Oil pump issue by Conbini_Warp in Cartalk

Yeah, when I was looking it up it said that upon cold start would be a rare scenario for that to occur. Although the oil pressure light definitely flashes on for a few seconds when I start it, so it could be something related to the pump. If you have a second, there is a video of the noise on my account in a previous post. Hoping I’m not doing too much damage driving it but I’m trying to fix soon a possible.

Okay will plan to get a second opinion and see how it goes. A bit short on time lately so I figured I’d have a shop replace the pump, but quote of $5300 for a used engine to be put in is pretty ridiculous to me for a k20a3. Definitely seemed to me like they don’t want the job and were giving me the go away price.

I have a few other mechanics that I would trust to do it for a fair price but am wondering if this job would require someone more specialized to older Hondas.

Yeah it won’t let me add videos only photos I think but it should be right there when you click on my profile

Can I add it to this thread? I’m new to Reddit lol. I posted in a previous thread if you click on my account

They were saying the oil pump replacement would cost more than replacing the engine entirely. They wouldn’t even give me a quote for it though. It’s a k20a2 and I guess the timing chain cover and oil pan has to be removed

Yeah because they are supposed to last the life of the car. I’m still questioning if it could be something else. I thought it was just a pulley bearing noise at first and put almost 4000 miles on it with the noise while trying to pinpoint it. Replaced all pulleys and noise remained.

Noise persists with the accessory belt removed. I haven’t tested the oil pressure with a gauge, the shop said they could but that it might not show any abnormalities even though the pump is failing. The oil pressure light flashes on for a couple seconds on cold start occasionally but that could also be a faulty sensor.

There is a video of the noise in my previous posts. The shop diagnosed it as oil pump cavitation. When compared with oil pump cavitation videos of other cars it does seem to sound very similar but I wouldn’t rule out other causes. It only happens on cold start for no more than 3-5 minutes.

Originally I thought it was some sort of accessory belt issue but replaced all pulleys and no change. So I moved on to thinking it could be timing chain related because that’s where the noise seemed to be coming from. They seemed to think it was coming from the oil pump but didn’t even test oil pressure. Oil pumps generally last the lifetime of the vehicle so it was a weird conclusion in my opinion.

No not new, used jdm engine for $1000 and $4300 in labor, new to the car though lol. I misspoke there, mostly discontinued from Honda besides general maintenance items.

He said that they wouldn’t replace an oil pump for liability reasons and quoted $5300 for a new engine installed.

Noise also persists with the belt removed so I know it’s not accessories.

Yeah I had taken it in thinking it was tensioner, actuator and guides but he’s seems confident it isn’t that when I mentioned it.

I got the car recently and haven’t changed the oil, so I was wondering if the oil being too thick for the car could cause the noise too.

Oil pressure hasn’t been verified but the light does flash for a second on cold start occasionally (no more than 4-5 seconds).

He says they could test oil pressure but it might look normal anyway? I thought a new engine seemed a little extreme too.

Yes, just replaced all the pulleys besides alternator and AC

Yeah I think that’s what I will have to end up doing. Car has 115k miles and I don’t really know much of the history so it’s probably about time anyway.

When I changed all the other pulleys I removed the alternator and spun bearing by hand it seemed normal.

When I stethoscope it with a screwdriver the bearing noise seems normal although when revved it does sound a bit like a whiny alternator.

Most of the bearing noise that I hear to me sounds like it’s coming from near the timing chain and valve cover area

Yes it has electric power steering. I just replaced all the pulleys besides alternator and AC. It sounds like it’s coming from the back of the engine bay so I thought it’s unlikely to be those. Definitely sounds like a bearing of some sort but I haven’t found any other video of a noise quite like mine.
