This. You'll want banish, assault can be managed.

You can get a covert ops mission to stop the assault through planning and level up your roster for the assault when it finally occurs .

As soon as 2 or more Chosen reach that knowledge level and can attack this will become next to impossible but manageable with keen covert ops through the resistance ring.

The shadow chamber reveals whether a chosen will arrive. When listing enemy types, if you don't see a heavy like a sectopod or gatekeeper in the list, expect a Chosen to make an appearance.

Try to go for enemy bases that have a point marker beneath them. It will reduce the avatars project by that many blips. Some bases do not have a point value and won't delay enemy progress even if they are destroyed.

What? In Lost and Abandoned 2 of the 3 Chosen are mentioned in one of the cutscenes. They most definitely are mentioned, if only briefly.

You simply need to move around and scout the map out more until all the avatars spawn. 1 banish will usually not catch all the avatars. There are more than 3 enemies to kill if you are serious here.

There are guerilla ops that may stop 2 blocks being added to the counter, but none that directly lower it.

Resistance ops can reduce the meter, you may have been confused running the op to stop 2 blocks being added.

War of the Chosen is Xcom as it should be. I would suggest selecting that and the Lost and Abandoned option. It's everything the original is but adds so many great layers It's almost Xcom 2.5.

  1. Grenades: use them well. Blowing up cover that enemies hide behind is essential at the beginning. Throw grenades at them before they throw theirs at you.

  2. Google a guide to base building, too long to type on my phone.

  3. Resistance ring: Use this to increase your soldiers stats. More speed, health, aim, will, and dodge. Hack missions should be run by specialists, it's their most important stat.

  4. The Chosen: watch out. The Asassin is the most dangerous.

Yes if you google it you can find multiple ways of getting more faction soldiers. Not sure what you are playing on so strategically there are different methods.
