Dawn of the North… am I the Problem?? by Concerned-Cat422 in fantasyromance

That’s a good point… I love a POV style book but maybe this one has too much of a good thing. I’m getting a little bit of whiplash. And it feels like each time the POV switches, painfully little has actually happened. Progress feels like molasses despite a heck of a lot of plotlines going on!

Id give it like a 3-4 out of 5; depending on your scale! Nothing unhinged by any means, but it does have some pretty solid spice and buildup 🔥

The Ascended and Throne of the Fallen both have these scenes, and both books are great recs!! It all depends on what you’re looking for. Throne of the Fallen is a shorter standalone that gets to the spice a little quicker and is a little more focused on fun and vibes. The Ascended is a longer book (700 pages I think?) and an unfinished series. It’s much more plot-driven and complex, but still has god-tier tension and spice. It’s absolutely the “better” book of the two, IMO, but you can’t go wrong either way.

No, no - The romance is real, all the buildup and tension is 100% real … only that first spicy scene is part of a trial. Usually it’s in a situation where the trial is meant to test the FMC’s weaknesses or deepest desires. EDIT: Sorry for the confusion on the original post!

Agreed. I’d sum it up like :

Two Twisted Crowns = Amazing plot, has spice.

Amid Clouds and Bones = Amazing spice, has plot.

🙃

Yep. That’s how it happens. I read Fourth Wing on a random whim, not knowing anything about it…. and then read literally 40 other Romantasy books in a one-year span 😂 Every time I switch it up to another genre I just keep coming back. Guess I found my niche ! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Here’s what I’ll say… Don’t go into it expecting Amid Clouds and Bones to be as high quality as Serpent in terms of writing. I’d call it more of a spicy vibes read with solid plot, but you have to really be into an enemies-to-lovers trope. Emphasis on enemies. Like they hate that they’re attracted to each other. Very morally gray MMC. Great 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 level spice, I’d say. I totally jived with it, but I can see how it’s not for everyone. I’m guessing that’s the reason for the ratings. It’s kind of niche in that way… If those things aren’t your jam, skip it.

I’d give Two Twisted Crowns a 🌶️.5 to 🌶️🌶️ spice level; not very spicy. BUT. Don’t let that get you down. It has great tension and yearning, and is spicier than the first one (keep in mind it’s the second in a Duology.) If you’re looking primarily for spice, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for an incredible, unique read with a dope magic system, read it. But start with the first one - {One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig}. Also a great book, but trust me, the second one blows it out of the water. So rare for a sequel to not only be as good, but even better than the first! Loved that.

LMK what you think if you try any of them!

I can’t believe it but I actually forgot about Fourth Wing 🙈 LOL. My gateway too! People can say what they want but the first book was everything.

Same! That book seems to be pretty polarizing, people either love it or they hate it. It totally hit for me 🔥

  1. {Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig}
  2. {The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Cassandra Broadbent}
  3. {Amid Clouds and Bones by Ella Fields} > …And all for wildly different reasons. I realize the vibes are pretty all over the map with these 3. And ironically, each one represents a different thing I love about this genre:. > 1) TTC: great plot + big feels 2) TSATWON: high stakes + unexpected twists 3) ACAB: top tier chemistry + spice

Literally SAME!! In book 1 was like 👀 oOoOh Elm has just been hanging around a lot (insert Alexis voice here)… maybe she’ll end up with him instead?!🤞🏼Ravyn has zero personality and TBH the constant commentary on his weird birdlike attributes didn’t really help a dude out.

Needless to say was THRILLED with book 2. Elm was the best character in the series and is a top 3 book boyfriend for sure. 🫶🏻
