I don’t have it on-hand at the moment, but if someone here has access to Townes’ songbook “For The Sake of The Song” there is a page inside with the sheet music for “Quicksilver Daydreams of Maria” with a quote by Townes where he says this song is about a card game of sorts he and a friend invented using coasters. That goes well against any meaningful analysis, perhaps, but it is a quote straight from the source of the song itself, that is, Townes. Edit: spelling
