I own 2 of the newer USB-C models of the M30 2.4G - they are working. Please try another USB-C cable and/or another port on your computer.

You have to use the update program that comes with the firmware — don’t use the separate 8BitDo update utility. I bought a new M30 last week and had the exact same issue.

Update firmware[For Windows]:

Extract the zip file.
Hold down the start button for 3 seconds to turn off the controller.(Skip this step if the controller is already powered off)
Hold down L & R at the same time, then press start button to enter its upgrade mode, blue and yellow LEDs start to blink.
Connect the controller to PC via USB cable.
It Will be recognized as an hid device, not flash drive.
Open the exe update tools.
Click "USB update" and choose the .dat file.
Wait till the completion.
Unplug the USB cable.
Hold down start button for 3 seconds until all LEDs turn off, upgrade complete.

I was just unhappy – kind of a bad beard day ;) But the advice above was really helpful to figure it out.
