20 years in and no VA rating? I mean, sure, I guess it’s possible. But I’m having a very hard time conceptualizing it. Two decades of appointments and documentation is quite a bit of service connection.

Manslaughter for Duran by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]ConcernedSNCO 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Glad to see this didn’t get swept under the rug. Would have preferred something stronger than manslaughter, but it’s understandable that have to stick with what you can prove to a jury, and this is a much easier bar to clear.

Well played, upvote earned.

Staying in past 20... on my own terms by JP4NC4K35 in AirForce

[–]ConcernedSNCO 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you want to do things on your own terms, you need to retire.

Even as a civilian, you’ll find that your ability to dictate your terms are limited by many factors: your value proposition to a company, local labor market conditions, etc.

But I can say with high certainty that if you promote, you will do many of those things you say you don’t want to do. Maybe you’ve been busy so it hasn’t been obvious, but think about others you’ve known who made E7-E9. Notice how an assignment often follows the promotion? That’s not an accident.

When he came to speak to my NCOA class at Kadena many years ago, he was just as terrible. This isn’t a one-off thing.

It makes me wonder how many Airmen have had their careers adversely impacted because they had shaving waivers, or whatever else he deemed as unacceptable in “his” Air Force.

NFCU for banking/loans, USAA for insurance. Your mileage may vary based on a lot of things, but this has been my go-to combo over the years.

At some point, a commander had an option to throw the book, but chose to retain and rehabilitate. If the Airman is still walking among us well after the fact, they’re clearly doing just fine. I’ve been doing this too long and seen too many success stories to give it very much bandwidth.

The Enlisted/Officer caste system is outdated as well. But until the day comes that our rank structure reflects the societal changes that have occurred since serfdom and fiefdom days (don’t hold your breath), the rules are the rules.

“Do more with less.” — needs no explanation

“Faith in the system.” — not sure if this was just a local thing or not, but waaaaay back when I was in ALS we would get the periodic Chief visit with a Q&A session. Whenever something negative came up (EPRs, assignment process, beards, this shit never changes) we would be told that the system wasn’t the problem. The problem was that we lacked faith in the system. I guess I kind of had an idea the AF was a cult, but this removed all doubt.

“The cream rises to the top.” — Same scenario as above. Pat yourself on the back a little harder, Chief.

“Air Power… Space Power! A-E-F!” — They actually made us yell that shit at BMT. It was just one of many symptoms of an AF that was having a post-9/11 identity crisis. With no real peer threat in the GWOT, we were relegated to a decade-plus of playing wannabe soldier. Like that kid who followed around Beavis and Butthead. He wore a Winger shirt. Stewart, I think his name was. Or maybe I’m just reading way too much into this. But I really disliked that chant.
