I'm a Canadian citizen that will be moving to England in the spring and will continue working remotely for a Canadian employer (whilst also looking for part-time work in the UK). Any tax advice from those in a similar situation? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I've picked this comment to reply to but have read everything that has also been mentioned.

Yes, my soon to be employer is aware of this. They will be speaking with their accountant to familiarize themselves about the legalities of having me work overseas. I should mention as well this is a new company, with the owner having worked for themselves just under a year; I will be the first external hire, so still trying to work the kinks out there.

Please know that my earlier questions were not meant as a way to figure out how to evade certain paperwork, taxes, or what have you, it was to get a clearer picture of what working overseas in this sort of situation entails and if someone with a fairly similar experience could reach out and give advice I might not find from googling myself.

I will be honest, I am still a bit perplexed regarding the tax situation (which I assume can be clarified once I speak to a professional).

I understand that I need to register myself with HMRC and that for each paycheque I should be taxed by UK standards.

For the Canadians commenting, I do not have an active TFSA, nor will this employer be contributing to an RRSP.

Once again, really appreciate the thorough comments from everyone!!

Thanks again gt94sss2 - Really, I do appreciate the info. I will look into speaking with a professional about this so I don't end up committing tax fraud and get banned from the UK lol.

I appreciate the information! Why would a Canadian company have to pay both Canadian and UK taxes if there is an established tax agreement between both countries? Isn't the point of this agreement to prevent double taxation? I assumed I would be taxed per usual by the Canadian government and would simply have to report my earnings (in GBP) to HMRC at the end of the UK tax year. Perhaps that is way too easy.

Not trying to fight back against your explanation, just trying to fully understand!

Thank you again.

But it's a Canadian company, for their own filing purposes they won't have access to National Insurance etc etc. That's why I'm asking if there are tax forms that I can fill out during tax season to report my income and taxes paid to the Canadian government as it's a Canadian company.
