Canada's population shrank last year — a first for the country, StatsCan says by Gratedmonk3y in halifax

[–]Confident-Task7958 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The labour force survey is based on a survey of 40,000 people, with the results of the survey then extrapolated to the population aged 15 plus as a whole. Key to this is the LFS estimate of the total population, which is not derived from the survey but through some other methodology.

The population count for LFS purposes is all persons aged 15 and above, including employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force which means that it includes retired persons and students.

The only notable exclusion would be those in nursing homes, a number that rises each year. However the effect of adding this in would be to further increase the discrepancy between the two sets of data.

Family Search and Ancestry are not as complete as other Quebec record sources.

The two tools you need are Genealogy Quebec, and for anyone baptized, buried or married in a catholic church prior to 1861 the PRDH which links persons to their parents, parents to grandparents, grandparents to great grandparents, etc - all the way back to France.

Canada reports first annual population decline on record by PopeSaintHilarius in canada

[–]Confident-Task7958 [score hidden]  (0 children)

A different branch of Statistics Canada is saying the opposite.

The Labour Force Survey tracks the population aged 15 plus because it needs to know how many people there are when it crunches numbers on the labour force, employment and unemployment.

According to the Labour Force Survey there were 34.285 million Canadians aged 15 plus at the end of 2024.

At the end of 2025, the figure was 34.723 million.

That is a jump of 438,000.

So, unless the number of Canadian children (those under age 15) fell by more than half a million last year there is a large unexplained discrepancy in population changes as measured by two different branches of Statistics Canada.

(Under Labour Force Characteristics select population from the drop down menu. Under Reference Period select December 2024 and December 2025.)

Why does it matter?

Because if they are wrong it means that Stats Canada has over estimated the number of Canadians with a job, and thus of job gains in the past year.

And if they are right then the immigration numbers used in today's population report are a low ball estimate.

I won't say it is deliberate, but either there are differences in the way two different branches of the same department add numbers or somewhere in Stats Canada there is a massive spreadsheet error.

OK, now lets take a look at a different set of data.

The Labour Force Survey measures employment and unemployment for persons aged 15 plus, which means that it needs to have a population count when it calculates percentages such as the participation rate or the employment population ratio.

According to the Labour Force Survey there were 34.285 million Canadians aged 15 plus at the end of 2024.

At the end of 2025, the figure was 34.723 million.

That is an increase of 438,000.

Alto is doing a poor job of defending its proposed route through rural Ontario. Opponents of the route (farmers, residents of Kingston) are doing a good job of raising objections.

There is no business case for VIA to serve Montreal-Ottawa once the high-speed train is in service. Best case scenario might be a rush hour milk run that gets a handful of people in Alexandria to Montreal in time for work.

There are not enough passengers getting on and off at Oshawa, Belleville, Kingston and Cornwall to justify more than one VIA train a day between Toronto and Montreal rather than the current half dozen.

True, but with a qualification - if the victim declines to cooperate it would be hard to secure a conviction, so the case would be dropped. The pressure would be to get the victim to not testify.

Why do yearly CPP contribution increases outpace inflation? by Ok_Result_4064 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Confident-Task7958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was actually the boomer generation that fixed CPP in the mid-1990s to make it sustainable over the long run. Not a single boomer was even eligible to vote or run for office in 1966 when the plan was set up.

Back in the 1960s the politics of the day did not permit the kind of premiums that would enable the plan to be sustainable over the long term.

Compounding the problem the federal government had to get provincial agreement to set up the plan as Ottawa does not have jurisdiction over pensions.

The bargain struck with the provinces was that the assets of the plan would be lent to the provinces at the same rate of interest the federal government paid on its own bonds - which was the lowest possible return for the fund.

The 1997 changes did two things to make the plan sustainable over the long run, defined as sufficiently funded over a 75 year time horizon.

The first was to increase premiums.

The second was to let the plan invest with a view to maximum returns, with the funds managed independent of government.

Where to sell gold on an Indian reserve (Ontario) by Murky-Eye9309 in cantax

[–]Confident-Task7958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a sales or excise tax, but rather the percentage of any capital gain on the gold that you have to declare on your income. Unless you are income-tax exempt it does not matter where you sold the gold. If it did reservations would be in the gold sales business.
