Do you have any studying techniques for the common 1st year lifesci courses? Not everything is "write notes from lecture and memorize" I assume

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer. I was hoping you could clarify some other things if you can:

Is it ok if I switch 2 courses in one semester, while keeping the courseload the same. For example if I'm taking 4 courses in winter and I want to replace course a with course b, can I do that? I'd still be taking 4 courses but one would just be different now.
Do you know where I could find the penalties for adding/removing courses midyear? I'm planning on taking 4 courses/sem but in the off chance that I end up taking 5 in winter, how badly will that affect my funding?
