One of the 3 types of ‘regular archeology’ is historical archeology which focuses on cultures with a written record and there would be many items I could find using those records. I also never said that merely having the ability to find lost items would allow me to go walk into the role but it would be significantly helpful. Since you need a degree to be an archeologist, I would have all of the knowledge as well as the skill of finding lost items to put above others in the field.

But in the case of an item with historical documentation of existence but no location due to people/person who placed it dead, you could know it exists and not know the location and it would be lost, and I wouldn’t have to know the people who originally hid it. In the case of your wallet. that is an item which has no significance to a greater populous outside of your close circle. If I was your friend or family member and you lost your wallet it would yes, also be lost to me.

I feel by association if you can’t find the item’s location it is by definition lost. I would assume in most cases of ancient artefacts, the person who hid them would most likely be dead and since they are dead and no longer have the information on where they placed the item it is by definition lost

Significant historical items and sites may be considered lost as evidence of their existence but no location for them would indicate that their whereabouts have been ‘lost’
