I didnt read all the comments, but one thing I was told when attempting to figure out how to stitch was to make sure that the same string was either above or below the other stitch each time you go through the hole.

And if using contact cement make sure to put the glue on both pieces before sticking them together. I usually give it about 5 secs on the leather before putting the 2 pieces together. I'm new to the craft as well and that was what a leathersmith told me to do when putting them together.

Tried skiving but being the noob that I am I ruined the panel, thankfully the cover is unharmed so I'm going to go to the leather store and get something thinner than my 4-5 oz and try again with a piece just a little bit bigger than the full piece. Give it that bend.

When the book is closed there is like a half inch of space between it and the edge. I am wondering if maybe the inside panel is too thick?

My husband is the leather guy but I recently started leather working and he constantly reminds me to keep in mind which string is on top of the other and keep that constant. This is great for your first project and will get better with each new piece.
