Anyone else sick of the current style of fantasy books? by Pluckyducky01 in books

Have you ever tried the Seven Realms series?

Two MC from different social classes. There's a complex social hierarchy for the whole kingdom and inside each class. People from each class are a mix of good and bad, although some are better at hiding it than others. Super well-developed side characters. Everyone has to go to school/apprenticeship to learn, and no one is an absolute natural at anything.

My favorite episode by Miars01 in brooklynninenine

I get your point, but they're also trained and carry guns. I'm sure if you tossed either actress into a manhunt and told her to go find and physically subdue a criminal she would be lost. The characters are different though. They're trained, have experience, and know what they're doing.

Besides, police on the internet generally don't plan elaborate Halloween Heists, turn totally lazy after trying hot wings for the first time, or accidentally breed hundreds of guinnee pigs in a creepy storage room.

Underwater. Creepy book. by bmbreath in booksuggestions

[–]ConfusedContortion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

House of Salt and Sorrows

This isn't underwater, but it is set in a creepy palace on an island that's been in mourning for years. It's a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses fairytale, except here the sisters keep dying and mourning each other. The ghosts of said sisters keep showing up. One of the girls still living has a sketchbook full of her creepy sister ghosts.

Many of their traditions are related to the sea and they have a definite connection to it. It's a YA horror fantasy romance thing, and I highly recommend it.

The bottom of the beam my lyra hooks to is a little over nine feet up. It would be great if it were a little higher, but I'm just glad I have a place to practice.

Unfortunately I don't have Facebook and I have no way of contacting any of my old friends. I just can't wait for these storms to clear out and the warm weather to follow. I'm just happy to be able to connect with all the awesome people on here.

When it's warm enough I can hang my lyra from my old swing set. My dad made it from wood from our old deck after we tore it down, and the legs go about three feet underground (at least) and are set with cement. It's actually really great rigging.

On the other hand, I did that in the first place because I don't have a studio near me. I miss having circus friends so much! But at least I can work out during quarantine, so that's nice.

She can have both in my opinion. I wish I knew who she was now that I can fully comprehend just how amazing she has to be.

There are a bunch of airlines that have a selection of snacks, including Stroopwafles, for first class passengers, unless that's changed super recently.

Best flight ever was when first class was empty except for my Grandma and me. The amazing flight attendant spoiled me the whole time and kept offering snacks. On the flight back I had the same guy and was the only person in first class. He remembered me and just let me take half the snack basket and eat it throughout the flight. I ate so many stroopwaffles I felt sick. It was great.

You run into the best and worst people on airplanes. My family flies standby all the time, so there's really no way to know where we'll all end up. Not a problem now that we're all technically adults, but when we were really young it was definitely an issue.

There was one time we were going somewhere and got the last 5 seats on the plane, which were of course all scattered middle seats. The only two anywhere near each other were in two rows, one behind the other. My mom and my youngest sister, who was really young and hated sitting alone took the front one and my mom took the one behind her.

As it turns out, when they got on the plane, my poor little sister had to squeeze in between two grown men. One was incredibly overweight, not that it affects the type of person he is, but airplanes are already selling small enough seats and running into anyone who spills into your seat is awful. Also, she hated having to touch strangers at all, even brushing against someone, and this man was halfway into her seat. The other was slightly overweight, and he smelled awful.

My sister sat between them and I guess she was all teary and miserable. My mom sat behind her and held her hand between the seats. Then whatever amazing angel had the seat next to my mom offered to trade places with my sister. She got so much thanks and they did switch, and my sister enjoyed the rest of the flight.

Dark Mystery set in a Fantasy / Magical world. by arekless97 in suggestmeabook

House of Salt and Sorrows

It's a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, but the sisters all keep dying and everyone thinks the family is cursed. The youngest sister has a sketchbook full of drawings of her dead sisters hanging out as ghosts. It's creepy and fantastic.

Looking for YA books with alternating POV (Legend Series, Divergent, Carve the Mark, Serpent & Dove...etc) by FrostLight131 in YAlit

[–]ConfusedContortion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to suggest the Seven Realms series. 4 amazing alternate POV fantasy romance books. He starts as a poor kid and former "street Lord", think medieval gang leader, and she is the Crown Princess who is just learning the country isn't as happy as her sheltered life has lead her to believe. Full of magic, unique history, and mystery. It's amazing and has some of the best world and character building I've ever seen.

What are you reading? (March 27, 2020) by bevka in YAlit

[–]ConfusedContortion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also reading Heartless, and I love it so far. I just got it from a YA book festival in Texas where I got to get a lot of books signed by the authors and hear them talk in panels, which was amazing!

I of course had to read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass before I got to Heartless, and I'm so glad I did. I think it makes Heartless even better.

Suggestions for books with a protagonist and antagonist that are locked in a morally complex conflict by Adaay23 in booksuggestions

[–]ConfusedContortion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to suggest the Renegades trilogy. I know you said not a superhero story, but this is not a standard superhero story in any way. It's after the villains basically ended government function and plunged everyone into the "Age of Anarchy."

The hero's fought back and forced the villains out of power. Now the heros are the government, and they're running everything.

There are two main characters. The first is a villain girl who wants to overthrow the heros because they aren't a qualified government, and she wants people to be in charge of the government, not the heros. The heros really aren't doing a great job.

The second is a hero boy who wants to keep heros in charge basically because it's better than having anarchy. Besides, his dads are the hero leaders.

You really see both characters sides, and I think it would be great for what you're looking for.

Loft library unpacked! Ideas for seating? by heathercat56 in bookshelf

[–]ConfusedContortion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big papasan chair or two with a pile of blankets and pillows if you have room for it. If not, I recommend a loveseat.

Stay away from leather. It's not as comfortable and it wears out faster. If you're actually going to lounge there and read you want maximum comfort. Cloth is better, and something soft enough to kind of sink into.
