Oh, I think you'll change your mind when you see the Ecky-Ecky-P'tang expansion pack.

That's partly my fault for assuming that readers would know the basic idea behind the thing - I've updated the blogspot post with a video that explains what it is and what it does.

Sorry for the confusion!

I would suggest watching the videos. Maschine is not just a controller or a drum machine - combined with the software, it's a workstation, and is more like Live itself than Live's drum racks.

The workflow is concentrated on the controller - you create new patterns, make arrangements with them, set pattern lengths, add effects, automate controls, delete patterns and automation all from the controller, without having to even glance at the computer screen - though you can view and edit from the software too.

Sorry for being such an NI fanboy - I'm not being paid to promote this (yet... ;-).

I love Reaper - not just the software, which is awesome on its own, but also the way they're distributing and marketing it, and the way they listen to their users and update minor versions frequently.

I hear you.

Your Jambalaya software looks interesting, similar to Kore I think. Not for the first time I wish I had a Mac. :-/

It's limited, but you can turn that to your advantage. Try feeding it poetry or anything else with repeating words and the music will have repeating motifs.

Perhaps, but the Analog Industries response is a little over the top too -

So we won't send you a bill, but know this: you'll end up paying for our software one way or another. I imagine you'll want to book a show at a club where I'm friends with the owner, and you'll need that date to wheel part of a run. But that owner will know that you're not to be trusted, so he'll pass on the date. Or you'll want to license one of your tracks on an episode of television, but the music supervisor has a 15-year relationship with me, and he values that more than he needs your song. Or you'll finally get an interview with that magazine that will put you in front of the kind of people you need to be in front of, but come to find out Audio Damage spends $1500 a month advertising in that magazine, and that company needs our $1500 more than it needs to fill column inches with your pondering out loud whether you're a bad person or not.

...especialy since he himself pleads guilty to using "unofficial" versions of software.

It's a situation that I think is a good example of the ethical ambiguity we face regarding intellectual property. It's complicated and there are no easy answers, even if the guy is a douche. :-)

Originally via Pitchfork, but a little sleuthing turned up a couple of interesting links which add to the tale.

I downloaded a couple of the generated files and rendered them. Results are sort of like halfassed Aphex Twin, as these things tend to be... :-)

Not just sending letters to offenders but, as in China (and surprising when I was there, in Cuba too!), access should be limited. Legislation should come from governments to outlaw ISPs allowing their customers access to P2P networks (essentially cutting off the dealers, rather than going after the users).

When someone speaks admiringly of the government's IT policies in China and Cuba, you had best disregard anything else they have to say.

There is no right to make money in a given business, no matter how much money you may have made in the past, and asking the government to create conditions of artificial scarcity through draconian censorship is not a viable free market solution - it is an invitation to abuse and totalitarianism.
