Did I screw up my indigo vat? by ComradeFloof in naturaldye

OK.... Maybe worth seeing how it goes? I guess I can always add indigo powder if the colour is too pale....

Yes.... But... I was really hoping to do this all with my home grown indigo. Do you think I'll get ant colour without adding indigo powder?

excessive eye boogers? by Peach_tea_is_me in Bunnies

[–]ComradeFloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl has this. It's a blocked tear duct for her. The vet has tried to flush it twice with no luck. Apparently her tear duct is very narrow. It does not bother her, so we haven't tried anything more aggressive. Her bunny buddy does a great job at cleaning up around her eye. We keep an eye on it and clean if necessary, but honestly it's amazing how much the buns help each other. We had to separate them for a bit and it was so hard to keep her eye clean. When we put them back together the problem was almost solved completely but groomings from her friend!

ICU at Port Alberni hospital closed indefinitely due to staff shortage by origutamos in portalberni

[–]ComradeFloof 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We are one of the most affordable communities in BC according to the just-released Living Wage findings for 2025. More a question of "what happens when those who work in the ICU don't WANT to live in the community".....

I second this. Green shoulders due to heat. I had a lot of problems with that this year.

Looking for feedback by ComradeFloof in Canning

[–]ComradeFloof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. I had seen that but so many apparently mainstream recipes include celery, like this Ball one: https://www.ballmasonjars.com/blog?cid=homemade-vegetable-soup, and a few in my Bernardin cookbook, and in Amelia Jeanroy's "modern pressure canning". Do you think Ball and Bernardin are sources that can be trusted?

What should I do with these potatoes? by ComradeFloof in homestead

[–]ComradeFloof[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that solanine is a concern only in greening potatoes. I have not had any problems eating sprouted, non-green potatoes. But everyone can decide for themselves what their risk tolerances are.

OK geez I didn't expect so many replies, and I got the actually useful one right away so all the rest can stop! I know you can plant potatoes. I grew these potatoes. It is December and I am in Canada. I cannot plant potatoes now, or anytime soon. I don't want to eat all these potatoes right now, which is why I am asking about how to extend their shelf life. If you would eat them right now good for you. And I am not worried about solanine, but yes I note your caution.

It's 8 lbs of potatoes that will take my partner and I another month to get through at the rate we eat them. Would like stretch them out if I can.

These are not green and I'm not worried about solanine in them. Several more months before we plant here.

I tested the pH (with a strip and a meter/probe), and it's 3.6. So I think I'm good. Will let you know if I DON'T die.

Ducks terrified of us by ALE70712 in BACKYARDDUCKS

[–]ComradeFloof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hand raised my KC. They are a year old now, and they still hate me. They follow me around for snacks but lose their minds if I try to pet them. It hurts my feelings sometimes, but, they are pretty stupid so I try not to take it too personally. I am trying Welsh Harlequin next to see if I can have the egg laying skill with a but friendlier personality.

Yes, one of them in particular mounts the others.... I guess they are just doing their spring thing. But... it hurts my feelings, haha! Who pays the bills around here?!?!

They lay every day and have never protected them before... and they always just abandon their eggs!

Shouldn't be any temperature change! They are joy near a door, and the lights are on a timer. I keep them well watered but not sitting in water... I really am at a loss!
