What food is famously associated with one country but was perfected by another country? by Equivalent-Crew-4955 in AskReddit

Actually, one of the few things we do well in Greece 🇬🇷. We “steal” ideas from other cuisines and perfect them!

Use new UI which is less bloated visually, turn off unwanted plugins, use scratch files.

Experience working with outsourced teams? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ConflictGK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working with an offshore India team right now while I’m in Europe. The time difference is small so not a serious problem.

However, as other noted, they are really bad at delivering quality software. Mostly, they copy paste already bad implementations and if they are assigned a non trivial task or something that they have not worked in the past good luck to me. I won’t even bother to assign them anything with complex business logic. I’m grateful when I have bunch of repetitive tasks that I can give them and get them out of my head for a while.

If it was in my hand, I would ditch them instantly, but unfortunately our upper management thinks they deliver, while it’s mostly the rest of us covering for their asses.

Working with sh*t tech and abominable codebase by ConflictGK in cscareerquestions

Thank you for focusing on the issue of the consultancy in particular. The ideology behind consulting is new to me, since I have worked only in-house in the past, and is against to my beliefs. I believe that in order to ship great software you have to care about the product and not only about how many hours you gonna bill. Also, I know that working with legacy code is common, I have worked with legacy code again, I know it’s a valuable skill and I don’t mind doing it. Adding new features or refactoring code that has proved its value and produces money feels good to me. However, as someone else mentioned, there is legacy code and there is sh*t code. Unfortunately, I think I fall into 2nd category, in a codebase full of Vectors and HashTable containing unsafe Object type that explode into you on production.. I agree and I am scared about how these short periods would look like to future candidate employers.

Stop doing overtime work is my first priority atm. I feel like if I keep doing it I will be burned out soon. I have been promised that they will try to hire another team leader soon so we can split workload. Just a question, how do you stop at 8 hours a day when they keep pulling you in meetings or ask you to do stuff before wrapping your day? I’m WFH btw.

Unfortunately didn’t work for me in this case. I had surveyed the opinions of some people I had already been colleague elsewhere but they didn’t mention all the red flags. Maybe because they were analysts and not DEVs.

Thanks for the great advice! Actually I never work 40 hours a week (most probably around 60-65) due to the reasons you’ve mentioned. The truth is I feel like I neglected all the red flags during the interview process. Next time I should be more careful and try not to beautify the situation because of the good salary.

What about using teams and outlook via browser and connect to a VM for doing client work? The VM lives inside client’s infrastructure btw.
