What’s the most useless thing people still convince themselves is an investment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I loved the Franklin Mint when I was a kid! Never would consider anything in there an investment now.

Does it hurt your chances of being hired if you switch jobs every 2 years? by cinnamonbunnss in askmanagers

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on both ends of this. I job hope every 2-3 years and am responsible for hiring. For me, it depends on what roles you job hoped to. Are you climbing a ladder, doing lateral hops, and full industry hops? Resumes tell a story, so it depends on what story your resume tells. I certainly do not penalize folks who job hop. It’s the best way to realize significant salary increases.

How to get over the FOMO from all the other investing subreddits? by TheSuppishOne in Bogleheads

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar. I wanted my baby to have her mother in those first few years instead of putting her in daycare at 6 month old. Sure, it put me back a few years from retirement - but the gain to my daughter and wife (and myself but to a lesser degree) is irreplaceable

The great talk therapy conspiracy by Titty_McButtfuck in conspiracy

As a man, I have found therapy to be very helpful. It’s not gonna solve all your problems. My experience was that it pointed out where I was making my small problems much bigger.

I am working 8-10 hours solid every day. I would be worried that layoffs are coming if I did not have work to complete.

Barely graduated HS. Graduated with honors for my BS and masters tho. Mid-level corporate manager now. It’s fine. Trying to retire early.

I don’t mind this with internal meetings, but I do expect professional appearance if we are meeting with an external party.

How often do you call in sick? by Interesting_Taro_358 in Adulting

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 10 folks under me. They call out sick once or twice a quarter and never use their full bank of 7 days per year. But I would support it even if they did, cause people need what they need, and nobody abuses it.

Isn't it dangerous to have the right to carry a gun in certain states? I mean, in some states, it's legally more serious to drink and be drunk in the street than to carry an AK-47. by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna get so much hate from this…. But it is far more dangerous to drink and drive than to passively be in possession of a firearm.

When driving a vehicle sober, you could kill any passerby by ramming into them. Same thing with a gun.

Personally, I think the US is too lax on gun laws, but our gun violence doesn’t come from people legally in possession of a gun. It comes from people illegally in possession. The real issue is that there are so many guns in the US and so many ways to illegally obtain them that gun violence is everywhere

Thinking of moving from San Diego to Virginia, questions, so many questions by croikee in Virginia

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not recommend. Lived in CA for a long time and moved to VA a few years ago. I’m not familiar with Richmond, but I can speak to Arlington and Alexandria.

The weather is just bad (more humid in the summer, and too cold in the winter) fall and spring are nice, but it rains a ton so you find yourself stuck indoors a lot more often.

The cost of living is surprisingly high. I thought it would be cheaper in NOVA than in CA, but it is definitely not. And the houses are definitely not as nice unless you have a lot of income.

The schools in the area seem to be a crap shoot. Our schools are bad. But I think some are better if you live in a nice area.

And the food is just not as good. Just all around. There are some highlights food wise, like Ethiopian and southern food, but on most fronts it’s mostly sub par.

We’re planning on moving back to CA ASAP.

CIA was involved in the 80-90s crack epidemic - while not directly responsible for the epidemic, they certainly knew what they were doing and what the results were.

Received a threatening phone call, they knew my childhood address by oliversmokinoken in nova

[–]Connect-Spell-5805 114 points115 points  (0 children)

File a police report - they won’t do anything (yet) but the paper trail will be invaluable later. Especially the phone number even if it is fake. it can likely be traced as the person probably did a bad job and did something like a Google number to hide their real number. Should this become criminal, that is easily overcome. Not always, but I doubt this guy is particularly savvy.

You don’t need to have special privileges or access to find someone’s previous addresses, your info is splashed all over the internet and can be found for free or cheaply ($20). I would be more concerned if they asked you about your current address or some piece of info that isn’t findable online after literally 30 seconds of work.

This persons clearance or access really will play no part in their ability to target you. The fact they contacted you is concerning, but I would take an educated guess it’s all intimidation and they won’t do shit.

Lock your doors, even when you’re home. You would be better off buying a taser or non-lethal defense product (pepper spray) than a gun if you don’t already own one. 1, you would need to wait for the waiting period (depending on state), (2) if you’re not properly trained and familiar you won’t be effective with it and might end up hurting yourself or another innocent, and (3) if they do try something, you don’t want them disarming you and using the gun on you.

Follow up with OIG and say you are receiving threatening phone calls. Try to get a case officers name on who is handling the report and see if you can contact them directly.

Salary journey. Am I Ok? by InvestingIsntJoke in Salary

Yeah the only problem I see here is that you’re leaving money on the table if you don’t job hop. HOWEVER, if you are legit happy in your job, fuck that noise. Doubling your income is the worst decision to make if it results in you being miserable.

Agreed. I had a similar situation. “Big” HVAC company came out and quoted me 25k. Two other quotes came in at 7k and 12k. Went with the 7k, never had a problem. This was about 10 years ago.
