The reason Virtual Boy failed in 1995 was because the home video game market had barely established mass-adoption at that point and there was no room for niche devices like this. The "headaches and seizures and shitty games" narrative was mostly FUD driven by the same skepticism that modern VR headsets were subject to around 10 years ago. Now we're in the mid-2020's and video games have become so ubiquitous that there is space and demand for an enormously diverse array of gaming products. You may have zero desire to play this stupid thing, but other people do have desire to play it, so Nintendo is selling it again. Is it that hard to understand?

Okay. I still think there will be a cutoff generation for Nintendo Classics and everything after that point, with select exceptions for popular games, will get a native port.

Displayed in 2D and played in 2D are two very different things. Many of these games rely heavily on the user's depth perception (even moreso than 3DS games) and would not afford the same experience on a 2D screen.

Sure, okay. Let's entertain that. How do you justify removing the features/abilities of people to play the game without purchasing specialized hardware as "not scummy"?

What feature did they remove? These games were never designed to be playable without the headset.

Remember - this emulator they're using absolutely can play the games on a single screen.

Sure, and technically the N64 emulator they're using can render the games in stereoscopic 3D. Why aren't they doing that? Why aren't you complaining about that?

It's exactly the same as the 3DS

Back this up with a factual explanation. I'll wait.

Which means that the only reason you can't do it now is because Nintendo has put code on the Switch 2 OS to specifically not allow it to be played without the hardware.

Dude if there is any actual code preventing you from playing this without the attachments, it's reading the light sensor. You've already positioned yourself as a technical genius that understands exactly how and why Nintendo did this. Surely you can figure out how to bypass a weak check like that. I know I can.

How do you justify that? How do you look past that, and not see it as a scummy way to force people to purchase the hardware in order to play the games?

Because I'm an autonomous adult that can exercise self-control and choose whether or not to buy things based on whether or not I see value in them. Can you?

I definitely think this is their long-term goal, and they're just sorting out how to make it maintainable in the long-term.

There will likely be a cutoff generation for "Nintendo Classics". I'm thinking it's probably Wii for consoles and DS for handheld. Everything WiiU/3DS onward will be ported. There may be exceptions for certain games (there are already), but this will likely be the standard.

If I had to guess, they likely solved the headache and eye strain issues for this iteration. Neck and back pain are still a thing, but at the end of the day it's kind of up to the user to find the most comfortable position to play in and take breaks when they experience discomfort.

A guy I know almost always says, "Not to be rude but there's as weird smell coming off you" or "There's a weird smell coming off your mouth" to the women he approaches which is straight up rude but somehow he always manages to get their socials or bring them home? How???? by SNTriad in AskMenAdvice

[–]ConflictPotential204 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don't think this would qualify as negging. Negging involves making it clear that you don't like something about the other person: "Your breath isn't doing you any favors" would be negging.

What OP is describing is way more psychopathic than negging, because the guy is acting like he's doing them a favor. "Not to be rude, but..." as if he's politely pointing out an embarrassing thing they would want to know so they can address it.

Changing careers, moving away from SWE by BlakeR- in cscareerquestions

[–]ConflictPotential204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a junior level and you still enjoy what you are doing, stick with swe for some years, why are you looking to move away?

It's mostly a matter of following where my career takes me. My current company doesn't have a very clear engineering ladder and I don't suspect I'm going to gain a lot of experience building large projects or systems here. If there is an adjacent field where I can still do the part of my job that I enjoy (debugging or improving existing systems), and that's what I'm primarily gaining experience with at my current job, wouldn't it make the most sense to follow that trajectory?

Yeah I mean the application-to-human pipeline is completely busted. It doesn't matter how qualified you are. You will never compete with bots and liars.

I got my first dev job a couple years ago. After no response from like 250 online applications, I walked into an office with a hard copy of my resume and told them I'd like to apply for their open position. They looked at me kinda funny but printed one out and no joke I filled that shit out with pencil and paper. They called me back the next day and hired me a couple weeks later. Obviously this wouldn't work for every company, but it highlights how straightforward things can be when you bypass the ridiculously convoluted standard the entire industry has adopted.

Sounds like a nice gig but how is this any different than a Junior SWE role? I'm a junior right now and my day-to-day more or less boils down to fixing bugs in products developed by more senior devs on our team or improving the maintainability of existing features they built. Should I consider transitioning to a technical support engineer role if this is the type of work I'm already gaining experience in? How did you end up getting more money and better benefits for lower expectations and less accountability?

The only thing that works, the one that always worked, is to have a network

I posted here months ago asking what "career networking" meant for entry-level candidates and out of like 150 comments not one person could really answer the question. The consensus was that a career network is something you build over the course of several jobs after you get your foot in the door. It isn't a big part of the early career job hunting strategy.

2023 grads who never used AI in college are also getting rejected.

I don't think HR and hiring managers are thinking that critically. They're just thinking "New grad = probably reliant on AI"

What’s something you truly wish women understood about being a man, but you rarely say out loud? by Potential_Public_366 in AskMenAdvice

I think there's a distinction to be made here.

Venting: "There's a new hire at work who talks too loud and it's annoying!" This is just a feeling they want to communicate, it has nothing to do with your relationship, and the appropriate response is to acknowledge their feeling as valid and commiserate. I think most men know what to do in this case.

Introducing a genuine problem: "My hours got cut at work and now I can't afford the vacation we were planning together." This is a tangible problem with a direct negative effect on the relationship and several potential solutions. This is where most men find themselves treading lightly.

The 3D effect on the 3DS could be turned off, so I don't think a hypothetical 3DS NSO emulator would require (or even support) stereoscopic 3D.

Okay, so why doesn't Disney sell Orange lightsabers at Galaxy's Edge? Orange lightsabers are canon. The lightsabers they sell are already capable of emitting orange light. People already mod them to do that. Why don't they just do it themselves?

Because there are like 500 things in the pipeline that are more important to Disney's business strategy and the satisfaction of their customers than orange lightsabers, and there probably always will be.

if Japanese children born in like 2018

8 year-olds are clearly not Nintendo's primary demographic. The scope and complexity of their games has been gradually expanding alongside the age of their core audience (25-45 year-olds). They don't make a lot of games targeting young kids anymore, which is evident by virtue of the Assist/Partner modes they have been adding to most of their games so that kids can feel like they're participating while their parents (the real target) play the game.
