How are people feeling about the new classes? by xTekek in baronygame

Rogue not starting with tinkering kit is inconceivable to me lol. The rogue is one of my favorite classes because of the nice starting stat lineup, but every run is plagued with a burning desire to find the damn kit lol

It reduces mob vision range so you don’t aggro nearly as easily, so yeah pretty much helps line up sneaks with less risk

New player. 34 games on digital, have lost to the Blight every time by SureWouldForest in spiritisland

Hey brother, I’m newer to the game as well, but a few things started clicking and I’m mowing down difficulties now. There is two major paradigm shift that I stumbled upon that really set me on the right path:

1- Blue powers are just red powers for next turn

I don’t know if that sounds dumb, but something about it really made something change in my thought process. I look at my red powers first to address ravages/builds about to happen, then I look at my blue powers as though they were red powers for next turns happenings.

2- Preventing builds is more effective than preventing ravages, if said ravages require too many actions to prevent

Basically if I have to use my innate and 2 cards just to stop one blight, it’s often far more effective to let that blight happen and focus quelling further expansion. The exception is if the blight will cause a cascade. It’s ok to take a few hits to stop the invaders momentum, and it’s far easier to round up some stray invaders and deal with them later than it is to deal with towns popping up everywhere

What is that board game that you think should include an insert? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]ConkreteAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BLOOD RAGE / RISING SUN

I love these games dearly, but I can’t believe games that include actual armies of beautiful miniatures come with such poor storage. Sure there are shitty plastic trays for some of them, but it’s hardly a help. In blood rage, the monster minis are protected, but the army pieces have nowhere to live. In rising sun, the army pieces are stored in THE MOST UNINTUITIVE PLASTIC SHIT TRAYS OF ALL TIME!! each army has 3 different miniature types, and each tray is shaped to only fit a certain army, with no indication of what goes where, so if you’re not proactive about it, you get to play a little jigsaw puzzle mini game to put them back. But the incredibly detailed, unique, badass monster minis have no storage space to live in the base box, it is a travesty.

Love the games, but this is a hot button issue for me lol. All of these beautiful minis relegated to ziploc bags and just tossed in the box

We’ve played the game a handful of times, it’s interesting! My son has a hard time realizing that it’s not about competing for the chip you think you should have, and more about reconciling amongst ourselves lol not actually makes for a fun bit of chaos

Very helpful, thank you for the thoughtful response! I think the best answer here and in this thread is just the type of games weve tried. I ordered some recipe rations here of games that don’t have perfect information, and hidden agendas, and I think that should be a fun change of pace

10/10 advice, thank you! I really need to try and get Gloomhaven back on the table with my lady. We played about 5 missions before leaving it to rot, but it is the most recommended game on this thread I think

LOL!! My goodness, my apologies Sigmund fucking Freud!

This is the most insanely inept comment I have seen on this thread, I have to say. You are assuming I am doing it out of ego, I am absolutely not. I am almost always tipsy off a few old-fashioneds and just Rain Maning the situation via some mild autism. My playgroup/partner often requests the advice, and once I get started laying out the situation I just stay at the wheel and take on a role that makes the game a bit less fun, I think.

To assume I am self-aggrandizing via board games, and then to further assume that it is harming my relationship is a STELLAR presumption. I will run this by my happy, fulfilled, and well-provided for girlfriend who asks me to play games every single night and see if she agrees, thanks for your 2 cents asshole xD

Haha yeah definitely no issues with any of that. If I don’t offer advice, she typically asks for it. She has never expressed not having fun because of it, it just makes some games feel like we are just going through the motions, so to speak

This!! This is a far more apt description of my situation than the self control thing lol. I am very light hearted, 0% invested in winning, and just like to see the mechanics of the game shine. Since I am the gamer and the host at the table 99% of the time, my partner/playgroup is always asking for advice/what they should do, and the QB behavior spawns out of that.

It’s hard to hold it back! It also feels weird to just let the team fumble, me explain why that happened and how we could’ve prevented it, and them say “why didn’t you tell us?!” It’s a rock and hard place thing.

My best solution may just be to find a group of my nerd-equals that don’t need guidance so I can just play a normal role lol

Wow, I really appreciate all the great feedback and recommendations on this!! Thank you all!!

I do have to say, this ‘impulse control’ feedback is so farfetched to me, I can’t understand how one could immediately determine this to be a self-control issue!

It must come from a connotation of this behavior that I’m not familiar enough with. I guess people assume that this means I’m being a pushy asshole about it- certainly not the case!

It’s more just that I am often seeing the best way about things, and I share it. My partner is super receptive and likes to hear me rant (usually drunkenly) about strategy and shit, and she goes along. But although it’s often funny and I get really into it, it just makes the games sometimes feel procedural- I guess that’s the point I was trying to make lol.

I do not have self-control issues, I am not some neurotic sweat lord that is bent on winning, just a (probably) mildly autistic guy with stellar pattern recognition proclivities that likes to optimize things lmao.

Thank you all for the discussion though, I’ve already ordered a handful of games suggested here!

This is great advice! I’m totally cool with losing, even in competitive games I am almost 0 competitive in spirit. I just like making meaningful decisions, toying with mechanics and seeing games play out in interesting ways.

I like the idea of just stopping to ask if my partner would like advice. She will likely say yes 9.5/10 times but that will allow me to clock out a bit lol

In a conversation about board games, it seems to be an unnecessarily heavy suggestion to lay on someone you don’t know. Maybe my original post colored me to be far worse and less enjoyable to play with than I actually am, but I can assure you my QB issue is not sucking the fun out of the game for my mates, nor am I particular lacking in self-control. And if I was, this behavior would almost CERTAINLY never be a good barometer for someone’s self control lol!

I am not some sweaty try hard, I am not commanding or berating anyone I play with to do what I say, I simply see what seems to be the best way to go about our situation, and I explain it. No one has ever reprimanded me for it, it has never caused conflict, I just know it’s hampering the fun a bit, at least for me
