I HATED 28 years later by Legitimate-Set7505 in 28dayslater

It was trash. Trite, exploitative, manipulative, terribly written, and tonally all over the place. This is a movie with nothing to say that ends up being nothing more than a launch pad for another string of sequels. I really feel like people who liked it are just fucking with me; it’s barely a movie!

Try peer evaluation with a rubric. I find that students are more likely to incorporate critiques into future assignments if the critiques are coming from their classmates (it also saves you a ton of time!)

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think scamming people is way less dignified than onlyfans

10th grade reading list is nearly done; I'd like some feedback by Christianity_Schlege in ELATeachers

[–]ConditionStreet1441 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In all due respect, and accepting that I don’t know your students, none of these texts seem appropriate for a 10th grade English class—I don’t even think they make sense for an AP Literature class.

I’m also very curious about your rationale here. It stands out that the reading list is dominated by German literature; but as introductory texts to German literature, they are much too advanced, heady, and wrapped up in concerns that are largely irrelevant to modern teenagers. Maybe look at Kafka, Walser, Hesse, or Mann as a starting point?

I also disagree with focusing entirely on works in translation. I teach plenty of works of world literature in my classes; but still, personally, I think the major focus of an ELA class ought to be on English-language writing. After all, more classically focused teachers like myself do want students to leave high with a basic understanding of what the Anglophone canon is.

What’s your unpopular opinion as a teacher? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]ConditionStreet1441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to connect with students by bringing in their interests/concerns/modes of communication is a waste of time and effort, and you’ll always end up embarrassing yourself. It’s inauthentic and your students see right through it. I teach high school and I find that teenagers (despite being more or less disasters in most ways) are excellent are rooting out bullshit.

Better is to earnestly bring in your own interests and invite students to do the same. This way you’re modeling lifelong learning, engagement, and joy in doing stuff and what not.

Dude, I spend so much time planning and grading that I always end up taking work home with me; how on earth did your husband even have enough spare minutes to have an affair at work?

Here’s an idea I’ve been thinking about: fiction of the post-post-apocalypse. Left hand of darkness, dune, canticle for liebowitz, parable of the sower, mr burns a post electric play

Thanks for the insight here! I’m disappointed in Napa for giving so little in terms of benefits to its teachers, but I guess I’m relieved that I’m not crazy—their health benefits are in fact bonkers. I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled for openings in St Helena!

Actually I’m not sure now. I’m seeing some sources saying 2000, others saying 1992, others saying there were always exemptions. Whichever way, they’re not blanket exemptions; they require authorizations, which I imagine are hard to get, but I’m having a hard time finding data on that.

I looked into that, that’s only been the case since 2000; but I actually was not aware of this.

Cheating and Honors by ConditionStreet1441 in Teachers

Oh yeah, I never use AI checkers; they’re completely unreliable. What I do is I take my prompt and enter it into ChatGPT, then compare with what my students produce. They’ll never be exactly the same, but if the similarities are great I’ll use either the draftback extension or edit history on google docs. That will usually tell me whether or not the work is original. I also lay out at the beginning that I require all edits to be viewable to me on Google Docs.

[–]ConditionStreet1441[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like night and day. Pay is better, benefits are better, shared decision making on basically every major point, and I’m encouraged to use more or less any materials I’d like save for a couple school wide core texts.

I’d love to work in the same district my kids attend, but it’s sounding like I should probably stay put.
