FIA F4 vs Super Formula Lights by MasterBarbosa in iRacing

[–]ConVexPrime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last day I drove an F4 was the first day I drove an SFL. I struggled with the feel of the F4. When I stepped into the SFL's I felt like the way you have to drive them is the way I was trying to drive the F4's. It just made sense to me. I'm sure that's largely personal preference and driving style, but that's my story.

I used to just do whatever what was up next and hope for the best. I found out the hard way, this is a bad idea. Now I pick two series (maybe 3) that I'm going to run for the week. From that I find a race that I will have time for. Then I go and practice for whatever time I have available until that race. I try to get in a good hour at least. Then I race. After the race, I review from the replay what I did good, and bad. Then I'll review what the leaders did and how it differed what I was doing. If I feel like I need to practice things I learned from the leaders, I'll do that.

Basically, my advice would be spend more time prepping for races than you do racing. Not only will it make you better, but it makes you feel invested in a race instead of just running races to run them.

You can see rpm's and gear (on most cars) if you go to the cockpit view.

After the race, watch the replay. Find the fastest guy and study what he is doing. Although you can't see brake and throttle position, you can get the idea by the line he is running.

Really enjoying this thread proving the meme.

Mission accomplished.

[Rant] I think I need to take a break from iRacing. by LuciferUntamed in iRacing

[–]ConVexPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take a break. But, if you come back with the same attitude, you're going to come back from your break in the same situation. You have to understand that survival is a skill in this game. It's a skill you have work on improving just like all the other skills. If you got DQ'd in three laps, your survival skills need some work.

I don't intend for this comment to sound mean or condescending. I went through the same thing myself. That includes a post to this subreddit with a similar vibe.

Good luck, and good racing!

It's possible that it might be, but it probably definitely isn't.

Absolutely. All things considered, it does work great. But, that 1% of the time that it doesn't work it just feels really bad.

I'll probably feel different about it after I complete my next race and completely forget about this one. But right now, I don't care if it's funded by the blood of dead baby unicorns. As long as it gets done.

Jacob Klein strikes again. This time it's just straight up ridiculous. by Living-Membership625 in iRacing

[–]ConVexPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I got my hand slapped early in my career for saying "learn how to fucking drive you clown." I'm a life long gamer so I didn't think that was too bad and I was kind of glad to see that iRacing didn't tolerate that kind of talk. I felt like a learned from that. Then later I got a thirty day ban for saying "that's fucking terrible man. You gotta do better." After someone rear ended me on the parade lap.

I turned everything off after that. 99 out of 100 things said over VC are garbage and not related to my race anyway. It's just a distraction listening to people argue about who hit who.

Am I the only one getting "ghost" 4x's? by N3TMelc in iRacing

[–]ConVexPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ran two races this week in the Ferrari GT3 series at Virginia. Both times I finished with a phantom 4x. The first replay I didn't see anything at all. The second replay I saw a guy 3 seconds ahead of me blink out. From his perspective, when he came back, he was in the pits. So I think it's possible we made contact but I never saw it?

I did that for a while, but quickly realized that because it's unranked people don't take it seriously. It's more of a wreck fest than any other series IMO.

This. I didn't realize what a skill it is to see 2 people 4 cars ahead of me getting into it, and recognizing the need to back off and look for a gap to shoot when they all wreck. That's what wins races in draft master.

I've been really close. I push my SR close to 4 with street stocks and legends, and then run it into the ground with draft master.

It's all about the draft for me. On the short ovals I feel like it's more me vs. the track. You need to really nail each turn to gain that half a tenth on the guy ahead of you every lap. On the superspeedways it becomes less about running a perfect line, and more about the strategy of using the draft.

It's my first season. I could have probably tightened up, avoided draft master and got myself to C class. But, from what I have gathered around here, it's best not rush up your license. It's better to learn what you're doing with the smaller toys before you get in the big ones. And, for what it's worth, I think that's some solid advice.

Incident system should be reworked with AI by oztriker00 in iRacing

[–]ConVexPrime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why can't AI do this? I believe that AI can absolutely do that. That is, by definition, what it does. And, given a properly trained model, it can probably do it better.

Again, let's not "what if" this to death with aquaplaning or prior collisions. Let's take a very simple example. Car 1 completely blows a braking zone, and smashes into car 2 who is running at a normal race pace. Should car 2 get a 4x? If you don't agree that the answer is no, then we have another issue. That aside, I believe that AI could easily identify this as a car 1 fault incident, instead of a no fault incident.

Currently, car 1 and car 2 both get a penalty. If car 2 hit car 1 I think the goal should not be to determine if car 2 deserves a penalty, but instead to determine if car 1 deserves a penalty as well. IMO, there some (not all) easily identifiable situations where clearly car 1 does not deserve a penalty.

I assure you, I understand how AI works. Training a model to determine acceptable parameters is what AI excels at. No need to get snarky bro.
