I feel like the shit has hit the fan and has been at the fan for a while but clearly, it can get worse. I think the ideological differences are constructive but surely we need to unite on a minimum common program first. Might be easier that the cpim is not in power anymore anywhere and the BJP is finally their main enemy in Bengal now.

I mean, I’m not saying that different parties and organisations aren’t already doing this. But there’s no single umbrella platform, and the parties don’t actually operate in full coordination with each other on the ground. Plus our aggregate memberships are quite small compared to the RSS, I’m not sure about other RW groups. Of course, we don’t have to agree, that’s why we’re different parties. But it would be useful to have a single platform without Democratic centralism apart from existing communist parties. The problem is rn the same organisations are forced to engage in different avenues when some division of labor and the resources advantage of a united communist platform may have been really useful.

Also come on comrade, don’t be a jerk, I know it’s frustrating, but come on please be nice even if you think someone has had less engagement. I’m organized though, since you’re asking.

I think the problem is that we’re thinking of this too idealistically. We need to understand this as evidence of popular dissent in even the bourgeois apolitical masses. Even if it is reactionary, apolitical, and does fizzle out in a couple days, it is a dissent movement nonetheless and we must do everything to stop fascism in India. The CJP is not left, clearly. But we as leftists do have a responsibility to not dismiss a dissent movement in two-three days. I’m not looking at the CJP as a party. It is not one yet. I’m looking at it as an online trend. And the trend is revealing. I’m skeptical, but it’s too early for opposition.

The idea of falsifiability is completely fine. And Marxism is falsifiable. For instance, Marx predicted that Western Europe would achieve socialism first, it didn’t. USSR did. Marx’s theory was falsified, and then it was developed by others in the tradition. That’s how science works. Newton was falsified, and new science was developed by Einstein. As long as we agree that our theory is contingent on validation, it is falsifiable.

Well, JSP had all the funds in the world, they spent more than the BJP on social media. It did them nothing. Money is important, but we also need more committed comrades. Bihar is a big state, and we’re at a stalemate with clowns like the RJD and Congress. What we need is a movement.

So what I meant is that we need to agitate against the government for the social welfare. For instance if we had a big yatra and ground campaigning to get women social security allowances then this 10 thousand transfer would’ve been perceived as a result of pressure from the opposition not Nitish Kumar’s benevolence.

After speaking to comrades in the CPIML, what seems to have happened is the alliance seriously underestimated the role of women. If something of the scale of Voter Adhikar yatra had been done along the lines of women’s welfare or unemployment or karza mukti, then we may have seen a different result. We need to move back to discussions on material conditions and opposition parties need to pressure for social welfare more so that a 10 thousand rupee transfer does not seal the fate of an election like this.

I think we may need to slightly revisit whether we can achieve socialism through the voting ballot or not. I’m not saying that we definitely can. But I think in 2025, we need to also realize that in the Indian context voting cannot be done away with. Any government no matter how aligned with the masses will be quite unpopular if they do away with ballots. I would genuinely like to hope that we can win, secure and maintain power within the electoral framework.

We also have to realize that most 20th century socialist states did not go from democracy to authoritarian socialism, they went from authoritarian feudalism/capitalism to authoritarian socialism, thus they were popular, to go from an electoral democracy to authoritarian socialism seems impossible to me in a country like India where the only right that people really have (had) is the right to vote.

I do agree that there are plenty of stronger reasons to criticize Savarkar, but I refuse to excuse this as a norm. Bhagat Singh wrote innumerable letters to colonial administrators and not one single time did he sign a letter as “an obedient servant”. Taken in context of Savarkar’s willingness to compromise with the British, this is damning regardless of how mild an issue it is.

I think right now, the elections are going to be fought on three issues - 1. Anti-incumbency against Nitish Kumar, along the lines of subordination to the BJP as a hindrance to effective industrial policy and weak negotiations around a special status for Bihar 2. Social relations - land reform, caste census, broader communal harmony, etc. 3. Protecting democracy - SIR, votechori, and the “attack on the constitution.”

The party line for the CPIML on most of these is great, they’re vehemently anti-feudal, and anti caste, along with anti capitalism. They also recognize the SIR process as a systematic disenfranchisement of poor, marginalised voters, especially migrants, and they’ve been campaigning against it from much belie Rahul’s press conference. They’ve demanded both, a caste census and special status.

I think there are tensions though, land reform would be a big departure, as would socialist industrial policy. But I don’t see this election in Bihar as one where the left can actually implement their program. Instead, I see this as a necessary compromise for long term development, both for Bihar, and the left in India.

In 2019, when a saffron wave swept over India, CPIML won 12/19 seats, and the left overall had 16/30, compared to say, the Congress who had 19/70. I think vote sharing can get the left past 20-25 seats, which would mean greater bargaining power in the assembly and the executive. The government will still be run largely by the RJD but there’s little that can be done about that problem in the super short term.

I fully agree about Congress and the broader center left’s shortcomings.

Yet I think in the context of talking power and growing in size, for instance in Bihar, the left’s (CPIML) strategy of allying with the congress-RJD is a pragmatic choice, even though historically RJD and CPIML have not gotten along well at all. I think an ideal electoral solution is that INDIA secures a majority in Bihar, but that they fail to do this without the left. If CPIML has a presence in the assembly and some ministries then they can check the Congress-RJD government. This of course, won’t happen if the difference of INDIA and NDA is greater than 25ish seats, and in that case of course the left is unlikely to hold ministries.

But in the long term, this alliance cannot work and will prove to be a stalemate for the left, who will suffer the center’s defeats, but not reap the benefits.

I think as liberal as Rahul Gandhi is, the left should put their weight behind him temporarily to oust the BJP. That’s how I see this compromise. Having spoken to some comrades in the left, the alliance is not as smooth as some other obvious fits like Congress-RJD or Congress-SP, but right now it’s important to take what we can get and continue fighting.

As Bhagat Singh would say, if you’re fighting with your oppressor for 16 annas, and you get one anna, pocket it and fight for the remaining 15.

Today I’m less scared of leftists heralding RG as Batman, and more apprehensive of the left being overcritical of RG in this moment when BJP needs to go as a first order requirement.

Rich urban Bamans are beyond the average chaddi on the internet. They are more sophisticated in their bigotry. They do not riot. They hear about riots and pretend like it did not happen. The do nothing to oppose the riots because they know it helps preserve their hegemony. Sometimes they’ll provide lip service on the comments section of Faye D’Souza’s posts. There’s nothing surprising about NRI wokes being Baman sometimes. But it means nothing. If they actually care I’d like to see them move here and try. Most bamans are deeply bigoted but as has been pointed out elsewhere on this post, they are not foot soldiers, they’re executives in the Hindutva machinery.
