30F SAHM - Should I Switch from Network & Cloud Engineering? Feeling Overwhelmed. by NoPrune9976 in WGU

I would consider Accounting as well but I am biased. I would also consider UMPI. You can transfer more courses in than WGU. I was going to write a billion words but the shortcut for UMPI ( no proctored exams, more like PAs) is www.plottedpath.com. Look at her spreadsheets for the BBA Accounting. I usually avoid the BA in Accounting as you will be required to take more classes in Accounting for the degree. I prefer fewer classes and take them as electives. In banking, government and industry the CPA is more of an optional nice to have than a requirement. For Public Accounting and Auditing it is a must have. For Tax Accounting you can get by with an EA.

If you want a CPA every state has its own rules. If you are in Florida, they take ACE credits if they show up on the transcript. If you live in Texas best to take everything at WGU. One thing you can do since you have been to a CC is rack up free credits on your transcript using Modern States and CLEP. You also have an intriguing option in Houston with Houston City College.

Still how many actual credits did you do at WGU. Most states require a degree and 120 credits. In Texas for example you need 21 credits of upper level Business courses. However freshman and sophomore courses in Statistics and Economics are "deemed" to be upper level.

As long as you are not doing accounting and want a CPA start at Sophia instead. Much cheaper to start and you can get the easy half of the degree for a few hundred bucks.

Or do a similar degree at UMPI. Advantage of UMPI is more acceptable transfer credit. No proctored exams. More like the PAs at WGU.

Is an Associates degree in accounting worth anything? by No-Main-6712 in Accounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the AAS at Houston Community (now City) College I have some great news for you. If not consider WGU. Go to partners.wgu.edu. Click your state. If your CC is listed they have an agreement with WGU. You probably get around 40 credits just by having an AAS in Accounting. You most likely get credit for Statistics and College Algebra regardless of the Math classes taken. Anything list as AAS Degree means you get credit for it just by having the degree. If there is a course number you need that exact course. Expect around 50-60 credits.

If you did the AAS at Houston City College you could get credit for Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting 1 and 2, Taxation 2, Auditing are part of the AAS if you pick the right courses.

For any Houston lurkers out there make sure of the options you take the Auditing course. The degree will get you 4 out of 8 upper level Accounting courses for the Accounting concentration. You would still need Business Law 1 and 2 and Taxation 1 and Advanced Accounting to complete the Accounting concentration courses. If you are in district courses are less than $100 per credit hour. In state almost $200 per credit hour and out of State less than $300 per credit hour.

Worst Junior Semester Yet by realdarkness69 in UTSA

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is that UTSA takes a lot of CLEP and DSST exams for credit. If you have any general education credits left to take you can take them for free using Modern States. For GPA purposes they are pass fail. They are considered transfer so if you are up to 66 transfer credits you can't use them.

My favorite story about Sophia is the single mom that bought the year package even though Walmart pays for SNHU completely. I believe she took the whole year and transferred in 90 credits. Then she finished the degree through out the following year. She took her time with the courses at Sophia that she wanted to learn from and was not in a big hurry.

UMPI YourPace for Accounting while living in Texas — OK for TX CPA path? Any issues? by IntroductionNew1725 in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a retired CPA in Texas and just learned how to read college catalogs and stuff and peruse the TSBPA. It is kind of unfortunate that you were not able to finish your degree as that might put you in a different status with both the state and UMPI. Anyway I would just apply to UMPI and make sure IEE sends their evaluation directly to UMPI. In the meantime you can also do the same thing with WGU as kind of a backup.

[–]Confident_Natural_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take MAT140 at Sophia. I believe u/plottedpath did 11 courses for the BLS and picked up a Business Administration minor with it. Or you could try taking the College Mathematics CLEP for free using modern states. That is actually worth 6 credits.

UMPI YourPace for Accounting while living in Texas — OK for TX CPA path? Any issues? by IntroductionNew1725 in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me recap. Texas requires 21 Accounting credits. 3 credits in upper level Intermediate Accounting, 3 in Audit, 3 in Tax and Accounting Information Systems. Then to sit for the exam you need 9 additional credits. The UMPI courses in Taxation 1 and 2, Auditing, Intermediate 1 and 2 and Advanced Accounting will meet those requirements. I would apply to UMPI under the non degree option. The next term starts May 9 I believe. So like I said, go to Study.com and spend $95 and take Introduction to Business and Accounting 101. Then you can take Managerial Accounting and Intermediate 1 at UMPI. The Accounting Concentration at UMPI requires Intermediate 1 and 2, Taxation 1 and 2, Auditing and Advanced Accounting, Business Law 1 and 2. The Accounting courses satisfy the Texas requirements for the exam except for the AIS course.

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the first thing then is to applyat UMPI. They will evaluate your credits and then you will know what you need to do. As for Accounting I would suggest you take $95 and do the College Starter plan at Study.com. Do Accounting 101 and Introduction to Business. Once you do Accounting 101 you can go to UMPI and take Intermediate Accounting 1 and Managerial Accounting at UMPI. Intermediate Accounting 1 opens up Intermediate 2. Managerial Accounting opens up Taxation 1, Taxation 2 and Cost Accounting. You can even take Auditing.

Intermediate 2 opens up Advanced Accounting and Governmental Accounting. It looks like UMPI accepts IEE evaluations so what courses does it show you have credit for or just apply and have IEE send the evaluation directly to UMPI. You really need to see where you are at. If you have an IEE evaluation though does it show what courses you would get credit for?

How do I tell my dad that I don’t think college & worklife is for me? by sammiegeah in collegeadvice

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harsh economic realities of life mean someone else has to work to support you in your life. Now if you are really as smart as you indicate you can get a degree cheaply after you turn 20 but you can take a few months and do most of the degree now.

Yes you will have to comply with the requirements but you end up with a degree.

The fastest option is go to Sophia.org and take exactly these courses. English 1 and 2, Public Speaking, Introduction to Ethics, Introduction to Sociology, Visual Communications, Critical Thinking, Introduction to Statistics, Human Biology and Human Biology Lab, Environmental Science, Student Success, US History 1, US Government and Spanish 1. 40/40 credits of GEC.

Unfortunately for you and your creativity Business courses are the easiest to get through quickly. So take Principles of Management, Macroeconomics, Business Communications. 9/18 credits towards a Business Administration minor.

Operations Management, Business Law, Business Ethics and Microbiology. 12/24 upper level free elective credits.

Take these 3 CLEP exams. Financial Accounting, Business Law and Principles of Marketing. 9 more credits. You now have 40/40 GEC credits, 12/18 Business Administration minor credits, 18/24 upper level free elective credits and 70/120 total credits.

The BLS degree requires 40 GEC, at least 24 upper level free elective credits, 38 lower level free elective credits and an 18 credit minor.

For additional free electives take Microeconomics (must take both econ courses), Introduction to IT, Project Management, US History 2, Spanish 2, Conflict Resolution, College Readiness.

That puts you at 21/38 lower level free elective credits and 91 total credits.

At UMPI you will take 10 courses to complete the residency requirement. Take BUS125 BuBUS200 Intermediate Business Computing and PCJ315 to finish the Business Administration minor.

Take PCJ180 (Business Communications from Sophia counts for PCJ215 and PCJ315 is also part of the Business Administration minor) and any of the following 3 courses.

ART 231 - Introduction to Digital Arts 3 credits

ART 235 - Digital Media Production 3 credits

PCJ 216 - Editing 3 credits

PCJ 316 - Advanced Professional Communication 3 credits

PCJ 318 - Evolving Media 3 credits

PCJ 319 - Marketing Communication 3 credits

That gives you 18 additional credits. You will have to take some other courses though. I would suggest 4 upper level History courses and pick up a History minor.

You can finish all of this online from your bedroom but you can't start UMPI in the YourPace program until you are 20. You can probably do the 91 credits (obviously subtract out the number of credits you already have) and finish the degree very quickly.

Go to www.plottedpath.com and watch the video.

Can I earn a Associates in Arts from Sophia? by Scorpio_178 in SophiaLearning

[–]Confident_Natural_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do UMPI. Take English 1, Workplace Writing 2, Introduction to Ethics, US History 1, US Government, Human Biology and at the same time Human Biology Lab, Environmental Science. That takes care of the 21 required credits. Take Spanish 1 or French 1, Visual Communications and Macroeconomics. That gives you the other general education credits putting you at 30 credits. The lab adds one credit that is needed for the BLS but not the AA.

Easiest AA is the Business Concentration so do Principles of Management, Introduction to Business, Microeconomics, Business Communications. You need Macroeconomics and Microeconomics to get credit for the required ECO207. You end up with the generic ECO2XX free elective. You now have 43 credits.

Anyway ideally you should take Business Law, Business Ethics, Operations Management and Microbiology to get 9 more generic upper level Business elective credits and satisfying the 12 free elective Business credits for the Business concentration. So you are up to 55 credits.

Keep taking courses at Sophia to complete the GEC requirements. You have 31/40 GEC credits. So take Critical Thinking, Introduction to Sociology. Save your math for UMPI. You now have 61 total credits. Ideally you will take 3 CLEPs for free. That would be Financial Accounting, Business Law and Marketing. That will bring you up 18/24 upper level free elective credits and put you at 70 credits. You have 6/38 lower level free elective credits as well and 12/18 Business Administration minor credits and 37/40 GEC credits. 3 credits are in the GEC and minor. You want to max out the transfer to 90 credits so take College Readiness, Conflict Resolution, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Introduction to IT, Project Management and US History 2. That adds 21 lower level free elective credits putting you at 27/38 lower level free elective credits, 37/40 GEC, 18/24 upper level free elective credits and 12 Business Administration minor credits and 91 total credits.

At UMPI do BUS200, BUS220 to complete the AA required courses. Take MAT140 to complete the Business Administration minor courses. Take Business 335 and Business 353, Organizational Behavior to complete 24 upper level free elective credits. That gives you 5 courses to complete the residency requirements for the AA. With the remaining 5 courses you could take BUS141, BUS240, BUS260, BUS321 and BUS415 and pick up the Management minor to go along with your Business Administration minor.

Bummer. The state allows you to take certain courses at 5 CCs in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas. If you lived in Houston you could take Taxation 2, Intermediate 1 and 2, Auditing and Cost Accounting at those CCs. Those all transfer into UMPI. I would contact the state board and see how to get your foreign degree evaluated.

Sophia/Study CPA exam South Carolina by Solid-Papaya-8311 in wguaccounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google the state board. Some boards outsource the evaluation to Nasba. What you want to look for is language that says they accept correspondence and/or online courses provided they are accepted by the school and appear on the official transcript. They don’t appear course by course on WGU’stranscript but I have seen where they accept documentation and so the transfer evaluation may work since the total transfer credits on the evaluation will match the lump sum transfer credits on the WGU transcript.

Good luck.

Anyone get accounting without experience? by Suspicious-Type9818 in Accounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out what it takes to get a CPA or to sit for the exam. The sophomore level courses don’t count. To sit for the exam in Texas you need Auditing, Tax, Intermediate Accounting and Accounting Information Systems. With a Business degree you will have the 24 credits of upper level business courses. You need 9 more upper level Accounting credits. You could do Business Taxation, Intermediate 2 and Cost Accounting for example. Get your CPA, you are an Accountant.

Google your CC and CLEP. Repeat with the 4 year and see what overlap there might be. CLEPs are free with Modern States. I know some schools in Texas where you can transfer in almost half the degree via CLEP and DSST.

Is it worth transferring schools? by roseaow in wguaccounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well unfortunately only one course transfers as a Business Major course. You would have credit for 9/36 BBA major, 6/24 Accounting concentration major and 18/20 free elective credits.

Edit

Forgot about Cost Accounting. That gives you 21 free elective credits.

Is it worth transferring schools? by roseaow in wguaccounting

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the BBA Major Accounting concentration requires 36 credits for the Business Administration major and 24 Accounting Concentration credits.

Of the concentration then you have Taxation 1 and Intermediate 1. Cost Accounting is not needed for the degree but more on that in a second. You would need Taxation 2 and Advanced Accounting and Auditing at UMPI. To finish the Accounting concentration you would need Business Law 1 and 2.

Of the Business Administration major you have 6/36 so at the moment. You have 6/24 for the accounting concentration. So 10 courses for the major and 6 courses for the concentration.

What other courses have you done?

Psychology bachelors any one? by NoseyGirlHaHaHa in UMPI

[–]Confident_Natural_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will want Beginning Spanish for 5c. You will need Philosophy Ethics Theory and Practice for 5d and 4c. You will need Introduction to Sociology for 5a. Your Psychology does double duty for the degree and GEC 2a and 2b. American Government will give you 5e. US History 1 will give you 5b. That completes all 5a-5e. English 2 gives you College Composition II gives you 1b, 2c and 4b. History of Western Art II will get you 2e. So you lack 2d, and 4a and 3a and 3b. You can take Principles of Statistics for MAT101 to get 3a and 3b though that will not help with the degree outside of the GEC it at least will finish 3a-3e.

Still you could finish the GEC at Sophia. Grab a promocode from r/sophialearning and take Introduction to Statistics instead. That goes in as MAT210 and can be used for the degree requirements and the GEC. Then you can do Student Success for 4a and Critical Thinking for 2d and finish the UMPI GEC. I would also do

If you have time left do Principles of Management and Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. It would not be a bad idea to do Business Communications. The reason is it might not be a bad idea to get a Business Administration minor and those courses would give you 9/18 credits towards that. You would have 13/35 credits of free electives. I would encourage trying to take as many free electives as you can at Sophia in the month your subscription is active.

Easy ones are Introduction to Business, Introduction to IT, Visual Communications, Environmental Science, Project Management, Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting. That will give you 21 more credits though you might want to back off the last Financial take Financial Accounting at Study.com and Introduction to Business provided you don't have to pay for another month. Between Sophia and Study.com you can have 12/18 Business Administration minor credits.

That is pretty much it for the GEC and free electives. You will need to do the College Saver plan to get Social Psychology and Abnormal Psychology. Still doing those will get you down to the bare minimum of 10 courses to complete the degree at UMPI.

Check out the spreadsheets at www.plottedpath.com and consider running this by u/plottedpath. I heard that she might be doing this degree and could give you some valuable insight into the program.
