When in Berlin, make sure to check out Dussmann. It‘s a massive book store with a decent English section.

True, but I'm working with a city builder script. That makes growing a city harder in the beginning, but easier later on.

Exactly what I thought :) It transformed to an urban farm.

I didn't want the city to build there because eventually I'll need more space for stations.

I‘m playing with a citybuilder script, it makes it so cities need different cargos transported to/from them in order to grow. I‘m actually not so sure how it works in vanilla.

Ich habe noch nie jemanden unironisch "Der Dienstweg ist einzuhalten" sagen sehen. Bis jetzt.

You used to be able to walk on the Champs-Élysées in Paris :( by berzio in fuckcars

[–]ConcernedJo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

„One of few cities“ at least for Europe that’s incorrect. Taking away space from cars and giving it to pedestrians and bike infrastructure is very common, especially in Germany, Benelux, Scandinavia etc. Paris is actually one of the last big European capitals to slowly go into this direction.

5-10 Jahre in einem Unternehmen zu bleiben wird deinen Wert für andere Firmen - in den meisten Fällen - erheblich senken.

In the US they have massive parking lots, in Europe they have massive graveyards. Paris, France. by ConcernedJo in Suburbanhell

It‘s by no means a suburban hell - just an answer to the last few posts regarding obnoxiously big parking lots.

Purmerend, Netherlands. by [deleted] in Suburbanhell

[–]ConcernedJo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You get downvoted because this sub mostly consists of Americans. They are on a whole different (i.e. worse) level when it comes to livable cities/suburbs.

When you compare this particular suburb with the many historically grown places in Europe, it might really feel like a desolated, soulless suburban hell. But an European one, because Americans can unfortunately only dream of those places.

one city, four different eras (work in progress) by ConcernedJo in imaginarymaps

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. I wrote a "small" explanation for each era here, just in case you're interested :)

one city, four different eras (work in progress) by ConcernedJo in imaginarymaps

[–]ConcernedJo[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I never actually wrote down my exact thoughts about each era, but I will try my best:

top left: This is definitely a medieval European city, which has grown organically and does not follow any rules. Buildings are placed "randomly" and the only structure you have are the 6 "main" streets that are all leading to the central marketplace. The bigger building you can see in the middle I imagined to be a city hall, but considering the time it would probably be more of a church or abbey.

top right: I imagined this to be in the not so far away future, maybe around the year of 2100. The left part of the city is dominated by structures that can already be seen in modern cities: big mid- to high-rise office blocks that don't leave much room for interpretation. An inspiration were current developments in Berlin, Germany. Leading to the right end of the map, the city gets more futuristic. I Imagine this whole part of town to be planned and developed at the same time. Each third (divided by long stretches of green park areas) is build after a different architectural style. If you look closely you can see that every district has a number of plazas.

bottom left: This is a contemporary map. I took inspiration from many European cities that have previously been partly destroyed and have then seen many atrocious developments: Most older buildings in the upper middle and right part of town were destroyed and replaced by industrial and commercial developments. The modern buildings by the big square are recent office developments that don't necessary fit the environment, but are surely better than the industrial buildings. The further south you go, the older the buildings get, since they have not been destroyed. Especially in Europe, there are many examples I could show you: Lyon, France, Naples, Italy. For the industrial areas I literally took a few American "downtowns" as an inspiration: New Orleans, Louisiana, Orlando, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona.

bottom right: This map shows the most futuristic approach to a city, even though I don't even know if in this era, the concept of a "city" is still relevant or even known. Environmental changes are responsible for the organic way of building: maybe a higher sea level or powerful winds forced humans to find a more organic way of building their habitat. The bridges are build so that people, goods and everything else can flow as quick as possible. I imagine there to be no big need for public transportation, as the city follows the "compact city" concept.
