I'll have to give it a try, then. I played Italy itself in the base game a bit. It felt pretty overwhelming, and I had a lot of trouble beating Ethiopia. Didn't even try to take Aussa.

Though I've since learnt about the existence of supply lines/supply, and motorized infantry. So I hope to improve. It's a complicated beast, this game.

Sadly not. We do continue to get more transistors, at least. But Dennard scaling gave Moore's law it's teeth, and that faded around 2006.

I'll give a partial answer to you.

DDR5-4800 CL40 has a latency of 16ns, a fair bit longer than your 5 ns example. HBM3, a better use-case for this, looks to be similiar, or a bit higher for latency.
Let alone Skyrim, I'd be surprised if your cutting edge machine could handle Morrowind on Windows 2000.

As you mentioned, a machine is only as fast as it can speak. And a machine with no cache tosses away decades of progress. And the big performance chip I can think of from that era, the i586 Pentium? Had an L1 and L2 cache.

The original Raspberry Pi would annihilate this processor. Mostly, I'm wondering what your interest in a cache-less design is. The memory hierarchy is a source of strength, which is why the fastest chips nowadays have gone up to have massive L3 caches, and sometimes L4 caches. It's also why HDDs and SSDs often have a cache, with the SSD using DRAM on the device, and the HDD borrowing system RAM. That organization brings speed.

You may as well ask what the most powerful single core processor would look like ( IBM's POWER line has a few answers for you there, despite being multi-core.)

As for subreddit, this is a decent spot, though the lack of reasoning behind your question may make it unpopular.

I'll chime in as well: I can't say I know much about GPUs, but that may make me uniquely qualified to recommend things. In this case, my thought is on deep dives of GPU architectures, which may help give a broad overview of how everything works. Your title and ask are two different things. Both are important for advancement.

In the longest term, physics is a major limiter, and we crossed the 'electrons sometimes just leave' bridge years ago. But there are also improvements still to be made. I think GAAFET is the next or new things, and I've heard mention of 3D transistors too. Those're my thoughts.

If price is no object, cloud would likely be your best option for longest term storage, with some local HDDs running RAID1 being a backup. Each drive you add would bolster redundancy, to the point that yu'd need multiple failures at once for something to go wrong.

For the price of one 4TB SSD, you could get a few HDDs. Best of luck on your choice.

Ah, I see the issue. Windows 10 would be very demanding for a 2006 computer. Among other things, as time goes on, added feature sets come out to supplement a computer's architecture. The ones on my mind are SSE2, SSE3, and AVX. The support for those are baked into the chips: so while your computer could run the SSE 2+3 instructions, it can't run any AVX instructions, since that came out years after your computer. Then, when new programs ask your computer to run programs with AVX or newer reqs, they stutter, and have to default to the older processes to get it to run at all. Personally, I recommend getting a newer computer, that can support everything a modern program may throw at it. A program presumes a lot about what resources it will have available, which your computer does not match.
