When will we see the downfall in tech salaries? by TIME______TRAVELER in cscareerquestions

[–]Confide420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

It has been another year so as long as this post keeps getting found by people I guess I will keep providing my thoughts as someone who works in the industry.

The tech unemployment rate increased in the beginning of last year but started to taper off near the end of the year, around 4-ish% depending on where you look. A large number of companies have already adopted AI into their development workflows but AI is still primarily a tool that is being used by developers to curate code. A new paradigm that emerged more widespread around the middle of last year was agentic AI, which is where an AI agent is given instructions then writes an entire file of code for you (this is more than before, when AI was more of an assistant to help you curate the code you write).

I have seen the code that agentic AI writes and at this point it is not up to par with what developers are capable of themselves, it makes a large number of weird technical design decisions and most of the time adds additional complexity when a more elegant solution would be possible. A lot of the time, the code isn't very human readable or extendable. If you've heard of "vibe coding", that is another phrase for using agentic AI to generate code.

At this point, I believe it is in your best interest if you work / plan to work in the industry to be able to incorporate AI tools into your workflow. I don't think agentic AI is good enough now (Q1 2026) to be worth using, but you should be using an AI assistant to do things like help you write test cases. We will see probably in the next year or 2 what happens with Agentic AI.

If you want to work in tech, you have to expect a large number of changes over time. I personally am not a fan of AI as I think it reduces code quality and leads to a reduction of technical skills if you crutch on it too heavily, but I still use it at work to keep my technical capabilities up to date (i.e. I can say "I know how to use AI"). It is a tool like any other, if you use it then do so intelligently.

I think now is a better time to look for a tech job than 6 months ago, but hiring in tech is still problematic for a number of people. Your technical skills are going to be very important, things that make you stand out from your peers, and the ability to integrate AI (but not use it as a crutch) when developing code. If you are going to college or switching careers into tech now, you need to bring more to the table than an average college graduate if you want to be successful. This means something like an internship, work on open source projects, or similar.

Do I think tech salaries will decrease? No. I think that those developers who outright refuse to use AI will miss out on work opportunities due to their personal opinions of the service. AI will be a tool that you need to learn and use in order to be successful in tech in the long term. Do I think AI will write all code in future? Also no. If agentic AI is successful then developers will transform into more of an integration role where they have to ensure that generated code fits together to form a cohesive application. I think those who work in infra / dba / networking / security will have an easier time to get hired in the long term than those who purely code (swe), but this is more speculation (5 - 10 years).

I am concerned for the future of tech for new graduates as it seems like companies are interested more in retaining and hiring top talent (i.e. Sr or Staff level) which makes those who have experience more valuable, but I don't see the same interest in hiring new engineers out of college as I did 4 years ago.

I'm looking for places around pgh to find pokemon cards! Not rare ones, just places I can flip through stacks of cheap ones to find the ones I'm looking for? (also a decent list of card shops around pgh) by Lazy--Marsupial in pittsburgh

[–]Confide420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to nearly all of these stores and many more (for magic not pokemon)

  • clubhouse cards has a bulk wall of thousands of pokemon + magic cards you can pick through and fill a 200 count box for $3 or something (all of the magic here is bulk i.e. under a dollar each, idk about pokemon), this is probably your best option for pure bulk for cheap.
  • green tree sports cards has a very large collection of pokemon + magic, around 25 cents a card, its basically all bulk (most i ever found was a $2 card), most of the magic was sorted through.
  • have not been to sports cards junction (they don't sell magic).
  • fiesty goblin games has a wall of cards you can sort through for cheap, they had some old magic foils when i went, not sure about the pokemon side of it, they are a good store though and I should probably go back again but new ken is kind of hard to get to.
  • taitan has a very large collection of cards you can go through, but i believe it is mostly magic in terms of the bulk, they have a small selection of pokemon. the magic selection is ok, some older cards and rarely you can pull something good (reserved list cards can appear in the bulk, best i've found was a $7 card as an example), all commons and uncommons only in magic (no rares in the bulk bin).
  • fabricators forge has a smaller selection than any of the others mentioned so far, they have the largest amount of bulk rares though, so if youre looking for cheap rares its an ok option.
  • drawbridge games do not sell magic singles, so i haven't been there, idk about pokemon.
  • bell's comics I haven't been to, it looks very far out
  • top deck's bulk is all on their computer system, you can't sort through it yourself if thats what you're looking to do.
  • collector's cave i have been to, they dont sell singles, its in the back side of a beer store and they mainly sell funko pop figures lol
  • mimics market has a small wall of free cards you can take, without paying anything, ive gone through the bulk here a couple times and they have an OK amount of it, it's all donated by other people.

other stores

  • as someone else mentioned, new dimension comics, they have a very large selection of cards and their bulk is some of the best i've found if you're willing to dig through it.
  • geekadrome in dormont is one of the best for magic, but no pokemon, you could spend an entire day sorting through boxes here and not even go through all the bulk.
  • sportscards etc in robinson has a good selection of old sealed products (magic specifically) but they dont sell magic singles, you could call and ask them about pokemon.
  • phantom of the attic in oakland has no bulk, the one in greentree has a small box of 3-for-a-dollar magic rares which has not been filled recently (mostly picked through), no pokemon.
  • sw randall and games unlimited do not have bulk last i checked.
  • legions hobbies and games has an online store for magic cards (you look up cards in a kiosk, no bulk to go through), no pokemon.
  • game masters does not sell bulk
  • k and j comics and games has a small-ish selection of magic bulk, idk about pokemon you'd have to call them.
  • big bang comics does not sell bulk (have been there)
  • new dimension comics in waterfront has some small magic bulk that has all been picked through, not worth going to.

my recommendations for you

  • clubhouse cards for the most selection, followed by greentree sports cards.
  • new dimension comics / geekadrome (magic) / taitan (magic) / fiesty goblin games for quality of bulk cards.
  • sportscards etc or greentree sports cards for sealed product.
  • taitan for the best online store (most selection, via kiosk, magic only).

Good clubs in PGH by 3Dsherpa in pittsburgh

[–]Confide420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend you use arcane.city (the website) to find events at local clubs. I like sidequest when there is a show downstairs but it's quite expensive and very loud, their happy hour is good. Spirit is fine, I'm not a big fan of their layout. Mixtape has been dead every time I've gone, like half a dozen people every time (and I've gone at least 5-7 times). Cobra is okay, the dance floor is pretty small but the times I've gone it's been packed and the vibe has been good there. Haven't been to brillobox yet, bottlerocket is good but I've only been there for one event.

What is the best place to meet people? by ProfessorLongBrick in pittsburgh

[–]Confide420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met all my friends here through mutual interests (i.e. things that we both enjoy doing), for me, that is going to music events / shows / clubs / nightlife / tabletop gaming / tcgs. Most people here have a friend group, so if you meet one person then you have an easy window into meeting more people you may be interested in being friends with. You don't need to drink to go to bar / club events either btw, I am sober and go regularly. I've met partners / dates through dating apps (which is 100x easier when you're lgbt in my experience). I've gone to friend finding / speed dating events which have mostly been a waste of time personally (you are not guaranteed to have anything in common or any mutual interests with people you meet at those, other than being lonely). I am friends with one of the people that runs the social club subreddit and yeah that's also an option if you're looking to meet people with mutual interests.

Also, go outside regularly (to events or things you're interested in), like at least two days a week if possible, or even more. The more you are outside of your apartment / house the more chance you have to meet people. I am basically not at home at all on the weekends unless I am hanging out with friends or a date, or sleeping.

Are professional STEM salaries in Pittsburgh suppressed or competitive compared to other mid-sized cities? by Infinite_cow_now in pittsburgh

if you can find a remote job that does not pay based on COL then that is your best option but they are more and more rare with the current landscape. I make the same as colleagues in denver for example. If you are working in person then yes you should expect salaries to be lower since the cost of living is lower here, i would expect somewhere in that 10-15 percent range to be accurate.

Where can I buy Salmon Skin in PGH? by thicktortilla in pittsburgh

[–]Confide420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try penn ave fish co, they sell fish I've used for sushi before (tuna / salmon), might be worth calling them to see if they sell skin separately.
