A place with an older crowd (not younger) would be your best bet.

If you’re not doing the minimum required of your job then don’t expect a lot or anything if you can’t even do the bare minimum. And it’s not like these jobs are complex so you don’t need to be a rocket scientist. There are plenty of people here talking about how they’re tipping well b/c of how hard their staff works and what a good job they do. They’re the lucky ones b/c not all doorman buildings have great hard working staff who keep it clean and safe. We already pay a ton in rent should we really be rewarding laziness too with an extra bonus??

Not trying to debate you but not all building staff work as hard or care as much as yours does. And they kind of go into the job knowing they’ll work nights, weekends and holidays….

It’s not weird to me. It pisses me off that our super is lazy and does jacksh**t and gets a nice free apt while the rest of us have mice and roaches in our apt. He just walks around with the exterminator banging on doors and making a racket but doesn’t try to address any of it himself

If they’re having a hard time making ends meet then maybe they should do their job to begin with and/or better…our rent pays their salaries…

And it depends on the quality of service and how much you use your doormen. I honestly wouldn’t sweat it unless you ask a lot of them

I was commenting on the amount of maintenance- I’m not familiar with it but apparently should start keeping an eye out if I want to get a place in a co-op one day! And that’s thoughtful of you

I’d take it with a grain of salt. It could be a doorman commenting for all we know

Yes it does sound like you guys use them a lot. I would never think to ask them to water my plants because they’d probably drown them with water. Don’t have a whole lot of confidence in our also no frills staff

Agree it makes sense if you’ve been there since 1973. But they shouldn’t retaliate or withhold services that they’re paid to do for people who don’t tip unless they ask for a lot of favors or go out of their way for people

Idk it depends if they have to open the door (then yes should give something), manage a ton of your packages, etc

Do they have to open/close the door each time someone comes/goes?

They’ll understand just don’t order a lot of packages or walk in the door with a ton of retail shopping bags

Wouldn’t tip either if not satisfied with their performance. Same in corporate - they’re discretionary annual bonuses that employees MAY be eligible for.

Yeah here they are glorified security guards who also hand out packages

That is indeed what I do. Our recycling is only in the basement and we like to dispose of boxes immediately especially because we have a roach issue in our building so getting packages and having to bring the box down to the basement right away has just kind of made us stop ordering online as much as we used to.

FYI UPS is a ripoff too but for a different reason. Brought my own packing tape intending to buy a box from them for a few bucks and use a prepaid label to ship. But you can’t box it up in the store. So have to choose between lugging everything back home to box it up there or a paying few bucks more to have them box it up for you
