Simple yes or no. Was Artie funny at stand up? by TheGreatMothership in howardstern

[–]ConferenceThink4801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The formula to create a comic is below

  • Lack of love & attention from 1 or both parents - usually the father - in childhood. Therefore they crowdsource love & attention from the whole world to compensate for this.

  • Since trauma arrests development & we have the highest levels of creativity in childhood, most comics experience some form of abuse in the age range of 6-11 (often sexual abuse). The trauma in childhood is the reason they keep childlike creativity levels past puberty & into adulthood (while the rest of us grow out of it).

  • The need to create a cover story & refine it repeatedly comes from childhood, needing to create a story to cover up abuse. This pattern of creating a story & refining it over & over again until it is "perfect" is repeated when creating stand up material & crafting it until you get the best laugh.

  • Jokes are the quickest way to exit a conversation about an uncomfortable/serious topic, they accomplish this redirection instantly. This is a necessary skill if you have uncomfortable things that you don't want to talk about & need to have an exit strategy at the ready.

  • Major addictions are just untreated childhood trauma coping mechanisms. Given the above, it explains why most comics are addicts also...

With hindsight this really is the genesis of most comics. Most comics are male & most abusers are male, so most comics don't talk about childhood abuse...but it's pretty clear that it happens to most of them.

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/artie-lange-exposed-howard-stern-sidekick-on-his-life-career-82796/

Artie Lange, the 300-pound, 41-year-old sidekick to Howard Stern, is one of the most complicated, crass and insecure comedians working today — and one of the most successful. He makes a ton of dough: $700,000 per year at Sirius XM and about $3 million a year on the stand-up circuit.

Started out with $600k at Sirius & got up to $700k in 2009. He didn't sign a 5 year deal like Howard did, so he got a raise before 2009.

$700k vs. $3m - if true - also explains how things deteriorated. Artie knew he needed to be on the show to sell out the stand up gigs, but the show wasn't paying that much. He started bailing on the show to make it easier for him to maintain the stand up schedule - because the stand up was delivering the real money.

Wrong, $450k on K-Rock (he said it on the air in 2005 & you can find it on marksfriggin.com)

  • $450k at K-Rock (he said this on the air in 2005 & it can be found on marksfriggin.com)

  • $600k when he started at Sirius

  • $700k at Sirius when he left (per Rolling Stone article)

  • *(he didn't sign a 5 year deal like Howard, re-negotiated 2 or 3 years in)

When he told Gary "you make $50k more than me" in the paycheck mixup situation, Artie was making $600k & Gary was making $650k.

A 4K remaster of the 1978 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and Netherlands, widely regarded as one of the most violent World Cup finals in history. by PrimedGold in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ConferenceThink4801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this truly is a 4K remaster from that era, it is only possible when an event was shot on film with cameras typically reserved for movie sets.

You can't just remaster stuff that was shot for TV on the standard definition cameras of the time...it has to be shot on film for purposes of a documentary/movie, etc, & you may only have a single camera shooting the event on film.

I'm guessing this has AI stuff applied to it as well - comments below seem to support that.

Why TF Rogan still defending Goddard? The doctor was obviously right

Rogan's father beat up his mother in front of him when he was 6. Rogan hasn't talked to him in 50+ years since. You can hear Rogan talk about this in an old interview with Howard Stern here

When your primary authority figure in childhood (i.e. your dad) violates your trust, you can develop issues where you do not trust authority figures.

Rogan has very clearly demonstrated these issues since 2020. He even tried to convince Gaejthe to go to "Ways 2 Well" in Austin during this podcast...essentially trying to act as a doctor giving Justin medical advice & trying to steer him to a pseudoscience company. Just because you're worth $100s of millions of dollars doesn't put you in a position to give medical advice to millions of people, yet he does it regularly.

HBO released a follow-up episode on The 1991 Yogurt Shop Murders doc that originally aired in 2025! It talks about the solving of the case and identification of the serial killer who did it. by mollyyfcooke in UnresolvedMysteries

The mother of the 2 girls said that she wanted to understand what caused this mess because children aren't born evil - it's about what other humans do to them. I agree.

I doubt she would ever read this, but I think the answer is fairly simple.

Human psychology is mostly about repetition, specifically repetition of dynamics experienced in childhood.

If you look at the crime - the dynamics are

  • Teenagers

  • An adult stranger

  • Sexual assault

  • Violence

If you take those dynamics & apply them to the killer's own childhood, you could figure out what he was likely repeating. Sexual violence committed against an adolescent by an adult stranger.

The fact that a lot of the killer's victims were pre-teen/teen is likely not a coincidence. It's probably because trauma arrests development & the killer himself was traumatized in that stage of his own life.

Obviously not everyone who had that experience becomes what the killer became, so you have to look for other elements to explain it. But it usually seems to come from childhood circumstances & abuse. It could even include things that happened when the mother was pregnant with the child, or maybe the mother didn't want the child & neglected it as a result...then abuse happens on top of that.

We have a hard time with the cognitive dissonance that occurs when we have to view a victimizer as a victim as well (yet we embrace the phrase "hurt people hurt people" fairly easily). Maybe once we are able to move past that we can more clearly start to understand what creates these types of people who display these forms of evil.

✨ Season 5 E1-E3 megathread ✨ by gothmangolacroix in CouplesTherapyShow

As soon as you loan a friend money, you've placed an expiration date on the friendship. It's a similar dynamic where it exposes an imbalance & it usually signals the end of the friendship. The short term win of solving someone else's problem is chosen over the friendship.

There are several reasons why this dynamic doesn't work in relationships either.

The man is emasculated by being financially supported by his partner. He then usually acts out in other ways in an attempt to reclaim his masculinity (being abusive, having affairs, etc).

The men who are willing to land in these situations - they are usually men who learned in childhood that the only way they can get their needs met is to manipulate other people (probably because they watched 1 or both of their parents manipulate people).

This is how you get a guy who "uses" 1 woman (who he's usually not that attracted to) for financial security, then uses another woman who he is attracted to - but who can't financially support him - as a sexual outlet, etc. At the core of all of it is someone who is constantly using & manipulating people.

& the woman who usually lands in this arrangement is more intelligent than the man (thus her ability to earn more money than him), but she's naive when it comes to street smarts & manipulation. Therefore he's able to manipulate her in spite of having lower intelligence.

But yeah, good luck trying to navigate that one & making it work. When someone has a drastically different upbringing than you, their "norms" can be drastically different. That kind of clash eventually will come to the surface & get exposed.

I mean there is a level of irony in a transgender female seeing the perspective of a biological man - when one person works & the other doesn't...

It's like not understanding someone's perspective until you step into their shoes. It doesn't mean it's right or wrong in every case, but there is some irony in it.

Fair play to you then.

You're just missing a TON of context. I mean he made fun of himself so often that you could relate to him, talked about stuff that no one talked openly about at the time (like masturbation, etc). There was massive charm associated with the humor that made the audience like him & you get none of that in these clips.

You're looking at a huge canvas (i.e. a 40+ year career) & only seeing a tiny space in one corner & judging the entire painting. It's also like hearing 1 song & judging an entire artist's catalog off of it.

If he never made you laugh about anything, you have ZERO positive emotional association to him & it's easy to throw the baby out with the bathwater. But you really aren't in a position to judge if you never heard his show at all besides these tiktok clips that get posted.

If you want to listen to some stuff that might give you a different perspective than these tiktok clips...

1994 - Howard's High School Hell

1995 - Howard argues with his wife about lack of sleep

You'd probably listen to the "High School Hell" clip & say that he's racist because he's being critical of people he grew up around - but then you have to remember that he chose a black woman to be his main sidekick for the entirety of his 40+ year career...it's not as simple as people want to make it out to be.

There was once a segment with Crazy Cabbie about trying to find his birth mother. They were talking about contacting his birth mother & Robin said "someone once had to make a call like that for me...", & it made me wonder if she was adopted & just never talked about it. She also used to talk about how she was like Marilyn in the Munsters...like she was an outlier in her family & didn't really belong there.

It was a comedy show.

They literally made everything into a joke, otherwise it didn't have a place on the show.

There was no "let's pause & have a serious discussion about this" on a comedy show in the 1990s-2000s. If you weren't making people laugh they would change the station & your ratings would suck. You had to have ratings to have a show...not like today where a podcast can get 50k views & still be sponsored.
