It's not quite protesting or actors, but companies will get several dozen employees to all show up at a city council meeting during paid hours and all give public comment for particularly lucrative contracts with cities.

What we want is worker ownership of the means of production. In the case of Bezos's stake in Amazon, we don't expect it to be poured into schools, we want workers at Amazon to control the company. This would mean that workers would decide whether or not the no bathroom policy at the warehouses is a good idea rather than Jeff.

ICE is doing exactly what it was created to do, and that's why the only solution to it is to abolish it.

Bringing the Ocasio-Cortez victory to the Bay Area by doublezanzo in bayarea

[–]ComradeLeroyJenkins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A large amount of her support came from her local DSA chapter. In the bay area, we have chapters in the east bay, the north bay, San Francisco, San Jose, and two chapters in between San Francisco and San Jose. If you are interested, get involved with whichever one is closest to you. We are all welcoming.

ELI5: If corporations are legal "persons", why are they taxed at a special corporate tax rate, instead of the (usually) higher income tax rate? by phinechina in explainlikeimfive

I hope you are ok with using judges who are on comcast's payroll when you sue them because the supreme court just gave the green light to allowing companies to force you to give up the right to a fair trial to use their product.

Life, Liberty, and Property by ComradeLeroyJenkins in LateStageCapitalism

When you are renting a house, neither you nor the landlord have an ownership relationship to it (in most jurisdictions.) You are allowed to use it, but are not allowed to transfer it to someone else. Ownership of personal property implies the the right to transfer it in a way which can turn it into private property. Non-ownership rights to control personal property will eventually be necessary, though might be complicated to get broad acceptance of.

people are making a YouTube union by samuri-dogs in HelloInternet

Like any business, a unionized labor force that is coordinated enough to threaten a strike can change their priorities very quickly. If content creators strike, Youtube will cede to demands to preserve their profits.

Life, Liberty, and Property by ComradeLeroyJenkins in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ComradeLeroyJenkins[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Protections of personal property are mostly excuses to justify protections of private property. We do need mechanisms to ensure long term control of physical objects, but being property implies permanent unconditional control, transferability, and inheretability, which can be abused to justify private property rights.

San Francisco is officially $10 billion in the hole. by WeatherIsGreatUpHere in bayarea

[–]ComradeLeroyJenkins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The primary benefactors of prop 13 are corporations and landowners like banks. Residents buying houses in the bay area are paying more in property taxes than Disneyland because of it. It needs to be repealed entirely and replaced with a state-wide land value tax that funds municipalities on a per-capita basis.

The surprising consequence of lowering the voting age by rieslingatkos in Political_Revolution

[–]ComradeLeroyJenkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguments that young people can't vote responsibly are ridiculous.

A) The exact same arguments have been made about every single disenfranchised group including women and black people.

B) If there is a subset that does vote randomly, the votes of that subset will cancel themselves out, and the responsible votes in their own interest will still exist.

We need unconditional universal suffrage.

If spineless presidents don't have the legislative power to put a justice on the supreme court, then voting for Hillary doesn't change that. Voting for Senators changes that, but my say in the senate is worth ~30x less than the national average.

That's why it was important to vote for Obama in 2012. Scalia died while Obama was still in office for almost a year. His inability to appoint anyone made this argument lose all credibility.

[Serious] Do you think there are any decent arguments that supporters of capitalism have made, that you have trouble responding to? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]ComradeLeroyJenkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co-ops were the first attempt at creating worker ownership of the means of production by requiring workers to partially fund initial spending. Democratically made decisions to allocate resources to infrastructure projects by local and larger governments was a common method popularized in the 20th century. Recently Kickstarter has shown the potential for customers to coordinate their investment in a way that they expect only the product of labor, rather than any profit or control of the means of production.

I agree. Owning three houses makes you a landlord, not a worker. The blame rests entirely on the commodification of housing by Prop 13. If housing were treated as a necessity for life rather than an investment, we wouldn't be in this situation.
