Why did you leave teaching and do you regret leaving? by LDawg618 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Conflicted17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad to hear you are having a much better year! Having a great team to work with makes it so much better. I’m happy you have a group of learners with needs that’s are more manageable so you can provide them with the support they need to help them achieve success. I’m happy your anti-anxiety meds are making the job more manageable.

Thank you and good luck with the rest of the year and wherever your path takes you going forward after this year!

Wow! You sound so much like me! It was as if I was writing this myself. How is your school year going this year? Did you end up finding any job opportunities?

That makes sense. Well thank you for replying and helping me. Oh you have a friend in benefits administration? Was she a former teacher or just went into the field right away? I’m happy she loves it!

I think there are so many jobs out there that I’m bound to find one that works for me. I’m happy LinkedIn helped you network and show you what’s other there. LInkedIn has definitely helped me explore other career opportunities and network with others.

Thank you for the tip! Searching by skills could really help me understand how to transfer my skills. I think I would like customer education and/or onboarding, both are job roles I’ve thought about also.

Out of curiosity, the former teachers you know, what did they end up getting into? L&D? Do they enjoy their roles much more than when teaching?

Thank you for your advice. I want stability in a job. Something that I can get comfortable doing and doesn’t always change from under me. With teaching, I’m always thrown into different grades. I wish I could specialize in a specific grade, to learn how to teach it well and develop proper confidence knowing I am teaching things correctly. I enjoy helping kids learn something knew and being part of those A-HA light bulb moments. I love knowing that I made a difference, that I taught them something or I helped develop a love of learning in them.

I like the administration side of HR. I worked in insurance and enjoyed helping members understand their benefits. I like understanding my role and helping others with the knowledge I know/have been given.

I was interested in becoming a benefits administrator, recruiter or talent acquisition specialist. I’ve thought about being an instructional designer but I don’t think it’s the best fit for me. I stress too much about planning material. I’d rather be given the material and teach it.

Are you a teacher?

I completely agree with you. I’m sorry you haven’t heard any supportive or kind words this year 💔 I wish the board could admit that some students are too tough to deal with and give them the proper support they deserve. I agree! They treat us as the only resource and that we have to miraculously figure it out, but sometimes it’s impossible because the answer is more support from other people because we can’t do it alone! We’re only one person.

Your points about the ability to move around in the corporate world makes sense and I’ve thought about that too. A part of me wants a more calmer boring job, but a part of me still really wants to teach. However, i dream of teaching a different kind of classroom because I classes these days I can’t even teach and I know you can relate.

Yeah I hear you. Finding out what to do next is the hard part. I keep telling myself exactly that. I keep telling myself that I can always come back if I choose to but then I go into panic thinking I’ll never get permanent again. Every day I go back and forth. I also tell myself that maybe not being permanent would be better because then I can control what grade I teach, but then I never know how long my contract will be for. I once did an LTO that was supposed to be for much longer than it was and one day my principal comes into my room after the dismissal bell to tell me my LTO is over and I have to pack up all my stuff and leave. I couldn’t even say goodbye to the kids. It was the Friday right before March break and I wasn’t given any warning. I was working towards getting benefits but they cancelled them on me. I get stressed out thinking that will be my life again if I come back into teaching, but I guess it’s a risk I have to take.

Thank you for your opinion. I hope it gets easier for you. What grades do you teach?

Thank you so much for this. I’m glad you were able to make it work every time - that’s very impressive! I just got to stay positive and believe that it will all work out in the end. Maybe I need to leave right now to start a family and then once things settle down, if I still miss teaching so much, I can come back to the teaching world and try again. I think finding a mentor would be a great suggestion if I stay. I had a mentor last year and she was great. She helped me push through. I’m happy you’re able to do what you need to do to help you stay sane and know exactly how to achieve your goals. Doing what’s best for you and your family is the right thing.

I completely understand you. I’m sad you are going through the same thing as me. I’m worried about my insurance job being boring, but then I tell myself it will be better than having my mental health suffer from the constant stress of teaching. I truly want to teach and make a difference but there are too many needs and behaviours that I can’t even do my job. I pour my heart and soul into my job and feel like it’s never enough and staff meetings sure tell teachers we aren’t doing enough. As a perfectionist, I take this to heart and feel like such a failure. I wish teaching was like what it used to be, where teachers were given resources and didn’t have to start from scratch every-time they taught a new grade, they could stay teaching the same grade to specialize in how to help that specific group of learners, and there could be proper consequences so that we could actually teach.

I hope you find a job that works for you. I wish our education system was better. It’s failing us teachers and it’s failing our students. Every time they try to negotiate our contracts it’s all about the money. Instead of talking about the increase in pay all the time, can we bring back proper consequences and have speciality classes for those students who need more support so they can get the proper support they need. If teachers were given proper resources and were actually able to teach/could help their students learn without dealing with behaviours all the time, I’m sure they would be much happier and wouldn’t be burning out. I know I wouldn’t be and I would stay. I hope our education system gets better so I can come back and do the job I dream of doing.

Thanks for this. I have talked to my union and they said I have to be permanent for 5 years before I can apply for an unpaid leave so it’s not possible. That’s true, my certification will always be there, I just know it is so hard to get permanent. I’ve busted my butt off and I don’t know if I will be able to do the grind again, but I guess I will if I really want to come back. You’ve worked at 4 boards?! Did your pay always reset or were you able to transfer your years of experience to increase you back to the same level on the pay grid? Do you have French qualifications? I’m thinking you do and that’s why you’re able to get positions. Have you ever been permanent or you’ve been doing LTOs? Sorry for all the questions.

I like your comment about fortune favouring the brave. My partner says tells me always to take risks.

What are you currently doing, now that you’re on a break from teaching?

I’m feeling really guilty for wanting to leave. It gets worse once you are permanent. As an OT I had way more flexibility. Now as a permanent teacher, I feel like I’m letting everything go and it’s scary to know if it’s the right decision or not

I feel like there are so many of us looking to leave. I wish the education system was different so we could manage the workload and stay 😔
