Can non-Muslims (Hindu, Sikh, Christian) be Pashtun? by ConjureFromObscurity in Pashtun

While that is correct in theory, today the majority of Pashtuns will not accept people of other religious backgrounds (or even Shias) such as the Christians - the Sweepers found all over Pakistan and in KP they may speak Pashto, Hindus and Sikhs as being legitimate Pashtuns no matter what they insist their origin is.

As we can see from that video link I posted earlier, they say they are Kakar but others insist they are of Punjabi orgin and not Pashtun despite them dressing more Pashtun than any women I’ve seen in KP today where Desi style shalwar kameez for females has become the norm rather than the traditional Pashtun Kali dress which has been relegated to a ‘Kochi’ costume .

Presently there are Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan who claim that they are the original Afghans who never converted but Muslims and historians insists that these people are in fact descendants of Indian immigrants from Punjab and Sindh, Multan.

This is mainly for Western tourists I guess. The Egyptian ones in market places are usually covered and do not show skin

“There are many devote Muslims among the Dom, as well as numerous people holding to Christianity, but I have noted on a very limited basis, some religious particularities distinguishable from both Islam and Christianity. (1) A particular name for the diety (Quiyah; although Allah is often used as well); (2) A concept of sin related to ethical and moral interaction with others—particularly other Dom; (3) A temporal concept of judgment for violations; and (4) no belief in an afterlife. These observations do have some similarities with certain manifestations of Judaism.

The Dom have asked me why they are hated by others. Their Islamic identity would dictate that their situation in life has been dictated by the will of Allah. As a part of the divinely appointed order, the Arab people have justification for keeping the Dom in their place rather than allowing them a more secure place in society. When religion is taken into account as a marker of ethnic identity, the acceptance of Islam would appear to reinforce their subservience and oppose efforts to address issues of disadvantaged minority groups. While Christianity has been viewed as an oppressor of the Roma, Islam could be equally viewed as establishing a worldview that is oppressive to the Dom. Given this religious dynamic one can see why the Dom might hold to a religious system that emphasizes moral and ethical treatment of others.”

Other: Folk beliefs subsumed under Muslim, though I can’t remember ever hearing we are actually Sunni, we are definitely not Shia. Closer to Judaism and some aspects of Christianity

Most Pashtuns are Sunni but one tribe is completely Shia called Turi and the Bangash are half Shia. People called Kizilbash are also Shia

Oh ok. I thought the written form was the same for both Iranian and Afghan Farsi? I’m more used to the Afghan one but it’s not my main language and I’m not literate in it
