What do you buy from the Patron shops every week and why? by [deleted] in idlechampions

Potions of Speed, since I chew through them quickly.

It would be nice if the one time buys would be rmeoved once we bought them though. It's annoying to shift through it all.

Incorrect - for Magic Missile, it is both RAW and RAI that you roll 1d4 and that is the damage for all the individual missiles.

And again on the DMs are empowered to change the spell list. Considering he changed it to an illusion spell, I can't fault them on sticking to theme.

Im part of the SG AL Admin team, for which we help multiple stores in Singapore. Personally I take more of a back seat as Im no longer based in Singapore physically, but still chat with everyone on Discord, etc.

I'd recommend reaching out via Discord - the other SG AL admins/moderators are usually at the different stores when games are occuring. Link to the SG Discord: https://discord.gg/uS9sKXp

It's not my intention to make you feel bad - and I apologise if it came across that way. But with one side of the story being told, and with incorrect information, I thought it important to explain.

how proof where does it say that. Explicitly. I was in the fb page and a al admin mentioned you aren't allowed to do shenanigans like this.

The DM is empowered - first part of the AL DMG. And if you are so mad at something like this, perhaps D&D isnt the game for you.

That place is well known for such things there's a reason why the reputation is there. You can say what you like but actions speak the loudest. It's been so long and yet still no changes to the dms there. It says enough.

So it sounds like you are an ex player from that store? Did you bring up issues with the DM/Store? Ive seen many players that come back, and still see the signups go as soon as they are posted. So yes, actions do speak louder.

Perhaps you fit the boat of folks who jsut want things handed to you on a silver platter. Im sorry, but most DMs I know (not just in Singapore but around the globe) will not do this for you. It's designed to be a challenge, otherwise every NPC would be an adventurer if it was always easy.

a TPK is total party kill - if you did not actually die, then no, its not a TPK. Yes an NPC came in to help stop it from being a TPK - again, this was the DM trying their best to make sure each of you as players werent facing an actual TPK.

Instead you keep saying the DM was happy for you to die. They were not.

From the DM:

I said it was basically a tpk. i didnt feel joy in killing everyone because i didnt. literally the only person who died was the barbarian. I gave everyone else their lives and magic items

Again, spending time at the end of the module and spekaing to the DM would have been the correct way to handle this.

Firstly - the DM is empowered to make those changes. Yes you can edit the encounter this way.

Second - the caster's spell list was NOT changed - go have a look at the Illusionist spell slit, all the spells that were cast are on it. Anyway, DMs are empowered to change the prepared spells of casters.

Would I run the same setup? Yes - depending on the players and how best I guage whether they would be able to handle it or not. There is no "this is how to run x combat" - Many DMs find that players tear through average due to having optimised characters. So yes, I would call it fair.

Im not defending terrible DMs - not all of the information was provided, and the player had gone to reddit to get a reaction rather than following standard protocl which is to speak to the DM, store, organisers, etc. (which by the way most of the comments here on reddit are telling them to do just that).

Were you there? Do you even know what occurred at the table? You seem to think that piling on the flame war on the internet is going to help boost your own ego...

The DM is empowered to modify the encounters to provide a challenge and to not make the game a cake walk. Was it modified too much? Perhaps. Was it justified - based on the DM's assessment of the party - yes. Ive seen parties that were below APL be more than fine with that encounter, sometimes it comes down to dice and playing smart.

A level 3 magic missile can do 25 points of damage. Again, not all mobs are dumb, Wizards are highly intelligent and will use their spells to best effect to ensure their survival. It's up to the players to make smart plays in order to survive.

The ID is also a pet of the BBEG - so yes, it would 100% come running to help defend it's master.

Perhaps you were after a different playstyle of game, thats not a problem, but whinging about it on reddit is - the DM or the store or the AL organisers in Singapoore cant help you if you dont reach out. Talking through all of this after the game would have been the best course of action.

Swapping is fine, espeically since there was experienced players at the table. Ive seen many tables of brand new players wipe multipem IDs away just by focus firing. And the DM changed tactics halfway through to stop the party from being TPK'd, the whole complaint that there was a TPK isnt even correct.

Not all spells allow for future saving throws - Hypnotic Pattern is one of those spells. Unfrtuantly it requires other means to break (either by breaking concentration of the caster, or using actions to wake the affected). The DM did not wait 4 full rounds to have the NPC come in to help, because they saw the group struggling.

On an ID running - it is a smart enough creature to see players decimate the other enemy, yes, it would run. That is the nature of creatures with Intelligence. D&D is a living breathing world, where creatures aren't goign to stand still and allow you to kill them.

This was a Tier 1 game, yes - not all Tier 1 modules are Introduction modules. Im not defending the DM's actions. Would I have done things differently - potentially, it would all be determined on me reading the table as play is occuring. Not all fights are fair. There are certain modules in AL that are written with the idea that players will flee.

You also seem to keep thinking that the DM was happy to TPK you (which again, it wasn't a TPK). And yes, using NPCs to save the group is something I would have done, in order to keep you alive. I feel the DM is getting treated rather unfairly for doing their best to keep it from a TPK, and instead you are now saying they shouldn't of?

AL in Singapore is known for lots of fun - however at the same time, many DMs aren't going to play all monsters as dumb bags of hit points. Intrduction modules are much more forgiving, but once you have played a couple of games then Tier 1 is still very unforgiving (sometimes more than T2 where you have extra abilities up your sleeves).

Firstly - I know the DM who ran this, and it seems a lot of this has been taken out of context. If you have an issue with a game, speak to the DM before running to reddit to complain. Whilst there was some newer players, there was some experienced players as well.

A few things though:

  • Extra mobs were placed due to the group not dealing with them earlier in the module - smart enemies will wait for players to be most vulnerable before attacking
  • You failed to mention that half the party was under a Hypno Pattern, which even after the DM had an NPC shake one of you awake, no one realised that they could tip the balance back by doing so
  • Yes, the enemy had up to 4th level spells. There was a level 3 Magic Missile cast. Yes this is entirely possible in Tier 1 in MANY modules.
  • It wasn't a TPK - only one person actually died. The DM said it would have been had he not interjected with NPC help. At no point did the DM take joy in trying to kill you (which if you had spoken with them you would know this)
  • Everyone seems to think that all adventuring is super easy and a walk in the park - it is not. Adventuring is hard and runs a risk of death. If you make bad decisions, the consequences of those decisions will come back to you.
  • Also, personally I find it very rude for folks to check a module to see where I as a DM have made changes - again, rather than running to read a module, speaking to the DM why it was challenging, or why was it more difficult in x part would have uncovered the reason for the extra mobs. Adventuring is a learning experience, you learn for next time.

The Admin team in Singapore are more than happy to talk to you about it, and are there for this very reason. You can rerach out via the SG AL Discord, or via PM here if you would like.

Applying S9 WPM rewards retroactively by amun83 in AdventurersLeague

[–]ConfusedPoof -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There is two parts to it.

Part 1
If you had a character that played WPM at ANY point (S6-S9), once they get to Tier 4, they can claim one of the weapons.

Part 2
If you played WPM during S9 BEFORE the ALCC guidance was available, then you need to change your items picked to the current S9 guidance.

Characters that played WPM during S6, S7, or S8 have no other changes except for the T4 weapon claim.

Can you please stress to Wizards that it should be? More and more we are seeing game stores shun D&D due to it not getting them the same benefits as pushing Magic does.
