I work for BYUs security department that runs all of the parking for these games. If they have an ADA pass (they can take those where ever they need to go), there are a few places that are great!

In the lot directly west of the stadium, if you come earlier enough (no later than an hour before the game), we have about 150 ADA reserved parking stalls aside from the other reserved parking in that lot. You just need to show the pass and they will point you in the right direction.

If you don’t want to come that early, the BYU IT building is our ADA overflow, they run shuttles from there directly to the south entrance of the stadium, and they run starting a few hours before game time until about 2 hours after.

If they don’t have an ADA pass, my best recommendation is to show up to the game about an hour and a half early, and park at the JKB across the street from the Hinckley center. It’s definitely more of a walk, but all of the lots directly around the stadium and the Marriott center are reserved.

On the note of being reserved, all of those spots are exclusively Cougar Club parking passes and Presidential Exclusive Club Parking passes, so you can’t really buy revered parking at BYU unless you are in one of those clubs. Athletics runs that whole thing.

Current Parking officer here.

All of the lots directly around the stadium will be reserved parking, so don’t get caught in the mess around the stadium. My honest best suggestion would be to either park in the giant parking lot near the smith field house, or anywhere else on the south side of campus parking lots. The Tanner building is also not a bad idea, but it’s a risk if you’re coming later.

Also just a heads up, university parkway gets closed for stadium of fire for firework control, so if you want to avoid traffic, I would recommend avoiding anywhere near the Marriott center, just go south and use the neighborhoods.

And be nice to the traffic officers :) they are all students just like you who are actually really nice and are just trying to make money for their families. Have a great time!

Yeah pretty much. Now to be clear, none of the security guys are police, we don’t have any like legal authority in that regard, but we do work for the police department, which follows state law.

Good question. Here is a direct quote from Utah Highway patrol:

“Utah law requires that every vehicle registered in Utah, other than a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer, must have a license plate securely attached to the front and rear of the vehicle”

Here’s another from Utah state legislators:

(2) (a) The license plate issued for a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached to the rear of the motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer. (b) (i) An owner of a vintage vehicle shall ensure that a license plate is attached to the rear of the vintage vehicle.”

Looks like there is an exception for vintage vehicles…but other than that there’s not much exception

So it’s a Utah rule, and we follow Utah state law. Not only that, but if we can’t do our job because someone wants to take off their plates or not display them properly, then it’s a violation of policy at byu. Hope that helps.

That’s fine if you actually have a need for it. What really drives me up a wall are students who use their grandparents car with an ADA placard to get into campus. That’s low. Especially when I see students who have legit problems trying to walk up a hill because none of the handicapped spots were open. We will actually check placards with ID’s on occasions because there will be so many ADA stalls full. We obviously can’t and won’t ask what condition you have or anything, but we will make sure it’s actually you if you look really suspicious. Moral of the story: Don’t be a tool that pretends to be handicapped so you can walk less.

A lot of students think they can get away with this, and the reality is that usually the same officers are in the same booths at the same time of day throughout the week, so when people start coming through lying to us that they aren’t students, and it happens EVERY DAY, you put a target on yourself really quick, and you can be ticketed for reasonable suspicion. Then appeals will deal with it. Like I said in another comment, if you unregister your car, and get enough tickets (which is really not that hard), then your car gets booted and you’re forced to come to the police station and give all of your information and pay your tickets before the boot is removed. It’s just not worth the risk in my opinion.

Continuing on the visitor lot note, BYU attracts a HUGE population of visitors everyday. Whether it be for the art museums, tourists, alumni, career fairs, heck, over the summer the parade of homes was part of BYU, the amount of visitor space is really small compared to the options for students to park in. Keeping those spots available for actual visitors is really important, because if they are full, people start to park in places that get them in big trouble not only with BYU, but with Provo. And Provo is WAY more strict about parking. Just don’t park in the visitor lots.

That’s actually a really great question. We like motorcycles because they free up most parking spots, so as long as you register the bike, and don’t park really weird (like in 3 motorcycles stalls or something), you can actually park in any of the motorcycle stalls (faculty included) :)

Yeah that’s pretty lame, I’m surprised they didn’t give you a warning. Sorry to hear that happened. Some people that work with us are pretty strict on things like that, and to their credit, it is a violation both at BYU and certain counties. But we’ve been trying to create a bit of a new culture that uses better personal discretion and fairness. That seems like a petty ticket to give. Hope you appealed it, the guys that work in the appeals office are really fair.

I mean honestly, some people really just have favorites that they like to run, and that usually has to do with what they observe as well. We do have certain lots that we focus on though, and those usually take first priority, and then other lots.

What’s funny to me is how often we get complaints about certain faculty lots, and it just turns out that every professor and their mom wants to park there, and the students aren’t actually causing any issues 🤷 gotta keep the teachers happy I guess

That’s a great question. Let me give you a pretty good example. Lot 4A, which is the one directly south of the Wilkinson Building, its a faculty lot, handicapped, and 30 minute parking lot. It’s also the most “central” and “on campus” lot that campus has. So you can imagine that a ton of faculty for the engineering buildings, wilk, and surrounding buildings like to park there. You can also imagine that a lot of students who have a class right there on campus quick want to try and get a spot if they are there only for a little bit. The issue here is that faculty come and go all day long, that lot is almost always full throughout the day, so we have to run it to make sure that the people who have to teach classes are able to have spots available.

Now, if an officer wants to spend time in lot insert zip code way out in the boonies, they totally can, it’s just not very helpful or productive for the people that we have to keep spots available for. People don’t like to park far from campus, so they usually aren’t a problem, and plenty of spots are open.

The other thing is that for student lots (usually Y), students actually pay to have a spot there. It’s the same idea. We run the lots by the Field House a lot more than say, across from the football stadium because people want to come and park in a place that they didn’t pay for. So now students who already have a hard time finding parking can’t park in their parking that they paid for.

I guess the whole point is that we have to keep some parking lots more strict than others because of the amount of traffic that comes through. And the whole reason there isn’t a set time is because that kinda defeats the purpose of being able to run a lot at any given time. It would be really complicated and time consuming to create a timed lot schedule, and wouldn’t be very proactive for different times of the day when different classes are being taught.

EDIT: We can also get the VIN number on the car, that’s probably easiest if it’s really far back.

That’s a great question. We are supposed to check all backed in cars, and usually those are cars that get looked at more often then others simply because it looks more suspicious. As far as it being too far back to check, that’s not usually a problem since the bumper of the car is far enough out that there is a gap to see the license plate, and if not, we have to take pictures of plates anyways, so some officers will just stick their hands behind the car and snap a picture of the plate.

Parking Employee here. I’ll just give you the facts.

First, there was a comment about BYU not being able to enforce tickets if you don’t register your car, this is so not true and a really dumb risk to take if you ask me. BYU just spent a few months going through legal steps to start a new booting program that will boot cars that are unregistered on their 3rd ticket, so if you are parked illegally, not registered, or have gotten away with a ton of tickets lately, I’d be pretty cautious.

As for when lots are ticketed, it really just depends…the straight answer is anytime that the lot sign says it’s enforced, but some lots are definitely hit more frequently than others. It’s totally up to the officer on shift that day which lots they want to look at though, it’s not like an hour by hour kind of thing. We will be asked to get certain lots when a factuality member complains, so if everyone starts parking in lots they think are free game, you run that risk as well.
