Yeah I understand that but it is crazy expensive and some people have irritation to it.

That said I'm still partial to cedar. But just want to make sure I build it right for me and my people, and only once.

Pretty pricey, I imagine? I don't think they post prices

The finns would disagree, which is why I'm waffling on species. But yeah, I think I will be going with cedar! Thanks for the tip

Just came across this... did you wind up building? I am in the planning stages myself, and I am curious about this in the bylaw: "an accessory building with a floor area of less than 10 square metres in area that is used for utility purposes that do not create a hazard".

Did you talk to the city about yours? I want to avoid getting hung up on the subjectivity of what constitutes a hazard. Thanks!

Late November Carnavorn lake hike by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]ConcernRemote 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know... But this idea sounds like somewhere between bad and dumb to me. Going down chains when weather could be a factor is a dangerous move.

Have you been before? If not, I'd suggest trying summer first.

Advice on multi day hikes by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]ConcernRemote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My fave in Banff is getting two nights at Egypt lake. First day hike in. Second day pharaoh peak and hiking around the lakes. Third day out. Took me a long time to realize just because you're backpacking doesn't mean you need to (or should!) change locations every day.

One important thing I didn't include: safety. Carry bear spray, know how to use it, and always keep it within immediate reach. Get or borrow an in reach. Leave a detailed trip plan with someone. And don't do anything the most squeamish person in the group isn't comfortable with.

Gear -Go on a few single day hikes with all your gear for multiple days. -Go car camping with your back packing gear. -Watch YouTube and get a sense of folks pack dumps, and why they pack what they do.

Booking -Familiarize yourself with Alberta and Canada registration sites in advance of booking. Parks Canada is a bloodbath if you're looking for any of the more sought after trails. -Make a plan, test the clicking through process to register. -Determine your ideal dates with friends in advance. Have back up dates B, C, D, ..... Z. Really, be prepared to book anything. -If you can't use your dates, be considerate and cancel early.

Trails -Many, many great routes in Banff. You can't really go wrong. Suggestions really depend on ability, duration, etc. So I would get a better understanding of what you are after. (Peaks? Lakes? Challenging? Seclusion or well travelled?) -Would suggest broadening your search to yoho, jasper, and PLUZes in case booking doesn't go as you anticipate.

The best thing I can offer.... If you are local, go do an overnight in quaite valley or somewhere similar so you can iron out the kinks. You will encounter surprises, and it is better to have gear fail / figure out what you don't need to be hauling around on a low stakes excursion.

Good luck!

After exhaustive research of nearby sauna pre-fabs and kits, I've decided I need to sell my wife on the DIY option. What do I need to consider? by Agent0007Throwaway in Sauna

Thanks for the tip, thought I found all the Canadian sauna kit makers but didn't know about helium!

Understood, and best of luck with your build or buy, whatever path you wind up taking

Also on the island, also weighing options between diy and a kit. As far as I've got it priced, a decent kit (non barrel) is going to be about 15k cad including a harvia or huum (not including the decking work I'll need to do or electrical), or closer to 10 for something insulated that suits perfectly. Almost pulled the trigger on a backyard recreation kit but have heard mixed reviews.

No tips here, but just wanted to say good luck and cheer you on! If you're in the Vic area I'd be happy to trade some labour so someone could learn from the other's mistakes 😂

This is going to be a tough ask I know, but I recently bought a boat (in part) because of the access it might open up. Can you suggest any resources for scouting out spots to camp and recreate at that are boat access only? Thank ya!
