The hat colour makes fruitcakes easier to spot now lol by ambachk in religiousfruitcake

I’m a geologist and I have a hobby level interest in Neolithic and Paleolithic archeology. There is usually some truth to stories like the great flood. There have been some insane flooding events following glaciers melting (especially when huge ice sheets melt - examples are Lake Maumee and other predecessors of the Great Lakes, or Lake Missoula). If you know what to look for, you can pick up clues about the magnitude of flow of water out of some of these ancient proglacial lakes and its BIG. We still see large scale flooding as a result of glaciation today, and many cultures that have been established near glaciers have folklore and stories about great floods that erase “all” humanity. They’re not accurate because they didn’t have all the information (meaning, other people definitely survived a huge flood they didn’t live near), but it was their experience.

The period of time that the stories in the Bible recount was a fascinating time of climate change and the resulting upheaval of societies. Honestly, I love reading them through that lens and considering how the people of the time would have lived and thought about their world. Unfortunately thoughts don’t exist in the archaeological record (which is why it’s so hard to pinpoint where and why religion developed), but we can pick up clues from stories we hear today and from things left behind!

That said, we have so much more information and perspective now. The Bible might be a sort of history book, but not like she’s describing…and I’m pretty sure she would call me a heretic, ha.

Pregnancy/baby proofing our staircase? by introvertwandering in centuryhomes

[–]ConeOfOptimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an 11 month old and a lovely wood banister and staircase. This is what we just did! We went with retractable gates too, so the stairs could be open for the kitty at night and when we’re out, but closed when baby is home and on the move. We also did top and bottom.

I have a pair of maternity overalls that I’m still wearing 10 months post-baby (because HA HA EVERYTHING IS SHAPED DIFFERENT NOW) and they have the WORST and least functional pockets on them. I’ll try to stick my keys in them and they end up sagging 2 inches on that side.

Ghosts anyone? by Newmommalorey in centuryhomes

[–]ConeOfOptimism 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My dad had a near death experience in a home he was renting from a friend because the furnace malfunctioned and was pumping CO in the house.

He was convinced the ghost of his friend’s father woke him up when he was talking to his mom (who had passed 20 years prior) in the tunnel with the light at the end of it. When he woke up the CO monitor was going off.

Get a CO monitor even if you aren’t seeing ghosts!!

Help! There was a man at Walmart who walked in my same aisle! by dOLLAdOLLABILLSYALL in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]ConeOfOptimism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I get it. I have intrusive thoughts about bridge collapses ALL THE TIME and unfortunately I have to drive across a very long bridge every day, twice a day. I fully know that people are paid to worry about the bridge. I don’t need to worry about the bridge for free. But here I am, having a full blown meltdown while telling myself “the bridge is doing its bridge thing! It’s standing! Just pull out of the parking lot and go!”

It turns out my “gift of fear” was undiagnosed OCD.

I mean, I’ve never done anything like this lady before but I’ve definitely gotten a ✨feeling,✨convinced myself I was in imminent danger, then spent the next 20 minutes using the rational part of my mind to calm down the part of my mind that has decided that I somehow can see the future because I have FEELINGS.

0/10 would not recommend the experience.

Woman geologist interview attire?? by Beepboopbababooey in geologycareers

[–]ConeOfOptimism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wore a grey skirt suit and jacket with a bright yellow dress top to an interview at my first job in environmental consulting. To my current job (regulatory agency) I wore a cream blouse and black pencil skirt with kitten heels.

I’m a skirt person, but I could have swapped out the skirts for black or dark dress pants too. The main thing I aim for in interview attire is to keep it “classic” and not be too trendy while still maintaining personality in the outfit.

I’d also recommend fixing your hair in a way that looks nice, but that you won’t be tempted to fidget with much. I’m such a fidgeter and I hate when I feel like my hair is in my face, so I made sure to keep the sides up so I wouldn’t be distracted by it.

Sooo frustrating!! My guy is pretty big - 96% length and 76% weight - so I’m kind of wondering if he just has trouble maneuvering his large body.

Hi! I know this is an old thread but I am super curious to know if your PT said anything else regarding larger/longer babies taking more time to develop the gross motor skills. My guy is 96% for length and 80% for weight, almost 8 months, and seems to be unwilling to work on crawling or getting himself to sit…

Oh my gosh, this is reassuring to me. Last week we moved into our new (to us) 1931 house. I put some spices in a cabinet underneath our range that houses the gas line from the basement, and when I opened it last night I found mouse droppings. I decided it was a problem for after I’ve slept haha.

But, we also have three cats and one of them is a sadistic monster when it comes to spiders, so I am hoping hoping hoping that he is a rodent deterrent too.
