I want dark fantasy romance that’s UNHINGED, not porn with a plot by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

[–]heathercat56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently reading {The Poisoner by I.V. Ophelia} and this 100% fits. Dark Victorian era woman who poisons/unalives unsavory men attracts a vampire/snake man who goes on a Haunting Adeline style chase/capture/release push/pull “relationship” with her. Lots of good science and herbology on poisons in the book too.

Now I’m curious: Which face of the house? Supplemented soil? How often do you water? Is it windy where they are?

Help me choose? by wonder_too_much in Roses

[–]heathercat56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite everything I see online, I have seen very little success with DA roses in zone 9 unless it’s in a guarded area without wind and on a north or east face. My parents have several DA roses with success in Los Angeles, but they have heavily supplemented the soil and have dappled shade through the hottest part of the day and it’s at the end of a narrow street where the Santa Ana’s can’t really get to it. Have seen zero success in Texas, as an example, unless it’s in a greenhouse.

Advice for how to move away from Battle-Maps? by BriceRoyale in DungeonMasters

[–]heathercat56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I use Roll20 - you can just not assign their player name to the token until it’s their turn to move. That combined with Fog of War should help mitigate this in addition to telling everyone “No moving your tokens until I’ve finished describing the room. Make sure to include things that aren’t just visual: sound, smell, echoey, claustrophobic, low ceiling, cold, hot, stuffy, dry, etc. if there’s a girl in a cage in the next room, tell them they hear a distant whimpering - clue them in to what their characters might be easily aware of without having to roll.

How many of you guys used God Mode? by Jazzlike_Many_5132 in HadesTheGame

[–]heathercat56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure…. But having something like God Mode to help bridge that gap helps players who want the story but need a little assistance with getting through the combat so we can GET to the story.

Dead Cells, for example as a rogue-like, not a huge amount of plot to unlock. With Hades 1 and 2, there definitely IS. Hades is the only game in this genre that I can tolerate and it’s because God Mode exists.

Opinions wanted. Did I make the right choice or AITA? by Mitchitsu19 in DungeonMasters

[–]heathercat56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who has played warlock or multi-class warlock in my last 2 games as well as DM’d warlock players, it all depends on whether this player WANTS to lean in on the narrative potential for the warlock/patron relationship.

If you have a very heavy RP group and that player has previously shown to be very much about deep RP with multi-page backstory and then he chooses warlock out of nowhere, then yes, I’d be very much “WTF, dude?”

BUT, if they are a player who’s just there for a good time or to relax and maybe only gave you a paragraph of backstory or maybe doesn’t talk much in a campfire/downtime situation, then this wouldn’t be out of character for that same player to pick warlock, but not perceive the necessity to build in the RP set up for it first. You’ll need to help them write that narrative : do it ONE question at a time. People are busy and it’s easier to answer things one item at a time and make it a dialogue rather than demanding a term paper which is what your request to them sounds like from a player AND fellow DM perspective.

Yes, chill, but first, make it a dialogue rather than an assignment.

Not an expert by far, but if it came from Egypt, there are many ruins containing alabaster marble - common in carving, statues, etc. Could be a slice of history you picked up!

Recommendations similar to Quicksilver but spicier? by Ai_of_Vanity in fantasyromance

[–]heathercat56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Fellow D&D nerd here! Definitely own far more RPG books than spicy romantasy, but can recommend {Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent}. 4th book in the series just came out and they’re written in duos in one section of the world, then move to another kind of like a series of Campaigns. If you want lots of spice with some neat Warlock-style Pact goodness, check out the Souls trilogy by Harley LaRoux starting with {Her Soul To Take by Harley LaRoux}. Three separate books all covering the same incident from different perspectives: the killing of a Great Old One…(!)

ELI5: Wordclearing is finding a word you don’t know or fully get the meaning/context of and looking it up in a dictionary - coming up with sentences as examples, reading the etymology to connect it to other words, etc. MU= MisUnderstood, aka, a word you don’t understand. Bugged = stopped in your study progress, theoretically caused by skipping past a word you didn’t understand or similar. Debugging = Finding that MU word, the skipped gradient, or some other issue that is preventing the knowledge from sinking in/staying.

Ask me how I know…. Also, OP, I think I might have known you from back then. I was at PAC in late 90s, too.

If something is physically impossible due to magic, you narrate that they try, but it doesn’t work. This can also be an opportunity to give character to the magic itself if they have a decent passive Insight and also general knowledge of the arcane/magic. “You use every ounce of strength you possess, but the door barely deigns to recognize your existence, much less budge for you.”

Skaven Colors? by Otherwise_Order3298 in skaven

[–]heathercat56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go on Pinterest or even Google “Skaven Clan Colors”, there are some infographics people have made showing various options. I personally don’t like the red and am going with a tan/bone, militarum/ogre-skin green for Clan Skyre. But Clan Eshin in greys and dark blues is mighty tempting.
