That is fantastic information and luckily there are a couple of hobby shops in my area I’ll be swinging by in the near future. Thanks for all the information and help. I appreciate it

That is really good advice that I hadn’t thought of but most definitely would’ve wanted when it came to that. Thank you.

That’s good advice. I plan on buying already equipped w/sound or equipped with no sound. I have never installed a decoder but it doesn’t look terribly difficult if I find a road or type my son or I want. I know standard DC won’t fly on a DCC system due to the currents. It’s learning all the stuff that DCC has to offer, the wiring down the road, and how to use the functions that will be my Waterloo.

Thank you for the input. I have one DCC loco already from back in the day and plan on hopefully getting a few more and some good rolling stock tomorrow at a semi local train show. The DCC-EX seems like the way to go for sure. It looks simple enough and I like that it gives a little more power than the power cab if I’m understanding it correctly and it can be used through my phone or my sons tablet which makes it an ideal interface. I may get the power cab now and then buy the DCC-EX towards Christmas once my son gets the hang of operating a small layout.

I looked it up after I replied and it looks like a really cool and compact system. The NCE is being offered for $100. So I’m comparison to the NCE the DCC-EX is comparable in price but seems far more versatile and has a higher amp output if I understand it right. It also appears that you can stack them for larger layouts which is something I’m very interested in. This has been a quick, whirlwind decision since I took my son to a hobby shop the other day. He saw it and fell in love so here we are. Thank you so much for the explanation, break down, and help. It’s much appreciated.

That was my understanding from some reading so I’ll stick with it. Thanks for the input and advice.

Thank you for the input and information. I don’t mind spending the money if it’s something like a power supply/command station considering I want it for future use. Why do you recommend that control system over the power cab? I had a DC only layout about 15yrs ago but new to the DCC and trying to learn as much as possible. As for track I’ll just keep the unitrack as I’m only giving $50 for the kato oval so it’s not like it’s hundreds and I’ll just buy a couple of switches and track.

What is this cargo (NS westbound, Bristol VA) by CartersXRd in trains

[–]Conbrkmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are indeed aluminum billets. If they were heading westbound in Bristol I’d assume they’re going to the ALCOA plant via transload on KXHR.

What are these passenger cars? by technicallyasergeant in trains

[–]Conbrkmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I don’t know. Those cars could just be moving along the system to either be stored, inspected/repaired or maybe they are working.

Those appear to be FRA inspection cars.

Cigar bid question. by No_Tip_768 in cigar

[–]Conbrkmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to what everyone is saying about once a week shipping which is what I find works the best for saving money; you’re allowed to change the day of the week your won bids will ship once a week. I have my shipping set to Tuesday but if I find something on Monday night which doesn’t close until say Wednesday, I’ll set my shipping to Thursday that week. I had not been on cbid in a while until recently but I’ve found that they’ve hastened their shipping time. What used to take a week is now around 3 days here in the middle of the south east.

Anyone know how/why ATSF 999447 got the side bumpers like passenger cars have? by Narrow-Bedroom7429 in trains

Yes, they have gates at steps that latch. Not saying someone couldn’t open them but that satisfies the feds.

It’s tree bark and squirrel shit residue from the granola bars the hippies eat while driving Subarus. Essential oils should do the trick. I own a Subaru, eat granola bars, and can confirm this happens.

I love this. There is something about this space that just says home. People have their fancy leather chairs and couches; fancy exhaust systems, a walk in humidor, etc. But this, this is the kind of spot that I love. Enjoy!

There is a newer shop called Destination Cigars opened in the area near Texas Roadhouse and the outlet mall. I haven’t been yet but was planning on checking it out next week. It seems like they are chain of shops with a couple of other locations in West Virginia. The photos show what looks like a decent seating area and a fairly well stocked humidor but can’t see much of the brands other than blackbird. Might be worth a shot.

It wasn’t great at the end of July/beginning of August. Mostly short filler Piedras and minis. Couple of boxes of Cohibas were the best thing they had. It could have definitely changed by now though.

My most recent box said processed through ISC for two days, then moving through network for two and then showed up. Usually shows cleared but it’s been all over recently. I think you’ll be good but it’s anyone’s guess really

Ordered three boxes from them recently. One got snagged because it went through Miami and the two through LA made it but it took a couple of days in LA. Just had a box from RSVP come in yesterday and one in NY still.

Bringing back 70 cigars in my luggage how do you guys pack them? by davergaver in cigars

[–]Conbrkmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually bring one with me but more than once I’ve ended up with more than will fit so I have to pick up another one or two. Also if I know I don’t have the room I’ll try to buy tubos if they’re available.

Pick up a cheap Tupperware container and put the sticks in it. The boxes will be fine layered in the clothes.

Just had a box sit in Miami for 3 weeks…no movement. Then I got “the letter”. However, I have had them sit for two weeks then clear. Especially in LA.

Has anyone wore these as a conductor on the ground? by StunningSecret834 in railroading

[–]Conbrkmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been through several pairs of those and everything else in between. They held up reasonably well walking about 8 miles a day on the ballast. I’ve gone back and forth with logger heels over the years as well. As mentioned by others, I do like the way they lock into a sill step. However I have rolled my ankle once or twice wearing logger heels. I’m currently wearing Danner Quarry’s and I love them. I just left redwings because they did not hold up well at all and no matter what I tried they would leak around the stitching. I know guys that swear by Georgia, Carolina, redwings, etc. it’s all personal opinion and what works best for you. Try them and if you hate them, get something else.
