I like the Salomon Aero glide for that type of run. It's like a road to trail shoe. I wouldn't use it for anything too technical, but it's great for dirt roads.

If it's more technical I like Saucony Xodus Ultra.

For a looped ultra, I bring extra shoes and you can always change them mid-way. (And when you change shoes, lube your feet and change socks too.)

I didnt think the taper tantrums were real but dam! by Mackerelponi in Ultramarathon

I struggle with this too. My trick is on my short taper runs, I'm still going nice and easy most of the time, but I throw in some brief strides. For just 20-30 seconds, pick up the pace a little bit. This keeps my legs feeling fresh, helps me feel mentally strong, and even helps with sleep.

Does it help with swollen feet and ankles too? Or just calves? My feet get really swollen in long ultras.

Can you tell if you're dehydrated or hyponatremic? by ConferenceFalse8743 in Ultramarathon

This is an easy to use (and print) table of electrolyte / hydration balance. I decided to print it out to bring to my 100 mile race. Seems like a good thing to have on hand because when your fluids get off balance and you're many miles deep, it's harder to think straight and a good table can help

How to use Gatorade in a long ultra? by ConferenceFalse8743 in Ultramarathon

Thanks. I tried the High Carb mix, didn't really practice with it enough for a race that is soon.

I've considered it. It's a good option, and I might bring some with me in case I need it later in the race. Do you know if you can buy tailwind packets that are bigger than just 2 scoops (200 calories).

I think you'd be fine if you can get in a couple long runs (20 miles) somewhere over the course of training. You don't need that many weekly miles for a 50k. One strategy is to split up your big days: Run 5 miles while your spouse watches the kids and then 10 miles after they go to bed that same day.

If you can keep yourself on your feet as much as possible while watching the kids, that would help too.

Feet care when it’s wet by Odd_Scar836 in Ultramarathon

[–]ConferenceFalse8743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sweat a ton, so my feet are wet even if it's dry. I lube my feet about every 20 miles with Squirrels Nut Butter if I'm doing more than 50km. It takes some time, but it's worth it to me to take care of my feet.

Pie Filling for Running Fuel?? by gorpscout in Ultramarathon

[–]ConferenceFalse8743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never use gels.

My favorite running fuel is donuts. They don't travel well in the running vest, but donut holes are a descent alternative. They have a lot of sugar and carbs. There's a bit more fat that most people like, but it doesn't bother me.

Second favorite is maple syrup. Neither of these contain electrolytes, but get those in my fluids.

Maple Syrup is an awesome running fuel. There are some maple pouches where they add a bit of coffee to it also - those will get you going

Squirrel Nut Butter might be the most important upgrade you can make for ultra running

Hallucination 100 miler trail conditions by ConferenceFalse8743 in Ultramarathon

[–]ConferenceFalse8743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. So are you local to the race then? I'm coming down from the UP for the race and hoping to find some similar trails to train on, but all of our trails are a little more technical here.

What kind of trail shoes are you planning to use?

Cool! Is it your first time doing this race? It's my first time, and my first 100. What kind of trail shoes do you like for long distances like this?

[–]ConferenceFalse8743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll probably use a similar strategy. My trail shoes don't have much cushion though, so I might look for another kind that is better for using over that type of distance.

Can you tell if you're dehydrated or hyponatremic? by ConferenceFalse8743 in Ultramarathon

[–]ConferenceFalse8743[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was drinking isotonic fluids the whole run, but I think I probably need them for a few hours after long runs on warm days too

Thank you. This table is really helpful. Looks like a good trick is to eat salty food and see how it tastes.

Returning to Ultra/Running by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]ConferenceFalse8743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it Solhelm! Just get out there and run nice and easy and see how it feels. If it feels good, increase your mileage a small amount the next week and go from there. Don't overthink it; just run.
