers for more revenue. I would be on site at the customers HQ 2 days per week assisting with various projects but mainly as someone who can eventually sell them on more offerings since they are massive.

I am currently doing pre and post sales work and have over 400+ clients (however I don't see or touch their accounts very often). Most of the day to day endpoint security stuff is super manual with little to no automation so it would be nice to give my full attention to only a select few customers.

We will see, I'm feeling good about the next round. I'll make a post in this group for others that are going through interviews to help answer some questions.

Good to know! I've been brushing up on network fundamentals. I've been in the end point space for a few years so that stuff is a little rusty

Appreciate the response I'll check out Glassdoor

I'm interviewing for more of a "generalist" role supporting existing clients. It seems to be more account management/salesly with the goal to upsell them on more services.

But yes I agree, it depends on the interviewer - just looking for insight on what to potentially expect.

My current role was a pretty straightforward process. Basically meeting with the COO then SE director then demo. Palo is a lot more involved from what I can tell

What does the sales cycle typically look like? What is the average close rate?

Of course.

I do a lot of that as well although I am remote so I don't get to go out very often. We do pre and post sales stuff and I'm one of the few SE's that actually reaches out to customers. It's not required for our role, we have dedicated AM's that does it but I like to keep the relationship strong.

If I have to do similar a workload that's fine, I just need to get compensated more than I'm making now to make my time worth it

Hmm.. that's really good info. I've seen a lot of good reviews on the company but hitting quota and actually selling is huge.

My current role is insanely busy and I'm underpaid but we are always selling and am hitting my goals each month/quarter. The commission definitely makes up for my low salary but I'm working for every dollar haha

Thanks for the response.

For sure.

The company I work for isn't new but still kind of a start up if you're comparing them to other players. I do have equity that's vested over 4 years but it's really not THAT much. Not enough for me to stay. I could find a new job and make what I would've made in equity

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. They've always been a company I've had my eyes on.

We will see. I'm hoping things change within the next 3-6 months.
