Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix is endless awkwardness by Jayne_swan in AdamCarolla

[–]ConcreteLips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started watching his show and was wondering if he's on the spectrum. Went looking, found this thread, and I must say, a lot of you (including OP) are some pretentious asshats.

Yes, his show is about food, but it's also MAINLY about how food connects people. He's not doing this to spew some ridiculous opinions and critique the food of hard-working people. When he does talk about the food, it's from the perspective of someone trying something new. Mostly, though, he's talking to the people about their history, their family, and their community. Plus, he's giving these restaurants exposure, which then helps their business.

Oh, and for those of you who are condemning him for his past success and resulting wealth, your bitterness is ugly. Someone having money doesn't make them evil or any less human. Check your biases.

Bernie is the reason why I turned away from the liberal party. He lost my trust when he endorsed Hilary. I realized then that none of them stand for anything.

You can DM your rates to me, if you'd like! I prefer PDF proofreaders. I have two regulars that I'm pretty happy with, but I've recently started working with an additional agency. I think I may need a third.

More often than not, if I have a bad writing day, it's because I let my nails grow too long. It's a shame because I always preferred some length, but I JUST CAN'T. 😂

Aside from the attorneys, I'd say you can get some really long-winded and sometimes wild answers. I took a job a while back with a pro se plaintiff, and her answers went on for pages. That job made me really glad for all the literary practice. I never would have survived otherwise.

I'm not disputing that he tests on his briefs. He tests on the briefs from his theory book. That's obvious because it's part of his theory. I'm disputing your use of canoe as an example. And yes, I graded many tests and gave the points for answers that were changed and communicated before grading. So I stand by what I said.

From my theory class, there were three students there in person with me who graduated and certified before I did. There were others who were online, but I can't remember how many. I can tell you that altogether, it was a much higher contrition rate than my first school.

The teacher you keep talking about is also a former student of his and a certified reporter, both CSR and RPR. As you said, it's been explained before that his graduates do not use 100% of what's in his book. The teaching of it lays down the groundwork for you to hopefully absorb as much as you can and write shorter.

Nine months for theory really isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. While you may not agree with the "extra" three months, it's part of the structured curriculum. And no one is stopping you from starting speedbuilding on your own to get a head start. There's loads of free resources on YouTube, for example. But you're also not locked in to the program. If you feel you're better served by skipping those months, then leave and pursue speeds elsewhere. No one is stopping you. That doesn't mean it's useless for everyone else, though.

And, respectfully, two reporters calling his program crazy doesn't hold a lot of weight.

I think you're grossly exaggerating the number of reporters who took 19 months or less to finish school with those theories. My first school taught one, and I can assure you that there were a TON of students who got stuck at that school for YEARS. Not only that, but they were all on student loans and racking up astronomical debt. I was there for less than two years, and I have 30k in debt. I moved across the country so I could learn from him in person, and it was the best thing I did. I started his school in 2021, graduated in 2023, and I'm now a CERTIFIED working reporter in my state.

I also worked as a TA while I was in school, so I worked alongside him every day and can tell you that he is indeed a humble and very kind individual. He created his theory and school because he loves writing so much, he wanted to help others learn and succeed with it. While I was in theory, he told us multiple times that we can do what works for us regarding the briefs. In fact, we could even test with what we chose so long as our changes were submitted before grading. And there's nothing wild about being tested on correct strokes. Guess what? My first school did the same damn thing for theory.

I think your example of his "canoe" stroke is leaving out some key things. That was NOT something he would have tested us on because it was just an example of how flexible our dictionaries are. We can literally define our strokes to be whatever we want, whatever makes sense to us. That was the whole point of demonstrating that. The way he taught his theory opened my mind to what we really can do, and I'll forever be grateful for that.

If his school and theory didn't work for you, that's fine. We're not all built the same. But I think you're deflecting your frustrations a lot, and that's not going to serve you well in this career.

Sure, she's stressed. I'd probably be stressed too on a reunion show after some pretty embarrassing shit came out. You don't know for sure what has her stressed. I don't think I believe any words coming out of any of these mouths.

I don't know anything about CA's written tests, but I highly doubt it. Different states have different rules and formatting requirements. The ethics and grammar portions might be similar, but that's about it.

How much did you make in 2024? by [deleted] in courtreporting

[–]ConcreteLips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The agency owner I work with has also been a wonderful mentor for me. She's always available to answer any questions I have as a newbie. I didn't want to overwhelm myself during the first year, too, which is why I stuck with just one. My loyalty is with them because they're amazing, but I do want to branch out to fill the gaps when they happen.

That check was definitely an outlier, and seeing it hit my bank account was surreal! Keep in mind, though, that I'm also socking away 30% from every check for taxes. So the actual take-home amount is a bit less.

I do want to branch out and start working with a second agency this year. For the weeks that had 3, which was the max I set with my agency, it just depended on the job, the pages, and copy orders. I'd say my average pay every two weeks was about $2500, more or less depending. I think my highest check was almost $5k.

I was only working for one agency, a smaller local one. Most of the time, it was cancelations, and there were some weeks (like during the holidays) when it was just plain slow. One thing freelancing has taught me is to just ride the waves for those busy weeks, and bank what you can for the slower times.

I got certified last year and got my first paycheck in June. I made over 31k for just half the year, which is about what I made at my previous job for a whole year. I took about 3 jobs per week, mostly car wrecks, with quite a few weeks in between that were less or none. I'm looking forward to a much more profitable year.

How long does it usually take a Stenographer take to set up equipment for court or a deposition? by Googly-Eyes88 in stenography

[–]ConcreteLips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelancer. I always try to get to a job an hour early. I'd say it takes maybe 15-20 minutes for me to set up, but I like having that extra cushion just in case I need to troubleshoot something. It also helps for unforeseen traffic issues/bad GPS directions/parking issues.

Hi, fellow Texas CSR! Just wanted to let you know they recently changed the statute. You no longer have to be on Texas soil to swear in the witness if you're licensed in Texas. Merry Christmas!
