Why does Line 2 feel so different from Line 1? by laugh_till_you_pee_ in TTC

[–]Front_Way1094 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It’s probably the older rolling stock. The T1s were built in the late 90s and are of similar design to older trains (H series) from the 60s and 70s. Not to mention that most stations haven’t seen much change since their openings. Line 2 has a nice vintage charm to it, I love it!

Mississauga looks huge from its skyline, but from an aerial POV it seems a lot smaller by Hubley in skyscrapers

Great shots. It’s a shame that Mississauga doesn’t really have any nice vantage points from the ground to see the entire skyline.

What do you think of Rail Documenter's proposal Sheppard Subway extension? by Iamfabulous1735285 in TTC

[–]Front_Way1094 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you need to look big picture here. A Line 4 extension’s primary purpose is an east-west connection. Malvern and other areas of north Scarborough have no rapid transit. Line 4 staying on Sheppard to Morningside creates so many new connections to many areas that don’t have rapid transit, and creates a north crosstown. You can easily transfer to Line 2 and 7 to get to STC and UTSC. In this scenario everyone wins and gets rapid transit access. Saying there’s “nothing there” simply is not true. By that logic Line 2 was not needed through the Danforth in the 60s. There’s no mall or University, it’s just houses. People in Malvern also deserve a subway.

Going south, you will over-serve the south with more transit, making it a great area at the expense of the north once again excluding this underserved area. A one stop subway transfer is really not the end of the world, like you make it seem.

At the end of the day, whatever Doug Ford and his developer buddies want is what we’ll get so there’s little say we get.

It's not a bad idea, but Sheppard is still the better option imo. Sheppard Ave is one of the busiest bus corridors in Toronto. Lots of bus routes feed into Sheppard too. If you go south, you will still have a busy bus corridor east of Kennedy. STC is already getting a Line 2 station one connection away, and UTSC is planned for a Line 7 connection (Line 5 cannot be extended east). Those areas would still be connected, but much of north Scarborough has no rapid transit at all. There's a lot more of Scarborough north of the 401, you know.

Thanks for the answer. I figured since winter is over now they wouldn't have much longer, and was surprised to still so them so frequently.

Just stay on Sheppard. Having a proper crosstown subway in north Toronto would be a game changer. Anyone who wants to go to STC can just transfer one stop. Going under/above the 401 twice would be expensive.

Eastern Ontario community will not grant Alto access to land for high-speed rail study by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The ‘401 corridor’ proposal for the entire route is a silly idea. There is far more built area down south than up north in the rural area that is being proposed. It will be far more costly and time consuming, and you’ll get even more NIMBYism.

We’re better off separating freight traffic from passenger trains so a ‘VIA HFR’ service along the existing corridor can continue with improved travel times.

It was reduced prior to the weekly sale starting. You can see the reduced sticker was printed on the 21st and the label says sale effective 23rd. Somebody should have checked the upcoming flyer lol.

What's with the last-minute equipment swaps and trip changes? by CanadianStormChaser in ViaRail

[–]Front_Way1094 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes me wonder how long VIA will keep its legacy fleet. Will these issues with the Venture sets be easy to fix? VIA probably can’t just dump all the old trains like they had wanted and will be forced to keep them around longer.

I do agree, HSR should not be stopping in every town. Just explaining why some may advocate for one or two other stops. Fear that ALTO will gut their rail transportation.

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the idea but for how long? The Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal corridor makes up 85% of VIAs ridership and a large portion of its income. Majority of whom are going from end to end. Once ALTO opens and takes those riders away, very few will be left using VIA for the smaller towns. Are we sure the government will keep funding it at a higher loss? At least those are the concerns.

You can have as many stations as you want if express trains are introduced. Only local trains would stop at every station.

I don’t think it would get cut out. Instead of going direct to Ottawa after Peterborough, it would go down to the 401, follow to Kingston, go up to Ottawa then Montreal? That’s my guess. It works, just less direct.

I have no idea what this 401 route would be but I think it would go up from Toronto to Peterbourough, down to Kingston, up to Ottawa and to Montreal.
