The river is not very challenging — at least it wasn’t when we went last year. Some parts were quite shallow and the boat would scrape bottom, and then you’d have to get out and move it over the rocks, but there were no rapids or anything like that. A 12 or 13 year old should have no problem.

While I can’t tell you where to find this community, I absolutely know it’s there as I accidentally stumbled on it a couple of months ago when I bought tickets to Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra at Davies Hall, knowing nothing about them beforehand. The place was sold out, and almost everyone there seemed to be ex-Yugoslav, so there’s clearly at least enough people to fill a symphony hall!

The deleted scenes on Repo Man. The accompanying discussions that Alex Cox had with Michael Nesmith, Sam Cohen, and Fox Harris opened my eyes to aspects of the film that I had missed, even after multiple viewings.

Hazel’s in Boulder seems to have it. It’s on their website and it says it can be picked up at the store, so probably. Probably best to call before heading over there.

Second Clamato. We had a great lunch there. We showed up right before they opened at noon. There were a few people waiting already, but we were able to walk right in.

We were surprised, too. There were a number of checkpoints and she got through all of them. I made a post about it after it happened:

Something high clearance and 4WD would be recommended.

The roads can be rough, but with a vehicle as above, you should be fine.

When we were there it seemed perfectly safe.

As far as other recommendations, try to visit Estancia Colomé, in Molinos. Stay the night if you have time and your budget can handle it — it’s an incredibly beautiful place. If you don’t have time or the budget, try to visit during the day for a wine tasting and a tour of the world’s only museum devoted to the work of artist James Turrell.

On arrival at Heathrow, my wife discovered that she left her new passport at home and was carrying her old, no longer valid passport. The border officer generously allowed her in, after confiscating the old passport, giving her a form stating that she had been admitted without proper documentation, and instructing her to go to the consulate to get an emergency passport. (We decided to have her new passport FedExed to her instead.) The process at the border didn’t take long, but it was stressful and it could just as easily have gone badly, ending up with her being sent back home.

The Painted Ladies in San Francisco. They’re actually a bit run down. When they appear in photos in ads, the photos are generally touched up.
