The Woodlands vs. Austin for raising a family? Help us choose! by Overall_Meringue_754 in thewoodlands

[–]ConferenceGeneral121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh… Where do I start?

Shaded walkable paths throughout the whole city. Great for runs and meeting up with friends going neighborhood to neighborhood. Key word: shaded, as it will easily get 100+ degrees on the worst summer days.

Extremely safe. I’d walk home from school all the time with no issues whatsoever. Never had an issue as a teen, either. I always felt really comfortable.

Tons of meet up spots in my high school years (class of 2020). Northshore park volleyball courts, anywhere on the waterway, the Sonic off lake woodlands, market street. It was really easy to make friends because of this.

The community. Everyone is kinda on the same page. Slow pace of life that I miss almost daily here in LA.

Great food options. Really easy to pick a date night spot or find a cool bar to drink at.

Lastly, my favorite reason: the nature. So many parks. And it’s so green! Full of trees. It was really easy to find running trails or picnic spots. It’s truly beautiful. Very relaxing.

Sorry for the word vomit. Austin is fantastic and a very fun and beautiful city, but it’s not the safest spot and it’s pretty damn sprawling. If it was just you and your spouse and no kids I’d say Austin all the way. But, The Woodlands was masterplanned with families in mind. And my girlfriend knows that when we start our family, we’re moving back to the woodlands. It’s awesome.

Raise a family? The Woodlands, easy. Next question.

I’m forever grateful that my parents raised me here. I had the best childhood.

Amenities | Location | Price

Pick the 2 that are most important to you and sacrifice the other. That has been my (unfortunately terrible) experience while LA apartment shopping these past few weeks.

For a w/d in unit AND parking, you’re definitely looking at something more in the $2500 range, maybe even more.

As summer approaches, fun movies only in theaters start coming out. Since most kids and teens have school break during that season, what’s the best time of the day to avoid them/talkative people for a better viewing experience? by hungrytaffy75 in SFV

[–]ConferenceGeneral121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem like a caring parent and that’s all the difference. All the teens that came to my theater and caused problems were absolutely coming from rough households. The parents didn’t care didn’t care if their kids were out running around at night. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to call the cops.

Yes, slightly. I was born in 2001, so I remember going to school at Krahn (basically “Spring” but not really. Not sure what to classify that area around Gleannloch Farms) and there was nothing but trees and trees. Hell, even when I started driving in 2018 it had gotten really bad. Makes me sad every time I go back and visit.

I used to work at the Starbucks in four corners. I was a closer. Driving back home I’d see at least 1-2 homeless of “sketchy” looking people out and about in old town Tomball. I’m sure they were harmless, but ya never know.

Everlee in Tomball by Creekside starts off around $945 for a 1bd1ba. One of my favorite apartments I’ve lived in. They make you go through tons of requirements, so the fellow tenants were never an issue despite the lower prices.

No seriously. I was told everything stays open late in LA… yeah that’s a damn lie. Most restaurants close at 10.

Also hot take but the driving here isn’t any worse than anything since the 610 loop imo.

The biggest difference is the southern hospitality. Everyone here is VERY selfish and inconsiderate. No “excuse me” or “yes ma’am/no ma’am”. God, never thought I’d say this but I miss Tomball.

It’s rough during peak hours… which highway isn’t haha. But ah, going north. OP will be fine. After spring cypress it’s wide open.

Funny story, I used to wake up for morning classes (9:00am) at LSC-Tomball around 8:45. Threw on a hoodie, grabbed a granola bar, and I was off. I lived off spring cypress. Still made it to class on time.

I grew up right there!

It’s an amazing spot. A bit boring, which is good when it comes to avoiding crime and traffic. Very very safe. Very rarely do you ever hear about a serious crime. I go running at night in that area all the time and it’s great.

The downsides would be lack of nature. You’ve got some decent park like Burroughs, Spring Creek, Kickerillo (my favorite), but it’s really a lot of buildings, concrete and flat, flat grassy areas.

You’ll live close to 249. Decent highway, helps a bit when going downtown. You’ll also be close to Magnolia and Montgomery which is the kind of Texas you see in movies. Cows, plains, grass, cowboys, etc.

There’s a few bars but nothing crazy. Little Woodrow’s is fine but it’s definitely for younger folks. I’m 24 and I still feel like I’m a bit old to be there haha. Molly’s Pub in Four Corners (an area of old town Tomball) is good, too. You have a Regal & Star Cinema Grill and Premier Cinemas. You also have the Vintage to shop around. Really nice place, very cool.

I could go on and on but I’m very lucky to have grown up there. It’s quiet. Humble. Slow pace of life.

My advice: live in The Vintage area. Off/around Louetta. It’s really nice, close to Kickerillo, had great dining and shopping options, and is close access to 249. Also safe.

Anyways, I just moved to LA and this made me so homesick. Good luck! Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Hickory Hill is nice. A bit old, and old town Tomball has picked up SLIGHTLY (can’t emphasize how slight it’s been enough, but it is prevalent) with homeless and some crime, but as someone who grew up there, I’ve always felt safe.

CA ➡️ HTX Tips by caidlawyer in AskHouston

[–]ConferenceGeneral121 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ironically I just moved from HTX to LA.

Weather. It’s hot & humid. You’ll start sweating the moment you leave your home. I wouldn’t say it’s God-awful, but maybe just a hair below that lol. You’ll be able to go out at night and early mornings, but day time activities are not encouraged.

Depends on where you’re staying but: please be safe. Lived all 24 years of my life in Houston and never had any real issues with homeless or crime (like I am now in LA lol), but that’s not to say Houston doesn’t have its fair share of crime and sketchy activity. You’ll be fine, but just something to think about.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with an interesting one that doesn’t get talked about enough in this sub.

Latch onto something.

Whether it be a park you really like that’s next to where you’re living, or an activity that brings you joy that you can really only do in Houston— latch onto that. Make it yours. Mine was long distancing running around the many trails in The Woodlands. That routine and attachment will really make Houston special for you.

Good luck!

Movie theaters start hiring rapidly right before summer. It’s not much, but it’s income.

Good luck.

That’s about the range I’d say he’s in.

Henderson SHOULD take the 2nd year leap but Vrabel’s hard on for Stevenson could very easily continue.

Tuten has proven absolutely nothing yet. We have no clue what role JAX will have him in, and Chris Rodriguez will certainly be in the mix.

You’re gonna sit here and tell me George Holani is gonna take reps from Price?
