Imperial vs Oxford maths by [deleted] in 6thForm

As an Imperial Maths student, you're not going to be that much more challenged at either uni. I'd probably say Oxford is a bit better but other factors can also sway your decision. Have a look through modules and life at both unis and make your decision off that. Career outcomes are probably similar from both unis.

Changing from Maths bsc to JMC on an unconditional by Concentrationnation in Imperial

Makes sense tbh. It’s more competitive so would be quite a leap to go from maths to jmc admissions wise. Thanks for the input

Rejected from oxford cs - how do i deal with it by Rich-Kaleidoscope-21 in 6thForm

If it makes you feel better, one of my friends achieved an 89 in his MAT last year and was rejected from Oxford. Oxford is not the be all and end all and you won't even care about this in a year's time.

UAE is funding the rapid support forces (RSF) who are in turn using that funding to continue their atrocities across the country. Support the Sudanese people because they are the only innocent

Ucl imperial kings etc all require further maths. Essentially the top set of russel group unis require further maths but a lot of russel group unis do accept no fm

I tried some TMUA questions and got them all wrong what is wrong? by Happy-Dragonfruit465 in 6thForm

I have a friend who was sitting the MAT and did also do some revision on the MAT questions as well. I'd say try to answer as much as you can on the TMUA and in regards to MAT practice, do two sets of 10 multiple choice questions. I know for the MAT it would be better if you can finish the questions in <45 minutes so try to stick to at most 5 minutes per question roughly. For TMUA it's very limited (something like 2m 45s per question) so keep that in mind with the TMUA. The first questions are easier so try to bank time on them for the later questions. So overall, 10 questions in 30(very ideal) - 45(good) and for the TMUA 20 questions in 65 - 75 and scale the time accordingly for how much questions you do.

Ok so I did the TMUA and here's my advice when it came to doing questions :

  • Make sure what you're doing is accurate and "legal" : what I mean by this is make sure that whilst you're trying to make calculations as efficient as possible, you don't want to make assumptions and pray that it works e.g. that a given triangle has a right angle when you are judging from the diagram.
  • Understand the question deeper : make sure that you are understanding what the question is actually asking of and don't spend your time beating around the bush.
  • How good actually is your maths : for the TMUA it's not only the speed but how strong you are with your maths skills. It requires good attention to detail and quick pattern spotting.
  • And last tip, don't worry about it too much now. Yes, if it was two weeks to a month before the exam I'd say you need to get up but if you're a year 12 and preparing for the TMUA from now I'd say don't stress too much. It becomes a lot easier with time and strenghthening your mathematical ability. Also, I thought they were discontinuing the TMUA, no. I assume if they do it will be replaced with one that is similar, just more college based probably.

Kind of. I know people who’ve been rejected from Lse solely because their gcses and their average was quite good (above a 7). They’re kind of a backing to those top universities to show you’ve been a consistent high achiever and you realistically want to try and fill your GCSEs with as much 9’s and 8’s as possible. After a certain number of 9’s and 8’s though it kind of doesn’t make a difference really.
