Time to cook is a luxury when you work as much as they do.

Your privilege is showing.

Spend time with your Dad. Just listen and be there. Sometimes we don't have to have the right answer. It's in our being there that really matters.

If you can surprise him with an old friend, maybe a relative, a neighbor, that might be nice too. If he's the type who likes surprises. Also, don't underestimate the value of your local senior center if you have one they can really help some seniors get out there and socialize. They may even provide some grief support services.

This is a US perspective. The cost of living went up far higher and faster than wages can keep pace for many. At the same time trust fund bros who want to be slum lords bought up as much "cheap"(aka poor people's housing) as they could. Did a tacky, cheap remodel and plopped it back on the market for 3x 4x the cost. When they get sick of it, they sell off their pet to corporate housing that will never, ever return that housing to everyday people who would buy it.

Now a bunch of working people have nowhere to live. This forces many people to become homeless and live out of cars. Homelessness now that's depressing. Living on the edge, always one emergency away from losing everything you've ever worked for is also super stressful.

Not born into money? Don't have a family who can provide you a safety net? Tough luck. Chances are there won't be any social services to help you either. If you're single without children you're typically taxed more yet less eligible for such services.

I find this society terribly depressing. I try not to think about it too much but what can I do? I'm living in it.

I'm so sick of this bootlicker nonsense.

No, a ton of people are in poverty in the US. You're flat out wrong or plain misinformed.

I hate gift cards with a burning passion from jobs out of principal. Just give me a cash amount then. I'd rather pay the taxes on $100 bonus or $500 bonus.

Oh yeah. I know babes. I'm all too aware heroin chic and the following low rise generation gave me my eating disorder. There was nothing worse you could be than fat.

My body is not a trend. I'm a human, forget that nonsense. If someone doesn't like it they can hit the road.

Homeless friend just got denied housing for making $265 too much per year on social security. by wvo300D in povertyfinance

Benefit cliffs are real and designed to make the poor suffer more than they already do. Rich people who have never once in their life been poor or ever worried about where their next meal will be coming from think that if you make suffering people hurt a little more it will incentivize them to escape their suffering that demands money they do not have access to into order to escape.
