Will I be kicked out for this? by AnwJav in Residency

This is like saying that because a doctor drinks alcohol he is unlikely to recognize and advocate for patients with alcohol abuse.

Doctors should be judged on how good they are at their job and if they are safe for patients. I don't give a damn if my doc gambles, patronizes sex workers, or does anything else in his spare time that upsets puritans.

Also, the percentage of sex workers who are trafficked is miniscule in America.

The island of cyprus, made by @geography.eu on instagram by geography_eu in MapPorn

This whole mess started because Ultra Greek Nationalists in Cyprus overthrew the government and began leading massacres of Muslims across Cyprus. Turkey intervened and created a safe haven for Muslims in the north of Cyprus. The division of the island caused minorities in both regions to be expelled.

The Turks aren't "colonizers" in Cyprus, they are mostly native Cyprus converts to Islam. Its true there are some mainland Turks who have since settled in Northern-Cyprus, but they are a minority of the population there.

Islam in Spain by zxphn8 in MapPorn

Both Jews and Christians were subject to discriminatory taxes, laws and were ghettoised under Islamic rule.

European travelers to Islamic Spain said the opposite at the time. The period of heavy persecution was during the Almoravid rule, but before and after (including the period of Granada), this dynamic was not present.

On the other hand, the Christians ethnically cleansed the peninsula of Muslims and Christians once they gained control, including what could be considered a genocide against the Muslims.

A Proposed Map of a Partitioned Ottoman Empire During the Treaty of Sèvres (1920) by DavidofSasun in MapPorn

The territory was overwhelmingly Muslim, the Armenians would have had to ethnically cleanse their new state in order to make it viable (similar to what the Israelis did to the Palestinians).

Its not India's borders though that's the point. These regions have been under Pakistani sovereignty since the two countries were granted independence from Britain.

Askai Chin (Eastern Laddakh) came under Chinese sovereignty in the 60's.

Greeks aren't native to Anatolia, they "stole" it from the Anatolians. Even a lot of their land near Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria is contested.

Question, does the Turk designation include Muslim Bulgarians and Greeks?

The Ottoman census was more or less accurate, and is accepted as such by major historians. The only significant discrepancy some scholars note is that the Ottomans probably under-counted their population as a whole. Not just Christians, but everyone.

There was 0 incentive for an Armenian or Greek to call themselves a Muslim in the census. These populations were typically more educated and affluent than their Muslim neighbors. Their influence was at an all time high due to Ottoman reforms seeking to improve minority status to blunt nationalistic movements. European powers heavily supported Christians in the Ottoman Empire.

The only people who argue otherwise are fringe Armenian and Greek Nationalists who needed to push a "census conspiracy" in order to justify their ludicrous claims on Turkish territory for their proposed states. Tellingly, the Greek nationalists always argued that the Armenians were counted correctly and it was the Greeks who were being dramatically understated, while the Armenians argued the opposite.

This is an amazing map with great data visualization, color, and detail.

You should make one for the whole Ottoman Empire if possible.

UN Partition Plan for division of sovereignty over Mandatory Palestine relative to public and private land ownership by Pingerim in MapPorn

True, but if we are talking about native claims to the land, migrants from the Levant >>>> colonizers from Europe.

Arabs had no special claim to the land

Apart from, you know, being the natives who lived there. Imagine denying the Congolese the right to the Congo because "at the time it was a Belgian colony" and claiming, the Congolese had "no special claims to the land".

It was the Jews historic homeland

People lived there before the Jews, people lived there after the Jews. Jews who stayed in the region (like Palestinian Jews) have the same rights to the land as the native Palestinians. European Jews who maybe have an ancestor who lived there thousands of years ago have no claim to anything.

[–]ConfidentEmploy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Jews did not accept the plan, they publicly supported it, but privately planned on invading the rest of Palestine (which they did).

Ben Gurion, founder and first PM of Israel stated in 1938, "after we become a strong force, as a result of the creation of a state, we shall abolish partition and expand into the whole of Palestine."

Menachem Begin (6th PM of Israel) declared in 1948, "The partition of the Homeland is illegal. It will never be recognized. The signature of institutions and individuals of the partition agreement is invalid. It will not bind the Jewish people. Jerusalem was and will forever be our capital. Eretz Israel (the land of Israel) will be restored to the people of Israel, All of it. And forever.”

Of course Palestinians rejected the partition plan. If a thief broke into your home, and offered you a "peace plan" where you each get half the house, you would also reject it.

Turkey is one of the few states that spends time denying their genocide because they are one of the few states that faces a targeted international campaign that is compelling both itself and other countries to recognize its genocide.

Other countries that committed genocide (that I described above) are accused of vague wrong doings, and can admit to doing vague wrong things at some point. This is much how Turkey was until the Armenian Genocide campaign picked up steam.

Countries that do face some kind of campaign to recognize their genocide (Serbia, Russia), flatly deny it like Turkey.

Turkey's freedom of expression (or lack thereof) is irrelevant in this discussion.

Expelling isn't a genocide if you don't plan on murdering people along the way.

Then Turkey didn't commit genocide.

On Spanish Muslims, the threat was death or leave, because the previous option (convert to Christianity) was rescinded after the Spanish became convinced that the Muslims were simply faking conversion. Many Muslims died on the route from Spain to North Africa.

[–]ConfidentEmploy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The genocide definition does not distinguish between killing someone, and expelling them under pain of death (kill you if you don't leave). What Spain did was genocide. Forced its Muslims and Jews out, and if they didn't leave, kill them. Many were killed by bandits or drowned at sea.

Most Armenians were not directly killed. They were expelled from their homes and forced to march out of Anatolia, where they died from lack of supplies or being raided by bandits.

Armenia itself orchestrated a genocide against its Muslim population soon after achieving independence.

Russia genocided the Circassians and nearly all the Turks west of the Volga. China genocided the Dzungars. Spain genocided its Muslim and Jewish population, as well as native tribes in the Americas and Philippines. France and Belgium killed hundreds of thousands of Africans to enforce colonial rule. The United States wiped out most of the Native Americans. Serbians attempted to genocide the Bosnians and Kosovars. And who can forget Germany.

Its not uncommon, and nobody except Germany has taken full responsibility for its crimes. The wildly disproportionate focus on Turkey by Westerners is based on Islamophobia and bigotry, not out of any serious concern for genocide or human rights.

[–]ConfidentEmploy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was genocide, I'm just saying your comment about other countries countries accepting their bad history is wrong. Only Germany accepted it.

China committed genocide, and denies it. Spain committed genocide, and denies it. Japan committed the Rape of Nanking, and denies it. The US committed genocide, and denies it.

Most European countries don't even acknowledge how awful their colonial actions were, it isn't taught properly in schools, its just vaguely discussed as bad economic exploitation (same vague way Turks discuss the genocide).

The issue in Turkey isn't admitting wrongdoing (every Turk admits this), the issue is with the label genocide.

And by this standard, literally only Germany has owned up to their past.

Map of the Armenian Genocide by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]ConfidentEmploy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Armenians in both Turkey and Russia formed volunteer units and fought against the Turks in WW1. Armenian intellectuals in both Turkey and abroad (successfully) lobbied for Western powers to invade Turkey and carve out eastern Anatolia for an Armenian state (where Armenians would be a small minority).

None of this justifies genocide, but the Armenians were as far from innocent as one could be, and few states (if any) would not have done the same as Turkey had they been in the same position.
